i have a 3g ipod and im thinkin about getting a black nano, but my concern is that my itunes library is around 15-16 gigs and thats obviously bigger then 2 or 4 gigs. my question is, is it possible to sync 2 ipods from the same itunes? like perhaps pick which cds i want on there or songs and such?

Yes, but you'll need to turn auto update off.

Luca has a great method of syncing a large iTunes library to a smaller iPod, but I don't really recall what it is right now. Private message him or maybe he'll poke his head in here and enlighten all of us.

The way I do it is to create a smaller playlist called "iPod" or something and have that be auto synced to my iPod. It's really simple. Almost as easy as having an iPod completely autosync. I've also messed around with creating a few smart playlists that get updated automatically based on various criteria and have those sync to my iPod. Like, if I import some radiohead, I know for a fact it's going to go on my iPod. In the iPod prefs, I have it set to auto sync those too.

And you don't need to turn autosync off for both iPods. Just the one that's not big enough to hold your whole library (it'll actually do that automatically). This way, the bigger one will get autosynced with your whole library and the smaller one will get autosynced with only a select playlist or two (or 3 or 4).

If it's not red and showing substantial musculature, you're wearing it wrong.

With my mini, and now nano, I specify which playlists get synced. I also create a new playlist specific to the iPod where I put all of the other music I want to listen to. This could be a smart playlist with a set size which gets autofilled, for example.

There's also Autofill: either from your total library of from the playlists you choose.

I don't think there is autofill on the nano. I haven't been able to find it, anyway...

Yep. You're right. I must have been thinking about my shuffle.

Is auto-fill something that would be implemented via software, as in a future iPod software update? Or is there something hardware-specific that would need to be present for that to happen? What's the story on that?

Because that seems to be everyone's desire for the nano...a shuffle-like auto-fill capability (I know I'd dig it, and it would pretty much be the clincher for me in selling my 3G 15GB iPod and getting a snazzy new nano).

On a geeky side-note, I took Apple's nano PR shot and, in Photoshop, scaled it to the 3.5" x 1.6" dimensions, printed it, cut it out, etc. and have been in complete awe for two days at the size of it! It's ridiculously cute. Not "beagle puppy" cute, but pretty darn close.

I think the only way you can truly appreciate the marvel of the nano is to hold one in your hand. It's the thickness of 2 sticks of gum. The screen is brilliant. It's un-freakin'-believable.
