When I used Linux, there was a CLI program called hdparm that could change hard drive settings how ever you liked to get the best performance out of the drive. It's an linux-only program, IIRC, but i was wondering if there's something like this for the *BSDs and OS X.

Looking at that article, it seems to me that the only reason hdparm exists is because Linux has to be extremely conservative by default since it can run on practically anything under the sun. Since Apple makes the whole package, I would expect that settings like those listed there would be set based on autodetected hardware or at least set to a more optimal defaults.

That said, I just browsed through the man pages of some /usr/bin and /usr/sbin programs and saw nothing directly analogous to hdparm. Honestly, I think this is a good thing.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'd still like to at least test my HD read/write speeds, to see if Apple does optimize drive performance.
