Well... that was interesting. I just installed 10.3.5 and iPhoto 2.0.1 (apparently an upgrade for those who don't have iLife?).

Anyway, everything went fine, but Software Update crashed right at the very end, right after optimization reached 100% (I guess while it was trying to show the dialog saying everything went OK?). So I rebooted after that, and it works fine.

I've never had a problem with an Apple update, and this doesn't really count... Seems to be fine. And yeah, Safari feels a little peppier.

More detailed info from here:
http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n25791

Bluetooth enhancements
Bluetooth FIle Exchange now works better with Bluetooth-capable Hewlett-Packard printers.
Resolves an issue in which an application that's performing an asynchronous Bluetooth operation could quit unexpectedly, if the computer went to sleep before the data transfer was complete and the "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" preference setting was disabled.
Addresses an issue in which Bluetooth File Exchange could unexpectedly quit if you tried to copy several files but one or more of them already existed at the target location.
Networking, Internet enhancements
If you had difficulties connecting to the Internet with a Comcast cable modem and your account uses DHCP configuration (as opposed to PPPoE), then this update can help you connect more easily. If it doesn't, contact Comcast for further assistance. (An example of this issue would be that your computer can't get an IP address when connected to the cable modem, and your Network preferences are set to configure via DHCP.)
Improves the way Safari handles certain kinds of GIFs, including ones that could cause Safari to quit unexpectedly.
Reintroduces shorter server pathnames; the overall limit remains 89 characters, but now only 24 characters (instead of 39 with Mac OS X 10.3 through 10.3.4) are reserved for the beginning of the pathname. More... (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107695)
Other enhancements
Image Capture can now import MPEG-4 movies (.MP4) from compatible digital cameras.
Resolves a potential data loss issue after renaming a Mail mailbox file.
Addresses an issue for Mac OS X 10.3.4 in which Installer might unexpectedly quit when installing software that has a Japanese name.
Corrects an issue in which analog speakers connected to a PowerBook or iBook during sleep sometimes didn't produce sound after waking the computer.
Resolves an issue with Mac OS X 10.3.4 in which the internal microphones of some iBook (Dual USB) computers would not be available to applications or Sound preferences.
Allows the "Attach" button of Eudora version 6.0 and 6.0.1 to work as expected.
Improves support for NTFS-formatted volumes.
Updates the libpng (Portable Network Graphics) component.
Includes recent Security Updates.

As for the size difference... if you were missing other updates previously, then 10.3.5 will roll them all in for you, and you'll have one large update instead of a bunch of smaller ones.

Nice of them, eh?

bluetooth remote control functionality in 10.3.5

A dumb followup question on this: What can a cell phone-turned-remote do for a computer? Wake it from sleep and such, or something(s) more extravagant?

Luca
2004-08-09, 22:51
Look at Airport Express. Why have it if all you're going to do is sit in front of your computer to control the music instead of sitting in front of the stereo?

Unfortunately, Bluetooth's range is limited to about 30 feet. If only Airport Express had a Bluetooth receiver and would relay any iTunes commands to the computer via WiFi, it would be even more useful. As it is, you may be able to control iTunes using a phone remote, but only when you're near the computer.

Just tested it on a Dual 2Ghz and it does not wake from sleep. I never use sleep in the first place. There may also be some changes in how multi-processor machines divy-up tasks, since one of my processors is always at 100% and the other is near 90%. Before both processors would fluctuate at 80-90%.

17" PB still wakes from sleep when a USB peripheral is un-plugged while the lid is closed, which is my mouse. 10.3 did wake, 10.3.1 did not, but 10.3.2 and on has. ANNOYING!!! Why is this? I always ask but never get an answer. It is a mystery!

I have a DUAL 500 G4, updated to 10.3.5 and everything seemed fine - and working faster - until I booted up iTunes.. then all my music was speeded up, crazy. It was like they were on helium! I have an AudioWerk 2 sound card so I thought it may be that but even putting sound through computer it was speeded up. I think I may have fixed it by messing around with the sound control panel... at least it was Ok this morning when I played a few tunes before coming to work.

Anyone else got a similar response from the 10.3.5 update?!

thanks

Noooooooooo!

This is the first time I've been hit by a bad update.

I installed 10.3.5 on my Cube, and now when I boot, I get the login screen, as opposed to automatically logging in. So, I figure, no big deal, I just have to login and fix it, right?

(Can you see where this is going?)

That's right, it rejects my password. I try no password, no go. "password" doesn't work. Anything else I should try? I've tried the "Other" user, but it still doesn't work.

I think this was an issue with some of the earlier updates. You might just want to start up from the Install CD and just change the password that way.

Didn't work.

Not good.

Post reads like morse code. :p

Anyways, no, it didn't work. I checked, and the data is still all there, but I don't have anywhere to put it should I need too. None of my other computers have enough space. Its on a Firewire drive. This makes me think that maybe the system got screwed. This happened to me once before, and I had to reinstall, but not refomat. I can't believe I forgot about that when I was writing my last post.

why put a nice fast machine like that to sleep, when you could do something useful with the spare CPU cycles like folding (http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/) for a nice Mac based (http://teammacosx.homeunix.com/index.html) team and help work to cure terminal diseases?

The update screwed my drive. Something about the B-tree. Disk Utility couldn't fix it, and I don't have anything to fix it with.

I'm backing up the drive, and I'll reformat it soon.
