Ive been searching the net, and it seems that if you only order 1 stick of ram then the manufature puts it in the lower slot.
so since I changed my order to 1 stick of 1 gig instead of 2 512's if my powerbook develops the lower slot problem then what will happen...will it just not start? I am hoping and assuming that this is a limited problem and chance are my laptop will be good to go for many years but reading through all the post here is enough to scare anyone. it scared me enough to almost cancel my order, but apple made the upgrade to one stick instead of two less painful so I am still getting it. |

The newer 15" and 17" powerbooks have an alarming propensity for loosing their lower ram slot. Even more disturbing is the people who have had the motherboard replaced by Apple only to experience the same issue just a few months later.
This is a very serious issue that is recall worthy, but again Apple is ignoring it and hoping it will go away (like the ibook MB issue, pb power adapter etc...). The upper ram slot still works even if the lower slot dies. |

Think of it this way: if you do develop the problem, then you can just move the 1gig stick to the upper slot. If you had two 512s, and the problem showed up, you'd be down to only 512megs.

yeah...I kinda am trying to get a grip on how seriously to take problems users have in groups...I mean I'm sure when problems come up that the discussion boards at apple are the first place everyone posts, so lets say that 170 people did have the ram failure, I wonder how representative that is....if it was a major problem would'nt there be thousands of people chiming in....yall have more experience here than I do so correct me if Im wrong.
the post about if I do run into problems I can just switch slots....this was my thinking too and is the reason I called apple and switched my order to 1 stick of 1 gig instead of 2 512's....I am still impressed with apple for acting like they cared about my concerns....the switch only ended up costing me alittle over 50.00....well worth the piece of mind that I gained. |
