Shoot for 50 cents a gig for a firewire drive.

Something you might want to consider is buying an internal hard drive and putting that in an external drive enclosure (newegg's a good place to go for things like that). I find it's a lot cheaper than getting a ready-made external drive.

In general, be sure to get an external drive or drive enclosure that supports USB 2.0 and Firewire 400, as its been shown many times that Firewire 400 is actually faster then USB 2.0.
