View Full Version : iTMS Free Song Listing
Well, as iTMS now gives away two free songs a week, I thought it would be wise to list what they are.
This weeks official free download is:
Josh Rouse's James (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=7318476)
This weeks Discovery Download is:
Brett Dennen's Desert Sunrise (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=7158018)
EDIT: Well, seeing as this is the first post in the thread, might as well add the jumbo perma-links.
Single of the Week (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=7318476)

I agree, great idea. But where do you find these "Discovery Downloads"? Do you just hunt 'em out, or are they listed somewhere? I looked through the New Music Tuesdays email and only found the official free download.
There was a story on MacNN that there are many free songs hidden out there in the catalog. The one example given in the article was "in the process of being edited" when I tried to get it, however.
http://onsager.cop.uop.edu/~mccallum/cullum.jpg
I memory serves me, there is one free song each week that is displayed on the iTMS front page, but there is also a discovery download that is only shown on the front page of a specific genre. Hence the discovery.
Last week's was in the jazz section, this week's is in the folk section so we have to keep checking in to see what area has the free download.
I should add that I got both the free song off Jamie Cullum's twentysomething (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=7415640) and another song also entitled twentysomething. Damn you Apple! I did buy more music because of the free download.
great thread idea!! :)

Maybe you can update your thread (http://forums.appleinsider.org/showthread.php?t=158) with iTMS links too... ;)
I actually accidentally bought that pixies album while looking for it... oh well :D :p

this week free stuff:
chick song (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=7318476)
and
inspirational song (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=7158018)

isn't drag and drop awesome?
Free song (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=5869862&selectedItemId=5869798): Snow Patrol, "Run"
Discovery Download (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=3650498&selectedItemId=3650469): Rosalia de Sousa, "Maria Moita"
Edit: Copying the link from the front page now brings you to whatever the free download is every week. You'll find that the above link (chick song) point's to this week's free song.
Here's the URL for each week's Single of the Week (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=7318476).
And each week's Discovery Download (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=7158018).
sweet
how do you figure that?
time to add some links to my profile...

should we somehow "sticky" the free song info so it is easy to find??
thanks
g
That would be nice.
However I am having trouble downloading the discovery download this week. It says: "The item you are trying to buy is no longer available. The availability of the item changed while you were using the store."
This is an important thread and deserves to be stickied before it falls off the page. Free stuff is always good!

I like the Jem tune. I like how they're providing free downloads of songs people would actually listen to and not random stuff from the back of their catalog.

Wasn't Jem that weird Barbie rip-off cartoon from the eighties? She was in a rock band and had pink hair or something. I must be thinking of something else. :err:

We already have two dynamic links here that automatically direct you to the current free songs. In case you missed them:
Single of the Week (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=7318476)
Discovery Download (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=7158018)
If you want a list of all of the past free songs, just hit up the iMix titled "iTunes FREE Songs Up To Date" -- it's on the front page of the most popular iMixes.

brad your discovery download link takes me to a $0.99 song
Must be a temporary bug at the store. That link has been working perfectly for several weeks. In fact, I used it earlier this week to get the free discovery download.
Try again in a few days.

This free song is…interesting. Apple Q3 Earnings Report (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=18183434&selectedItemId=18183427)
Edit: I also found the free 9/11 commission hearings (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/com.apple.jingle.app.store.DirectAction/viewPlayListsPage?fcId=4517538&pageType=playlists&id=28), which are for some reason in the classical genre

Anyone know why these links don't do anything in OW 5? Did I miss something?
Links to the iTunes Music store will currently fail in OmniWeb because of some JavaScript code Apple uses to work around a bug in Safari.

Nope. I've had no luck at all.
not a free song, but iTMS has the remastered WB grateful deads, and they've priced europe 72 (3lp set, 2 cd, nearly 2 hours) at $9.99.
This week it's Jedd Hughes with High Lonesome. Haven't listed to it yet.
Discovery Download is missing again.

These links no longer work for me. They haven't for the last few weeks. Anybody know why? When I click 'em I get a message that says "The item you requested is not currently available in the U.S. store" or something like that.
Me too :\
I'm going to make an addition to the original post linking to this playlist:
iTunes FREE Songs Up to Date (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPublishedPlaylist?id=47821)
brad, put an "itms://" instead of "http://" on those links so they work in OW as well as Safari
Stupid retarded OmniWeb. :p
I copied the link straight out of iTunes! OW should respect that. How many people are going to know to change something like that to get their links working?
<end rant>
And on a related note, do an "I'm feeling lucky" Google search for the terms "playlistID free song dynamic links". How nice. :)
cool.
oh and look up at my link to OmniGroup about that shortcoming in the current OW build...
and thanks. :D
Whenever I try the dynamic links for discovery and weekly download, it tells me this feature isn't available in the US store. Anybody have any idea why?
Read up half a page. ;) It's been doing that for weeks. I suspect they just changed the URL for it and no one has bothered to find the new one.
The best option now is to use the Free Song iMix to get the weekly and discovery downloads.
Read, haha listen to this kid and his READING. Psh.
Oh yeah...thanks :)

Freedom Fighters is a good song, Quicksand though, kinda goofy.
The Free 25 minute long "street official" mixtape was a nice idea. Though the DJ is pretty annoying, and I already had a lot of those cuts anyway. But, hopefully in the future there will be some good stuff I don't have on it.

oh, and there is a new thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=102524) at the macrumors forums that has a nicely detailed catalogue of every free piece of media available on the iTMS (in the UK too!)

I figured it out a couple days ago. If you redeem 1 free song via pepsi bottle cap, you can thereafter download all the free songs you like.
:smokey: nice!
... hold up cool@pple - how did you get it to work from China?
(Did you provide credit card details with a US address - or is it some Chinese trickery, b/c I'd love to know!)
I really enjoy the free songs that I get from Mercedes Benz. Get 15 songs, very easy listening music.
Here are three more sources of great, free music:
Mercedes Benz Mixed Tape (http://www3.mercedes-benz.com/mixedtape/mixedtape.html). This is what Amadeus mentioned above, and they have some very good stuff there. A new one is released every six weeks or so, and you can't download the old ones - so don't forget to subscribe to their newsletter (they won't spam you).
GarageBand.com (http://www.garageband.com/). This has nothing to do with the Apple product of the same name, but it's a site for people to show off their independent music. Some very good stuff there.
FM4 Soundpark (http://fm4.orf.at/soundpark/). This is hosted by an Austrian radio station, but has music from Germany and many other parts of Europe. It's in German, but don't let that scare you. It should be easy enough to find your way around even if you don't understand the text - the little list at the top right is a good starting point (and that's in English). There's some excellent music there, but it's difficult to get a good overview because there's so much.
Another vote for the MB mixed-tapes. Really cool that they offer this, and most of it is pretty damn good.
Also, to piggyback on ghoti's post, you can find a lot of great singles from semi-obscure bands over at Insound (http://www.insound.com/mp3/). Have a look.
*note* the mp3 ID tags are inevitably screwed, so take care to fix them before you dowload a bazillion songs and get lost. I speak from experience. :)

That's true for some of the GarageBand songs too. I wonder why people don't bother putting proper ID3 tags in - that's killing half the promotion value.
BTW, the Mercedes Benz Mixed Tape files have cover artwork in the files. Looks great on the iPod Photo ... :smokey:

I hate to use this thread for this, but it seems mostly appropriate: Conviction is available for free download. It's the pilot of the new NBC show. I was uninterested by the commercials, but free is good, so there you go...
