There was a thread in here the other day that some Apple Stores were selling iMac G5 20" for $999. I just called my local store (40 miles away!) and they said they would drop the price to $1299 but not $999. However, they offered 17" refurbished at $799!

Think that is a good price or should I keep looking for a Windows replacement for my kids computer and see if I can find one of those $999 20"? At $799 it seems hard to justify the new Intel based machines for $1299--a $500 discount (even refurbished with 1 year warranty) seems cheap. (However, i would prefer the 20" screen real estate.)

Thoughts or advise?

Depends on the specs. It probably only has 256MB RAM, in which case you should buy an upgrade for that.

it's a steal at that price - I'd jump on it.

I'd say it depends on the specs, too. Is it 1.6 GHz? 1.8? 1.9? How much RAM does it have? What graphics card?

It's probably not the iSight/Front Row model (though if it is, GO FOR IT), but lots of things have changed throughout the iMac G5's three revisions. I'd learn more.

Got to the Apple Store today and foudn out the person on the phone mis-quoted the prices. They were $1199 for the 17" (1.9) and $1399 for the 20" (2.1) which is hardly any saving at all.

I thought a 17" @ $799 was too good to be true. . . .

The closest apple store to me said Apple will NOT be lowering the prices of the leftover G5's. I was disappointed because the coreduo is not essential for me and a G5 would be fine. But hey, if they're the same price, I'll probably go for the faster machine.

Yes. . .it makes no sense. I am going to continue to wait. I am guess there will be a 'sale' at some point here in the next 30 days.

Wow, holy crap. That's a reduction on a new one, not refurbished either. Wow.

Yup. Seems a US-only thing for now though. I hope it'll show up for Germany soon cause a friend of mine is in the market for that.

For what it's worth, when I went into my local Apple store on Friday to buy my mini, they tried to talk me into a 17" G5 for $799, so they are out there. I didn't bite because I already have a 20" Viewsonic panel and plan to buy an Intel-based machine later in the year, when the mini will go to my fiancee.

Rick:

Out of curosity, did they say what they were selling the 20" for? Was the 17" iSight 1.9 GHZ? Can you tell me which store so I can call them please.

Don't know if they had any 20" refurbs, but they had at least a couple 17s - sorry, didn't see if they were revB or revC, but I got the impression they were 1.9 iSights (not positive, though). It was the West Farms store.

Holy smokes...as someone who was looking at the $1299 17" iMac his next time around...

Not Intel, but...so what? I wouldn't be waiting on Adobe's Universal stuff either...

...as someone who just bought a 17" iMac G5...

I'm kidding. I love my iMac. But a 20" screen/faster processor/bigger hard drive for $49 more (less than three months later) is hearbreaking.

I truly believe, regarding the iMac, Apple is out to cause as many wrist-slittings and window-jumpings as possible.

:p

It seems like every three or so weeks, it's getting revved...

We spent $1799 for our Rev. B (2GHz, etc.) back in August or so. As I've complained here a few times, we've only just NOW started using them full-time (in fact, one of my co-workers is still on his G4 because he's in the middle of a large, PageMaker-based project for the next few days...he'll be migrating early next week, I think).

Point is, for as little as we've truly used the damn things in six months (they sat in their boxes for a LONG time, much to my dismay), we could've purchased three of them TODAY for $1,499 and saved $900 (3 x the $1799 we originally paid)...and still not be that much behind or "in the hole" (I've only been using mine, full-time, for a couple of weeks now.

I WOULD'VE GLADLY WAITED had I known I'd actually be using it this little these past few months!!!!

A complete heartbreaker, yes.

:( :grumble:

And I would've had a thinner, lighter machine, a Mighty Mouse, iSight, etc.

Waaaaaaaah!

:D

ya know, if anything, the iMac is finally back to the upgrade cycle it was on back in the bubbly CRT model days. Those things were revved like every 5-7 months or so. Apple really only stopped doing that with the iMac lamp model. And since switching to the new style, the updates have resumed being rapid. Clearly the lamp design was a hindrance for them that they underestimated.

EDIT: ah, did you change your timeframe? Was it 4-5 months originally?

:)

Yeah, averaged about eight or so months, the jellybean era.
