Hi All,
I plan on getting a Mac-Mini next week, and will be setting it up so it is the direct connection to the net, and it serves my PC and laptop in the future... I've read in a magazine about the various ways to secure your airport network via a base station, but I wondered if these security options were available simply for the airport card installed, like specifying certain MAC codes, WPA and WEP protection etc... Thanks. |

There are ways to spoof a MAC address for Airport Extreme cards in some versions of the OS...
though I'm struggling to think of a legitimate reason a 'regular user' would need to do this <raises inquisitive eyebrow> General info... How-to spoof MAC on a Mac (more for Darwin kernel folk than point & click kiddies) Airport Extreme Cards (static method) Airport Extreme Cards (dynamic method) Last edited by curiousuburb : 2005-08-04 at 04:39. |

sure you can spoof, but the person trying to spoof would need to know the MAC code to spoof surely??

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to achieve...
I presume you've read the obvious FAQs... http://www.apple.com/support/airport/ Sounds like what you're looking for is "Software Base Station" (using an Airport Extreme card as if its an Airport Extreme Base Station) The challenge may be trying to administer it from the PCs... all i want to know is can i set my macmini up to operate in the same way as an aiport extreme base unit... ie will the airport card in the mini have the same security features as the base unit? From looking at the apple site it looks like they do, but I was looking for confirmation if possible.

sorry... updated previous post...
Software base station has been possible in prior versions of OS X... haven't set one up recently. the big issue may be if you want to administer a Mac Software Base Station from the PC side... (where configuring the WEP and WPA options might be a Pain) might end up being easier to go with a WiFi router that all boxes can administer... YMMV Last edited by curiousuburb : 2005-08-04 at 05:39. |
