already have a primary home computer (Powermac G5 2.0 duel) just need some thing to display my work to clients and possibly do some light photoshop. My wife doesn't want me to bring clients to my home. My budget is 1300.00, so I 've been looking at ibook 14 refurb
and or powerbook 12 refurb but i'm wondering if my photoshop will run smoothly on the new intel based Macbooks and if so should I wait for the ibook replacement

Word is that Photoshop doesn't run too smoothly but do you really need to display *using* PS? Couldn't you use some other image browser? But you're probably better off getting a powerbook at your budget. You'll get better PS performance. A 12" powerbook would do very nicely.

If you need now, a refurbished 12" PB looks like the answer - otherwise you'll have to contend with Adobe transition issues.

get a 12-inch iBook (new or refurb) and max out its RAM yourself.
you wind up with a faster machine for much less money

Is having more ram a better solution? 12" PowerBook 1.25gb max New ibook 12" or 14" 1.5 gb ram can you really tell the difference or is it all in the video card. If more ram is the case then maybe its better to get a refurb of last years 15" 1.33 mhz Pb because that should max out at 2gb of ram.

Anything over 1GB is good running Tiger....or is it all in the video card....For most apps, differences in video card won't be noticeable.

I'd think twice before buying a 12" to show clients stuff. Unless, of course, you'll be using a projector.

It might be a shiny Powerbook you're toting under your arm when youwal in but when you and your client have to hunch over the display to see your work it might undermine your 'street cred'.

My 2 cents.

I see what you're saying about not being able to see it clearly but my budget wont allow me to spend any more so either a refurb 12" ibook w ram upgrade to 1.5gb ( crucial) or 12" refurb Powerbook or 15" 1.33 if I can find one on apples' website:confused:

crucial ram is pretty expensive, you're better off getting it from newegg

That sounds like a good option. Even though the 12" and 14" iBook share the same resolution, the 14" will probably work better for showing images to a client.

What you want is a mini, and a monitor. Do your work either on your work station, or the mini, and since the monitor and mini are about as portable as a laptop, and possibly cheaper, you will be able to get a larger display.

I'm looking for a laptop. I already have a powermac G5 at home with an Samsung SycMaster191t
So so far my options are a 14" ibook or last years 15" powerbook 1.33mhz refurb of course
Plus I kind of want a laptop that pretty durable and some thing I don't have to baby which seems to be the case with the powerbooks but I may be wrong

My use will be Photoshop CS2, MS Office, iLife and internet

Aperture looks tempting but not a must have

Your thoughts

14" ibook or last years 15" powerbook 1.33mhz refurb If that's the choice, the PB wins easily unless the iBook is saving you significant $'s.Plus I kind of want a laptop that pretty durable and some thing I don't have to baby which seems to be the case with the powerbooks but I may be wrong??

The PowerBooks are not as durable as the iBooks.

The PowerBooks are not as durable as the iBooks.Absolutely, not least because the iBooks are designed for student use. But I've never had the thought that a PowerBook needs to be "babied".

You might want to look at used iBooks/PowerBooks being sold over at www.powerbookcentral.com . I just sold my 1.25GHz 15" SuperDrive PBG4 for $800 a couple of weeks ago. With all the price slashing Apple has done on the PBG4 units you may find some decent deals over there.

Have you considered a non Apple laptop ?

Why not pick up a 12" at Amazon. With rebate the price is 1,250.

going for the new ibook 14inch with edu. disc. i 've found out that the 12 is far to small for my needs and a 17'' or 15" PB just have wider screens and the're just way out of my budget

Congrats! But I hope you realize that the 14" screen won't actually give you any more screen space. Things will just be bigger.
