Will this mean we will no longer be able to DL mp3s and share them wildly, or pirate software as before? Will it mean all software will need to be "authorized" by the processor? I'm thinking of all this in reference to the "Palladium" or whatever it's called for Windows.

And please leave out all the nonsense of how it's immoral to pirate copyrighted material, that's not what this is about. Let's leave that to each person to decide.

Thoughts, information?

What makes you think that?

Mac OS X is Mac OS X, regardless of the chip on which it runs. Forcing a feature like that would break lots of software, especially all the stuff that's still going to be running on PowerPC computers for several years to come.

Only for movies and stuff that is going to be DRM..Since MP3s aren't DRM, I don't see how they could block them..If so, they could block ANYTHING you wanted to transfer.

True what you said about mp3. But I just wonder if software will also get a slab of DRM, a la Palladium.... It remains to see.

Again, what makes you suspect this? If Apple wanted system-wide DRM, it could already be done in software. Heck, even Microsoft hasn't implemented Palladium and it was Microsoft that proposed the cursed thing.

I think that DRM might be part of the motivation, though I don't see why they can't build it into a PowerPC motherboard, or OSX. IIRC, they design the boards in-house, right?

Intel put out a press release saying that the Computerworld Today article is wrong and that there is no 'unannounced drm' in those chips, so the basis of that article's thesis is likely wrong.
Quote:
Computerworld Today Australia story incorrectly reported that the Intel Pentium D processor and Intel 945 Express Chipset includes unannounced embedded DRM technology.
That said, I fully expect to see more DRM in the future because people don't care enough to stop it.

true, but what could we do to stop it? the alternative would be to not buy computers but that's not gonna happen. maybe this is what you mean...

It's not the computers that are the problem, it's the content publishers. What you can do depends on what you already do in life. The most basic step is to educate yourself and others since you will inevitably come into contact with people who are connected to the issue professionally. A good, fun and entertaining starting point is with cory doctorow and boing boing.
