in this thread (http://forums.applenova.com/showthread.php?t=10578&page=3) i'm musing over the top of the range mac mini.

much against everyone's advice i'm going to take the plunge and switch! :) i would however really like the 1.5ghz model with the better graphics hardware and faster dvd-r.

the only question now is: do you think apple will ever make this announcement official? or will i be forever waiting?

Most people (from what I've read) don't believe they'll make a big announcement, but rather just quietly update the online-viewable specs. I actually think they'll never even do that. I think they'll wait until January to mention any changes (and introduce the Intel-based Mac mini at that time).

Best bet would be to try the "let me see the box" route, and write down the serial number. You can then look up the machine and see if it's an updated one. Otherwise I guess you just wait.

I don't really see why the Applestore employee cares. Let's be honest, only those who have done a lot of research will know that they should check the serial number of the box, so if letting you have a newer model guarantees them a sale out of you, then everyone is happy, right? Given a choice between letting you look at the serial or not making the sale at all, which is best? It's not like every single person is clamoring for the higher-spec model....

Where would one check the serial number to see if it's updated or not?

In the lower right hand corner there's a place for the serial number:
