I've heard several stories from people who bought their gear in a store and somehow they got a discount for their Applecare or even got it for free...

So does this happen often or do you have to be a top-negociator to get this?

I got it on discount but thats only because I used the educational discount.

I bought a powerbook a few years ago and recieved applecare free as an incentive to buy. That was at Comp-USA.

Student discount knocked like 200 off the price for my powerbook's applecare.

In the UK, buying from the Higher Education and NUS stores automatically entitles you to a discount AND a warranty upgrade to 3 years. You also get one year of telephone support too which makes it a very, very sweet deal!

Got my iMac and my MacBook warrantied until 2009 now!

I bought my 15.4" 2.16GHz MBP a few weeks ago and I got the Apple Care for $265. They said that it was at a discounted price because I'm getting it together with the Mac. If I get it later, I would have to pay $350.

Plus, I did get $100 discount for the MBP itself.

I phoned to order and got a MacBook Pro 15.4" 2.16GHZ / 2GB RAM / 120GB HDD and Applecare for £1700.

I know other people who have phoned and gotten a discount too.

Because of the difficulties I had with my MacBook at first, they met me in the middle on a MBP and gave me the educator's pricing for AppleCare at the regular MacBook price! They did well for me after so many visits to the apple store and so many problems with my first MacBook computers. I went through 3 of them!

I paid for apple care, but the applestore actually gave me a discount for procare that was 20 more than the service...he actually made me sign up so he could give me $20 off.

What is the best way to buy apple care if I am student and already have my computer? Can I just buy it from the online store or the call in?

I was looking into this...it's a fair bit cheaper on Amazon than from Apple itself:
£139 from apple
£89.99 from amazon.

Can I ask if it is pretty necessary to get this care? I don't usually take warrantys, believing them to be an unecessary waste of cash.

soma: get it from Amazon, it's invaluable. Long-term they are very flexible about what you can use it for (ie. they do often turn blind eyes to what damage has been caused by), and I believe it is transferable to a different product too (?).

The telephone support is especially useful to someone like me who is new to the platform (which now feels like home, BTW).

I might just do that then spikeh...is it worth signing up for Pro Care though? I would've thought one or the other and Pro Care is only for 12 months (at £79), though I like the idea of 52 hourly training sessions.

Does anyone know how much Applecare for the iMac is if purchased through the Higher education store (accessed through an education establishments intranet)

My wife is a student and will be back at Uni after the summer break.

Thanks in advance.
