Well Im a little pissed. I get all excited about this and I cant even download it from MS's web page.
I guess it was too ground-breaking so they had to pull it already. ![]() |

What I want to know is why they release the announcement before they put it up for download. Why not do what everyone else does and do the press release at the same time as the product becomes available. I've been waiting all afternoon to download the bloody thing.

I'll probably give it a spin, since it's here, but I've grown quite happy with Adium.

No I was being sarcastic. Im in the same boat you are.
Adium does a nice job of replacing MSN but the file transfer thing drives me nuts. |

Not that I can use it, it requires 10.3. |

Unless they start offering MSN Messenger with AV capabilities, I'm not downloading.

I'm actually pretty happy with it, but there's no reason for it to have taken this long. There really is only 1 main new feature, display pictures. I only used Proteus because I wanted my friends to shut up about their stupid display pictures.
But really, we can't complain about them not including video. It's Microsoft, they don't have too much incentive to support the Mac version of MSN Messenger, which they make no money off of. iChat does the job fine, but no one I know uses AOL. The Mac version of Yahoo is just about as far behind the Windows version as MSN, but at least there's low quality video chat. |

if you guys use adium, the new messenger is sooo not worth the download. I don't know why they took sooo long to release this.

I'm gonna have to agree. Adium is really a superior app IMO.

Seems ok. I mostly just switch over to MSNM when I need to exchange a file with someone. Two things about the new one bug me.
Why is their implementation of the "patience" icon so bad? Has Apple got some kind of trademark on the proper one? Why, on a Mac messenger, must it tell me every time I open a window: "To help prevent infection by a computer virus or worm, never accept or open any file or link in an instant message until you verify its authenticity with the sender." I think I'll stick to Adium for now, unless I'm sending files. I am not saying she is engaged in small-scale mining operations for precious metals, but I have never seen her associate with any gentlemen of African American origin who are suffering financial embarrassment. Yea, Adium smashes it 2 peices... theres no reason this relase should have taken to long...and ive been having amazing compadabillity issues with the pc world...like none of my messages getting through issues...ive resorted to MSN Mac 4.1 & adium...its a poor effort from MS, office is good, Messenger is discracefull
(ps. I use iWork alot more than office...so it may not be as flash as i think) > i also realise i cant spell ![]() jm. ジョエル マー |

That's why OS X has a built in spell checker. Go to your edit menu, spelling, "check spelling as you type" Easy as that. Also, could you try and use correct grammar and actually type your words out? Having the number 2 in place of the word to or too is pretty irritating.

Just spotted this update (hey, so sue me, I was on holiday when it was released
) and downloaded it, and I'm quite impressed. Then again, that's mainly because my expectations have been lowered so much (notably due to the last 'major' Messenger update...remember that one, guys? Added a couple of non-animated emoticons and...um, well, that was it? -_-). But Microsoft seem to at least be doing some things right now.Though I'm not entirely convinced that brushed metal is the way to go for Messenger, it seems to work all right, and we've finally got display pictures, which I think are implemented very nicely, and you can pick and choose between the different methods of displaying them, to boot... They've also finally managed to get the animated emoticons to actually ANIMATE... The file transfer's also supposed to be improved in terms of reliability...I know I've had problems in the past where Messenger simply refused to send files to some contacts occasionally (I've actually resorted to Adium for file transfer more than once...a scary thought indeed), and I'm hoping these are alleviated, though I haven't had chance to find out... On the double-edged-sword side of things, they've clearly been slacking-on-purpose when it comes to custom emoticons - receiving but not sending them is just Microsoft having a bit of a laugh at our expense... The same goes for the whole tab thing. I can just see it: "Now," says a certain Microsoft head honcho to an employee, "let's come up with some ideas that EVERYBODY will love." "Ooh! I know! Tabbed conversations!" "Good one. Anything else?" "Um...oh, yeah! Integration with other messaging systems!" "Brilliant! Okay, now that we've thought those up, let's see what we can do to implement them enough to show people we've thought of them, but then make them completely useless..." "Tabs? Cross-IM integrating? Useless? That's crazy. Nobody could do that!" "We'll see about that...okay, we'll only allow the whole integration thing as part of a proprietary 'corporate' account system that nobody will ever use!" "You're pure evil, sir." "Thank you. And the tabs...let's not let people tab conversations! Let's just let them tab between their normal accounts...and the proprietary corporate accounts!" "Can I marry you, Bill?" "Please, call me Satan. And - get this - we'll include the tab bar as a permanent fixture in the already-cramped contact list, even though nobody will ever use it!" "*fapfapfap*" "I know. I love me too. Now, I just hope nobody comes up with any patches to remove the tab bar..." "Like this, sir? http://forum.mess.be/index.php?showtopic=10723 " "Just for that, you don't get to pleasure me tonight." Naturally, practically all the functionality of MSN Messenger for Windows is still missing in action - which in most cases is probably a good thing, since it helps the Mac version to consistently feel less bloated than the Windows version. Some features, though, such as AV chat, sending custom emoticons, and those little MSN Space update indicators, would still be appreciated. Well, there's always MS Messenger:mac 6 to look forward to... -_- |

Only implementing audio chat (no video) seems distinctly like a possibility, though. I'd also hope it finally includes the ability to SEND custom emoticons as well as recieve them (though I'd be completely unsurprised by a tactic of just including a few extra emoticons that send based on the custom emoticon framework, and touting it as an 'expanded range of emoticons'...) If they implement Nudges without implementing EVERY SINGLE OTHER FEATURE of Windows' version first, I will personally shoot them all with a rifle. |
