On the apple UK refurb store: iMac

17-inch widescreen LCD with 1440x900 resolution
1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor with 2MB shared L2 cache
512MB (single SO-DIMM) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300)
160GB Serial ATA hard drive
Slot-load 8x double-layer SuperDrive
ATI Radeon X1600 graphics with 128MB GDDR3 memory
Built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0

for £693

I think this is the one. Now I heard that you can't get more ram fitted by apple on refurbs, so where would be the best place to buy one, and what can i get? Are they easy to fit and are instructions provided?

Thanks, friends.
Feel free to say: "dont get this one!"

It's easy to add RAM later. I'm not sure who sells RAM in the UK, but it shouldn't be too hard to find a 1 GB module somewhere. Here in the US they cost $80-$100.

how about crucial- i know they are quite big ram sellers?

Crucial has a really good reputation among Mac users but they tend to be expensive. If it's only a little more expensive, go for it... but if you'd save a significant amount of money by going with another brand, I'd suggest doing that.

Ok. I can put a max. 1 GIG of Ram extra in then? I dont really want to get rid of the 512 chip and replace with a gig, to be honest, the speed will be excessive for my needs.

What? I don't understand.

The iMac has two RAM slots. It comes with 512 MB in one slot. You can add another 1 GB to that in the other slot for a total of 1.5 GB - very respectable, and probably enough for as long as you own the computer. You can later replace the 512 MB one if you want.

And you can never have enough RAM. RAM simply allows the computer to work to a higher potential. Without enough RAM (512 MB isn't really enough), it's a bottleneck. Add more RAM and you remove the bottleneck. It's not the same as getting a computer with a more powerful processor (which might, in fact, be overkill if you have simple uses in mind).

Yeh what I meant is that I will get another 1 Gig Stick, but I don't think its going to be worth (financially) removing the original 512MB stick and replacing it.

Cheers.

Despite what people around here think, Crucial are actually pretty reasonable in the UK in terms of pricing. This is for one main reason - there are very, very few bricks-and-mortar stores that stock an array of components, meaning that memory prices here never get as low as in the US.

1GB for the iMac costs £99.86 (US$184.69) delivered.

Brick-and-mortar stores in the US seem to charge about 50% more than online stores do.

Damn, it's really $185 for 1 GB of RAM? That's like, twice what it costs here. I paid $130 for 1 GB for a Mac mini a year ago.

We are used to being ripped off. We pay 79p per iTunes song for example- equivalnt of about $1.70 for you- no reason, apple are just bastards like that. All the apple stuff is way more expensive over here.

Sell that 512 MB stick on ebay and it will be worth it. You could get 2GB or ram for almost the price of one if you recoup some of the expense by selling the 512 mb stick!

But Luca was talking about 3rd party RAM, so I guess it isn't just Apple that is the "bastard" here.

EDIT: by which I mean, it sounds like the UK gets ripped off for electronics in general. I've also heard game consoles are more expensive, too.

can you order from NewEgg in the UK?

If so, they have great prices. I don't know that I've ever looked. For some reason crucial always assumes I'm from the UK though, which is weird.

So I sold the eMac... how do I get it so that none of my info is on there- i need to keep it non-reformatted as there is software on there for the buyer but I want to get rid of everything else- any tips?

Well you probably registered the software with your info.

Have someone buy the RAM in the US and mail it to you if it is a lot cheaper! :D

If you don't send the buyer the original discs for the software, I wouldn't advise doing that.

Not always. I would buy cheaper RAM from the US, for example, but it would actually cost more thanks to duty and tax imposed on imported goods worth over $20.

If you have included the software CDs, as required by law, then it shouldn't be a problem for him to reinstall the software himself. If you haven't included the software CDs then you shouldn't be giving him free unlicensed software.

Seriously, if the bastard wants to get pirated software, tell him to find it on his own. You shouldn't have to give him free software that you bought.

And yeah, if you want to be secure, you should reformat the computer. Just do it.

Wow. Thanks for that information. I had no idea. Never sent anything or bought anything overseas. I have only been out of the US once :( and that was only for 10 days on a school trip to Cuba.

The US doesn't seem to have such duty on small item imports, but Canada (where I live) for example does.

1GB of memory for the Intel iMac with a lifetime warranty is £65.68 delivered through Orcalogic (http://orcalogic.co.uk/asp/prodtype.asp?prodtype=21101&ft=m&st=3). Crucial is expensive.
