I am looking to get a new cell phone soon, and I would like for it to be able to sync with my Mac. I went to the iSync devices page (apple.com/isync/devices.html) but I can't seem to fins any carriers that offer those phones. What's up with that? Even though the page says that over 90 percent of US wireless subscribers can now get an iSync compatible phone, when I click the AT&T Wireless link (for example) none of the phones they list are on it iSync list.

So is that list outdated, or do I have to get my iSync compatible phone elsewhere?

could be outdated... I know AT&T offers several models that use Bluetooth, and iSync sees my Motorola T721 as a T720 when it's hooked up via USB, and syncs fine.

But only 2 of those phones are on the iSync list. Or will any bluetooth phone sync?

As it stands right now the only phones that will sync via bluetooth are Sony Ericsson phones and Nokia Series 60 phones. I should point out that there are a few Siemens phones that will work, but they are just rebranded SE or Nokia phones. The Moto VXXX line will not sync either by BT or USB. AT&TW offers 4 phones that will work with iSync.

iSync is garbage that Apple hasn't bothered to update in 5 months. When Apple said there were implementing SyncML they lied. There are dozens of BT phones that support SyncML, but iSync can't do shit with them.

Now if we were all running Windows all of our phones would be able to sync either by USB or BT (where available).

Yup. It's pretty pathetic how Apple's support for iSync (in terms of mobile phone sync) has gone down the tubes. I remember when Think Secret was predicting that we would get over-the-air (OTA) sync within months. That was over a year ago.

At least synching my bookmarks is useful.

I've been waiting for a true sub-PowerBook for more than 10 years. The 11-inch MacBook Air finally delivers on all counts! It beats the hell out of both my PowerBook 2400c and my 12-inch PowerBook G4 -- no contest whatsoever.

Bitpim works with a few phones that iSync doesn't. I use it with my Sanyo 5300 over USB.

The list is very outdated. It hasn't been updated in probably over a year.

Everyone wondered why Apple seemed to be ignoring iSync, and at WWDC, we found out that it's because syncing services are being redesigned as a developer framework, essentially opening up iSync to anything that wants to sync. So I'm not sure who would make drivers for these phones, assumably the expectation is that phone makers or carriers would do this. Anyway, whoever is interested will be able to with Tiger.

So to make a short story long, check around the net (phonescoop, howardchui, maybe arstechnica, etc.) to see who and what works with iSync at this point.

That's both great to hear and terrible news.

It's great because it's going to open up iSync so lots of devices can be supported. It's terrible news because it goes to show that Apple bit off more than they could chew with iSync. The whole point was that iSync was going to be a SyncML client and any phone that would support it would work. Well, that's frankly a flat out lie.

Does anyone actually think that mobile phone vendors are going to make plugins for iSync? But how many think that we're going to have to shell out $$ to get similar functionality from third parties that comes free if you're using a Windows box.

As for supported phones, like I said above, the only phones that will work are Sony Ericsson phones and Nokia Series 60 phones. Series 40 phones won't work. The Moto T72X will work via USB, but the T730 will not work. Although at this point it's becoming harder and harder to find a T72X.

EDIT: The list is current for the most recent version of iSync. It was last updated in February 2004. The update included support for 'hundreds' of Japanese phones assuming you have the right cable.

Does anyone have a Motorola V600, Motoroloa V400, or Sony Ericsson T637? If so, how are they? Do they sync with iSync?

Thanks!

The SE T637 will work with iSync. The T637 is a T616 with an updated screen so it is legible in sunlight.

Neither of the Moto phones will sync with iSync. However, they are great phones over all. Only issue I know of is that the V600 tends to have some cosmetic cracking of the case.

I have a V500 and I use OnSync to sync my address book. I figure it's worth $10 to use my phone until Apple decides to update iSync.
