Well, here's my first attempt.

Took me a couple of hours converting the content from a previous site developed using RapidWeaver.

Dai,

Nice site :). I like the boxes with gradient fills you've used - are they just shapes placed in the appropriate pace on the page?

daibach
2006-01-22, 05:14
Thanks.

Yep, they're just shapes with a gradient fill. They work the same was as they do in Keynote. You can place them anywhere on the page and arrange them so they are at the back of the text or images. Adding shadows to the images makes them stand out against the gradient.

I'm still playing with iWeb. It's fairly basic but definitely got potential. With the exception of the photo pages, most of the pages were based on the Welcome page - I just deleted the suggested items and added my own.

I totally love iWeb! I used frontpage for a long long time and had no end of problems with it. iWeb is fantastic!
http://www.bryanbutterwick.net

What I'd like added for iWeb '07:- automatic function for adding comments/ visitor book, dynamically updating iTunes playlists from the media browser (I have my top 25 most played playlist and that obviously changes.

Also: option in iPhoto: 'optimize for web viewing'

scratt
2006-01-22, 06:08
The only problem I see with all of these apps is that they don't get anybody to web optimize their images...

I was quite suprised at both RapidWeaver and iWeb for that. Perhaps I am missing feature somewhere...

But everytime someone goes.. 'Hey look at my web site'.. I get peeved at how long the images take to load..

turbulentfurball
2006-01-22, 06:38
Hehe... I was going to do that... But got lazy. Just drag and drop existing pictures! I did optimize pics with my old site when I had dial up, but I don't notice load time so much with Broadband. This site is sure eating up server space due to my laziness though!

When I look at the slideshows on my web site (http://web.mac.com/daveabrey/iWeb/Site/Welcome.html), I get a new window with a black background, and an auto-running slideshow where the images have part of them reflected below it. You also have controls you can bring up to play / pause / fwd / back, and a strip along the top where you can select specific pics to display. However, if you look at the albums linked in the other sites in this thread, they have slideshows that look more like the old .Mac Homepage ones, with metallic surround and manual forward / back controls. The refection under the images in my slideshows is what I'm trying to get rid of :).

I just dragged my '25 most played' playlist from the media browser into a text box. I didn't do anything else to it. I would have liked the artist name to be included automatically though.

It was quickly created in iWeb then uploaded to the server.

I'm not 100% happy with iWeb because it's kind of hard to make small updates to the site if it's not on .mac. But for a quick and dirty tool, it's nice. I could see this working very well for people who have no experience with web site creation. For me, it was just a trial run.

For SFTP I use Fetch (http://fetchworks.com/), since my University provides it free. I've used Cyberduck too though, and it's pretty nice. The cool thing about Fetch is that in the 5.1 beta they added Automator actions, so it should be pretty easy to set up automatic webpage uploading with iWeb. I'll be trying that once I get ahold of iWeb.

I'm getting misaligned pictures appearing on the front page of the blog when I use custom sizes.
The pictures look fine on that days page, but on the main one a couple of the pics overlap other ones.

Anyone else getting this?

I'm going to try and remake the custom pics the same size as the template and see if that helps.

/I'd post a link to my iWeb, but it's for tracking my DVD projects at work and not for public consumption (tho' industrious people could easily figure it out probably).
//If you do figure it out, please don't post it. Please.

Brad
2006-01-25, 22:54
Is it the one starting with a "geisha" blog entry? If so, it looks okay here. Maybe I misunderstood your explanation of the problem.

NosferaDrew
2006-01-25, 23:01
No, it's the main page (if you click "Blog") that shows several days entries.

I just resaved and published again to .Mac and all looks well now, but I've been having this problem for a couple of days - but only with the images that I've made a different size from the template picture that I'm replacing.

Maybe it just needs a few minutes to propagate on the server.

Anyway, thanks for looking in Brad.

Brad
2006-01-25, 23:14
Yeah, the main page is what I was seeing. Geisha, Are We, Slow, Lazy.... etc. Maybe I was looking into the future and saw the new version before you updated it? :)

NosferaDrew
2006-01-26, 00:58
You saw the right page, but many times the images (thumbnails) for each day are misaligned.
It's happened whenever I've been unsatisfied with the template image size and replaced it with my own image at a different size.

I think it's a timing thing or a cache thing now that I'm thinking about it.
Seems to resolve itself soon after I publish, so it's pobably on my end.

If I experience it again I'll grab a screenie.

Thanks again.

So no one is getting thumbnail location anomalies on the front page of the blog?

I have a custom sized pic (i.e. not the same size as the template picture I replaced) and each time I publish it floats into a different position.
Example (http://homepage.mac.com/drew1/.Pictures/iWeb_overlap.jpg)

Once I publish, I can see that the positioning is wacked, so I reposition, save then re-publish - which is not great task, but I'd just like to know why it's occurring.
Any ideas?

Here's (http://www.foundationimaging.net/newsite) my contribution.

Basically this was one afternoon using iWeb, Photoshop and Macromedia Contribute. Please don't pay too much attention to the content as this is not yet ready for prime time - just wanted to add to the frey...

I used PS to make the background images and Contribute was only used to make two of the linked pages open up in -new- windows and to strip the navegation buttons from the splash page. Otherwise, it's all iWeb. (I would be very surprised if these features don't find their way into the next version of iWeb)

BTW - Contribute is a VERY usefull app if you make many updates to the textual content of your websites - and are more of an artist than a programmer. I don't know any HTML, yet I can make most of my client's website updates and never call my programmer (sorry programmers).

the purple and green button seem out of place with the rest of the color scheme

counters are cheesy

put the "made on a mac" and heart rapidweaver more discretely at the bottom.... this is a website not a formula 1 car

you could photoshop up the two photos to make it more visually interesting/arresting..... both of them lack 'pop'

if someone clicks the button title like "film gallery" for example... don't point them to a page that says "Please use the navigation palate at the top to navigate to view one of Orloffi'm's major film productions." instead make a page that maybe links to each of the subcategories... in the case of films you could maybe put a screenshot or title for each and/or a brief description

as far as the cookie film (only one i watched so far) you need to spend more time on lighting.... the main character was often times very poorly lit and not in some dramatic way....

BUT please please understand that the cookie film... yeah, i hate it. it did it in a weekend because my big production went overtime and i had to scrap it. so i ended up doing that p.o.s.

- New content (classic old stuff)
- "Made for Mac" and "Rapidweaver" are near the bottom
- Deleted counter

It kind of sums up what I've found to be good and bad from iWeb. It's a site I do for a mate who writes for Diving magazines and with it being largely gallery based the flexibility of moving images around and adding more in iWeb has been fantastic (tended to use old school HTML coding on the older version). Unfortunately, although the first attempt looked fantsatic with all the drop shadows and image frames etc it took *forever* to load. The real probelm with iWeb is that it makes it much easier to make a good looking website - but much harder to look at one! I'll stick with it as it's handy to add new images so easily and create new galleries etc but it's far from the perfect application - (no control over link colours - come on????) but I can't wait for v2.0.

I think I have said this before.. And I think to you..

Making a web page take over the whole screen of your computer is VERY VERY ANNOYING and is reminiscent of pr0n or illegal MP3 sites. It makes your whole site one which I (and I suspect others) will simply close the window of and never ever visit again.

Amen. Little pisses me off more than websites that use javascript to resize existing windows.

Some people have windows set to less-than-fullscreen because it improves multitasking productivity. We don't want to be forced into fullscreen, especially if we have a giant display and your page just makes it waste thousands of pixels.

Change that behavior now. Please.

chucker
2006-04-23, 03:32
Yip. Sorry, but the site is insulting my intelligence by insinuating that I'm incapable of resizing a browser window myself. Please don't use JavaScript's window.resize unless you're developing one of those weird things called 'web applications'. For a general web site / home page, no.

Seeing all the great work that everyone has been able to put together finally convinced me to go out and get a copy of iLife 06. I can't say how happy I am with iWeb. I had a website before, but I never updated it because it was such a hassle to figure out all the code. iWeb is a sheer joy to work with compared to the old system I had to use.

Anyway, here is my site: johnferraro.org. It's still pretty basic, kind of utilitarian, but what you see is the product of only a few days tinkering. I know the "welcome to..." on the front page is messed up. I've got to figure out why that's acting up...

One thing I was hoping someone could help me with, however, is how to set up seperate photo albums. As it is now, I have all my photos on the same page. I have seen several people in this very thread that have multiple albums set up, and if you could provide any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

John,

Just create separate pages for each set of photos using the Photo page template - you can have as many photo pages on your site as you want. Then drag any pictures from the iPhoto section of the media browser onto the picture placeholder on the photo page.

If you have a few photo pages you'll probably then want to create a separate photo index page. Create a blank page to use as your photo index. On this page, create links to each individual photo page by dragging a relevant picture from the media browser. Click the picture and set the 'enable as hyperlink' in the Link tab of the inspector and choose the relevant photo page in the drop-down list of your pages.

If you create a photo index page, you probably won't want the individual photo pages shown in the iWeb navigation menu - just un-check the "Include page in navigation menu" option on the Page tab of the inspector.

You can see how I did it with my Holidays and Photos pages at http://www.dai-towell.net

That's it! Hope that helps.

Not a bad idea. Does the new blogging feature of iWeb have comments? I haven't tried it yet.

But if I use .mac to host my domain, what happens to my old domain? I don't want to tell people about a new URL, just have them go to the same old one they've been going to.

With .Mac your blog will have the ability for people to leave comments, but only through a .Mac hosted site. This was actually in the initial release.

But if I use .mac to host my domain, what happens to my old domain? I don't want to tell people about a new URL, just have them go to the same old one they've been going to.

You should be able to direct people to you old host via the IP address. If it's shared hosing it'll be something like "77.123.456.123/~torifile/index.php". While this will look crude, you won't have to get another domain name since your current one will point to your .Mac hosted site.

What if I add my domain to the "Personal Domains" part of my .mac account? It's hosted on .mac, right? As far as I can tell from my reading that it is. Anyone have any idea how these are getting stored? HTML or some sort of .mac database-thing that we don't know about?

I don't have personal experience with .Mac domains yet at all so someone else will have to pipe in on that one. I think that is all you'll have to do though and you might need to unpark the domain where it is now, I just don't know right now.

Dai, your site looks very nice. Currently I'm using RW, but am considering a switch (with the upgrade price and cost of add-ons). How does iWeb compare to RW? If it's like other recent Apple applications, it may take another version or two before it becomes robust enough for serious use. That being said, I'm impressed with how you did your site using it.

I wasn't going to bother with any of my iWebs, since they're basically the basic templates, but I just thought I'd show off my simple picture-wall-area for the heck of it: Link (http://web.mac.com/tmaromine/Site/Welcome.html). (For some reason the counter doesn't shadow and have it's 18% opacity like I set it in iWeb, like my email button on the other side...)

Thanks for the help. I tried google before, and no one knew on Apple's site. But I check google again, thanks tyo the link you sent because I didn't know what A Record was. Now I do, so I google to find out what web.mac.com IP adress was and:

I posted this on the apple.com discussion forums because I know that many people were looking for a way to make "theirdomainname.com" load their .mac sites without having to use "www."

I am posting it here because I figured some might find it useful.

I was looking for this same thing and I found a solution. I use godaddy.com for my domain registration and in order to get my site to load without the www I needed to change my A (Host) Name. This was set to a Host of @ (which is a substitute for mydomainname.com) and a Point To value of an IP address that was pointing to a godaddy domain parking info site. So basically, if someone typed www.mydomain.com they would get my iWeb site on .mac. If they typed mydomain.com without the www they would see the godaddy parking page.

The problem is that in order to change the A (Host) name on godaddy you can't use web.mac.com as you do for the CNAME www. You need an IP address. So, I used Network Utility (inside Applications/Utilities) to perform a Lookup on web.mac.com and found that the IP address was 17.250.248.34

I then went to the Total DNS Control Panel for my domain on the godaddy website and changed the A (Host) entry for @ in the Points To column to 17.250.248.34

About 45 minutes later mydomain.com points to my iWeb .mac hosted site. Sweet!

Frank

That's actually pretty good, especially considering it's done in iWeb. I had no idea it was capable of that kind of stuff.

Would it be possible to make it so that the music doesn't start before you hit play? You know just in case people are checking out your site at work.

I meant to post this earlier, as I finally got my site up and running using iWeb -- very basic compared to some of the neat stuff others are doing. I use iWeb, Transmit to upload and Dreamhost as my provider. All in all, the combination works reasonably well.

i built my own site, mainly for blogging and storing photos using iWeb. The only disappointing thing is that i cannot edit it other computers, except for my home one. Although i have just had a thought, what if i put the iWeb package on my iDisk..... Hmm i will have ot try that when i get home.

Anyway here is the site:
www.piracystudio.com

don't worry there is nothing dodgy on it, its safe for work and it doesn't actually have anything to pirating or piracy. I just liked the name.

I cannot wait for the new iWeb with Facebook intergration ( i sound like a 12 year old) but since everyone these days uses facebook it is a good system to let them know i have updated my blog.

You are a really talented guy. I was very impressed, although, since it's clear you are very creative I think it could come through a little bit more in your website. If not, I would try to make your work and art more prominent.

Yeah, I really didn't want to make everything too flashy.. it was supposed to be kinda like shorting through a giant physical portfolio. I also am kinda limited by my basic knowledge of coding, so everything is stock iWeb code. Someday I'd like to learn to more advanced languages so I could make some truly cool stuff.

Also, the mountain video was taken on Trail Ridge Road near Estes Park, Colorado.

That you very much, I appreciate your support a ton. I put together a finished CD of 12 songs (including the ones on the website, although I cleaned them up some) called Frozen. I have been wondering whether I should release it or not.. it could be fun to see how people like it. :)

Actually, I built a website for a friend of mine using RapidWeaver 5, and I have to admit, it's not too shabby at all. However, for my personal website, I prefer to stick to the ol' good iWeb since it seamlessly integrates with MobileMe, of which I have been a member since the iTools days.

As far as iWeb '11 is concerned, I still hope it's just another delay, and that it will launch along with the iWork '11 suite. :)

True. But still, nothing can beat iWeb's much user-friendlier, more powerful and flexible WYSIWYG building tools. There's a comparable third-party plug-in for RapidWeaver called Blocks (which is not free). Alas, it's not as reliable, consistent or even as stylish as iWeb's inspector.
