If I go down to the apple store this week and hand pick out a G5 Quad, 2 x HD monitors and Final Cut Studio Pro...
do you think they would throw in some/any extra's too? If so, what would be fair to ask for?

Although I fear that they wouldn't because they're just as greedy as M$. Maybe they think it's enough that I get to buy one of their high end products.
Has anyone experienced any kindness in the way of complimentary extras at an Apple Store when making a big purchase? If someone does know of a way. What are the magic words?!

Repeat after me: Open your wallet and say "Help yourself". ;)

Apple is pretty stingy about giving away free stuff, unless it's to schools.

Of course, it wouldn't hurt to ask; I hardly would think the Apple employee would express any annoyance considering how much money you just dropped in that particular Apple store.

You may get an Apple mouse mat! ;)

To be serious for a second... Have you considered going to a specialist independant retailer? We have to in the UK and Thailand, and when I drop that kind of cash I always get free stuff.. But not by going to Apple directly I am afraid.

You might want to ask for the manager. I doubt some part time worker there will say yes, just because he doesn't give a flying rat's ass.

Yeah - that's what I might do.
Also, if I go to an independent specialist - would I still get my student discount:?

I don't believe so. As far as I know, the only places you can get student discounts are Apple Stores and campus bookstores. It wouldn't hurt to check, though.

It doesn't hurt to ask. If nothing else, they might give you a T-shirt, which you could then write "I just bought $9,000 in Apple gear and all I got was this stupid t-shirt" on. :D

Near the end of the fiscal year my friend bought an ibook at the Apple store and they threw in a free 512mb stick of ram if he bought applecare... I was jealous :)

Student discount on that kind of machine? Holy crap! What kind of student is buying a $4000+ system? You're a lucky student! There are restrictions to buying with the student discount, you may only qualify for one discounted monitor.
