I'm not sure what my reaction is to this.

On one hand, I can't believe that there are people/companies in this world with enough spare cash to fund a study on why cats are finicky eaters.

OTOH, who the hell cares?

If you have the money, they must have figured why not. Chances are someone got a Ph.D. out of the study.

If your business is selling cat food, why wouldn't you pay money for research to create better tasting cat food. If cats love your food but every other brand is just ok, you'll sell a lot more.

Point taken. I realized this about ten minutes after I posted. I hadn't thought it through all the way.

Monell doesn't have grad students. It is a bizarre place, they study perception, and I guess they don't limit themselves to humans...

Even if it sounds weird, this study could turn out to be of interest. Say you could in time help people with more than just a sweet tooth. (there are lots of funding available to studies that are even remotely connected to obesity)
Learning and understanding the genetics behind any given physiological function can help develop treatments for ailments caused by dysfunction of that.
