--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hi my powerbook is playing up.
started about a week ago - kept getting grey restart screen. got files I need off it using target mode. gave it to a guy to have a look at and decided was beat to wipe all and reinstall 10.2. he wiped it but now it wont boot from disc. any ideas? (can run hardware test and says all is ok)

IIRC, the original 12" and 17" Powerbooks came with special versions of 10.2.7 on them. So, a clean install of 10.2 probably wouldn't work. If possible, I'd try the hardware restore CD's that came with the Powerbook, or a 10.3 or 10.4 disc, if you have one lying around.

What BlueRabbit says is generally correct. The minimum supported system version for the first 17" PowerBook is 10.2.8. A clean install from the original 10.2 discs will not work unless it you also install the software update for 10.2.8 or higher.

The same goes for any system. Brand new computers won't run earlier versions of 10.4, my year-old PowerBook won't run the original 10.3, and so forth.

You should either use the original CDs/DVD that came with the PowerBook to restore the system or (even better) find a copy of 10.3 or 10.4 to install on it.
