ok i ordered a dual processor 2.3 ghz machine, and now with the update apple is asking me to choose between a dual processor 2.7 or the new single processor dual core 2.3. I plan on using it for FCP video editing. Any help would rule, thanks

I read somewhere that the new dual core cpu's are as much as 55% more efficent than the current dual cpu rigs. Consider however though that the Dual CPU rigs are shipping now and the Dual Core rigs won't ship for another 1 - 3 weeks.

I went ahead and got a dual core 2.3. The machine it is replacing is a single processor G4 450 so anything is an improvement. I wonder however if the Dual Processor 2.7 Ghz might have been a better choice. If anyone else has any opions I'd love to hear them as i'm sure i can still change.

Between the two I'd of gone with the dual core 2.3 as well. I've secretly never trusted those water-cooled machines.

I am having this same problem.

So what is better (canadian dollars)

a) a dual 2.5 watercooled PM (brand new) for $1900

b) a dual 2.7 watercooled PM (brand new) for $2999

c) a DualCore 2.3 for $2999

I am leaning to the 2.3 but I am not sure....

I would get the dual core. Unless you can get an incredible deal on your other options. The way I see it anything you buy aside from hard drives (wich was the only thing not upgraded to sata II) for the dual core can be used down the line when you get the quad 4gHz in a year or two. I think the new specs will be carried in to the Macintels, and if you end up getting an insane amount of Ram or the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 you will be able to transfer your goodies. Unless you get a great deal on the other ones wich will let you buy say goodies right now. And have a system wich until a couple days ago was top of the line.

Since when does a "compulsive" person agonize over decisions like these? :D

the real question is on the expansion cards. if you have invested in some good cards for PCI/PCI-X, then you want hte dual proc. 2.7. If you dont have much money in cards, then get the dual core 2.3, as that has PCI-e

For "not so intensive use", would the new 'entry level' dual core 2.0 be just fine w/out stepping up to the 2.3? I'm just asking in terms of processing speed only and not needing to take into account the extra hd space, etc.

I'd rather use the cost diff (500.00) to go up to at least 1GB on memory and get a bt/airport module and perhaps some software.

Anyone have any thoughts to share on the dual core 2.0 vs 2.3?
