A bunch of websites are reporting that the iMac G5 has shipped. Has anyone on this board received a now shipping email? If so, which iMac (17/20)did you get? Did you customize your order?

Yeah, I got an email notice this morning that mine has shipped. I ordered a bone stock 20" iMac G5 from the Apple Store.

BTW, apparently it's shipping from Shanghai, China according to FedEx. I thought this sounded weird so I called Apple and apparently they have a warehouse there from which they're shipping the new iMacs. Guy on the phone said it should be delivered by Thursday/Friday since I'm in California.

Hmm... I guess so. I'm going to buy my memory from crucial (cheaper) and I didn't bother with the bluetooth package -- I don't mind the cables since I have a 2yr old and the cables are the only things keeping my current keyboard/mouse from disappearing.

I ordered on Sept 3rd.

Then you are a bastard. :)

I ordered mine the minute the store opened. Ship date of 9/30.

Oh well. By the time it gets here I'll be really used to the speed of this G3 600 iMac I have right now... should be quite the little speed boost when my 20" iMac gets here.

BUT OHMYGOD THE VIDEO CARD WILL SUCK.

*ahem* Sorry. Been reading way too many iMac G5 threads online lately.

Hey, are you going to post some prime geek porn photos for us all to enjoy? There's nothing like the thrill of seeing new Apple gear unpacked, photographed from all sides, humorously captioned, etc.

:)

Don't let us down.

And you know me...I like the good ol' "size comparison to a common every object so we can get a sense of scale" photos. Have a Coca-Cola can, a jar of mustard, a credit card and/or a tube of Chap-Stik on standby.

My stock 17" 1.6 shipped tonight. Quite surprised to already have a Fed Ex tracking number and confirmation emails from Apple since I just ordered it about eight hours earlier.

Should arrive on the Wednesday.

Ohhhh... :grumble: :grumble:

I ordered mine the day of the keynot and still have a delivery date of 10/5 !

Mind you, I did order the wireless kits BTO in a 20"

So does this mean that only the 17"ers are shipping at the moment ?

matt

fly pusher they are shipping 17s and 20s, but only non-configued. i, like you, configured a 20" with bluetooth kit and 1GB RAM on 8/31. I have a 10/1 date, although I think it will ship next week. (fingers crossed)

I got my FedEx #'s today 9/ 14. It's coming from Shanghai China. I ordered it on 8/31/04 and am only getting 1 GB ram. I popped for the fast shipping. So it is coming on the fast plane from China. I wish it was built in Taiwan. I hope I am not a ginny pig for a new production facilities bad quality control.

Looks great, but did they drag your box behind the delivery truck or what? :p

I think they should pack the box in a box..maybe in another box just to be safe. The white boxes of the consumer lines are so hard to keep clean.

Not complaining, but I like my stuff clean. :D

Me too. That's why I'll be buying mine, in person, in Atlanta. Oops, I didn't say that...no one heard that. Lalala...

:p

Seriously, something about the 20" just looks nicer. I think it might indeed be that whole chin proportion thing. On the 17" it seems so large and wide, while on the 20" it's a bit more even. Granted, the 17" looks great and I certainly wouldn't turn one down.

But those 20" just seem to "sit" better or something, and look more finished (see my thread over in Apple Products for ANOTHER gallery of a guy's new 20" iMac G5).

eurokrn
2004-09-17, 11:45
Yeah, the box was pretty dirty from the shipment. There was no outside covering over the box so...

Can't really comment on the speed as I haven't done anything major with it yet and this is my first Mac with OS X. I bought it for my wife for managing our digital photo and video collection.

I imported about 5000 photos into a single album in iPhoto and now it's a little sluggish. Well, to clarify, after starting iPhoto it chugs along for a while (a few minutes) doing something (? -- caching the thumbnails??) but then seems to speed up and be ok. I'm guessing that it's because I have the stock 256MB of RAM in there which I plan on upgrading tonight via an additional 512MB. I have no prior experience with iPhoto so maybe it's a known issue or maybe I just shouldn't be putting that many photos into the same album.

I was worried (before the iMac arrived) that the stand was going to be flimsy and the unit might fall over but I'm no longer worried about that. The stand is very heavy and the unit feels solid. It swivels perfectly and does not feel like it'll tip over at all.

It is VERY quiet. Can't hear a thing, not even the drive. And the speakers are awesome. Sound is crystal clear. The screen is VERY bright and clear. Again, no dead pixels. I went through with different colored backgrounds just to make sure.

The keyboard I'm not too happy about. It feels like it promotes carpal tunnel since the top row of keys is curved upward way too much but everyone has their own opinions on keyboards so.... the mouse is nice. No complaints there although being a Linux developer and using PC hardware, I miss the mouse wheel.

I'll post up more feedback as I play with it more.

I was checking out the new iMacs at the Westfarms store today. They had 3 20" models in stock.

Overall it seems like a good computer. I never have a plan of what tests to run when I check out a new computer so I just kinda fool around with it. Definitely can't give any Snappy(tm) projections but it seemed quite capable. The screen seemed quite high quality, with a wide viewing angle both horizontally and vertically.

My mom's 17" Combo model shipped on Friday. She ordered the day of the keynote. My guess is that Apple has a huge initial batch of orders to process, and (thankfully) hasn't had problems getting them out - they just had to stagger the ship dates.

I am so jealous since I saw the pics of those who are lucky enough to have received their iMac G5 yet. What is crazy here in France is, although the new iMac has been announced here 3 weeks ago it is still impossible to find any iMac in retail non-apple stores (they even keep on selling the iMac G4 they have in stocks). I have decided in the end to order through the online applestore, iMacG5 20", basic config (I will buy separately 1 Go additional RAM since the price on applestore is almost twice as expensive as what is found elsewhere). I will keep you posted to tell how long it takes to ship a basic config to France.

Or you should've just casually slipped one under your coat on that last day...

Yep !! :o

Can't explain how Apple could have so underestimated impulsive buying from visitors to AppleExpo.
By the way, visitors and their bags were "body-searched" when leaving the expo in Paris, so no possible way to hide "huge" stuff under your coat (and actually I am really into hidding huge stuff under my coat)

This is what I've never understood about Apple Expos. If Apple had a bunch of new hardware on hand to sell specifically to Expo attendees, they'd sell out of whatever they had. I think they should install credit card readers in the back of chairs so as new products are announced, keynote attendees can buy one while the Steve is still pitching them! Talk about a sales boost! Get everyone's cash while they're still under the influence of RDF!

I've been lurking here for awhile - just thought I'd speak up to say that my 17" shipped today (512 memory, internal BT, wireless package). I'm glad it's on its way, but I have to admit that I wish I was more excited about it. When I saw the "reveal" on the Apple site I was disappointed by the design and hoped it would be prettier in person. Well, one trip to the Apple Store later and nope...still UGLY! I was not a huge fan of the dome, but at least it had a gorgeous, elegant monitor. This thing is a heavy, clunky slab - it looks like something Fred Flintstone would use. (If they could just fit one of those birds inside to chisel out the 1's and 0's!) ;)

Oh well... at least it'll be a step up from the silly dalmation iMac I'm on now. I plan on investing in some of that vinyl cling printer paper to gussy up the chin a little bit...

Ooh, you know what...the end of your post kinda made a lightbulb go off in my head.

Since the entire known universe seems to be bent on making fun of the Leno chin feature of these new iMacs (more pronounced on the 17" than the 20", but still quite large on both), I'm wondering if some company or indivudual will come up with static-cling "customization prints" to help dress up or offset that huge wide expanse? Some abstract funky art, maybe just some color panels or swoops, some graphics, etc.

Something that still lets the Apple logo show through, of course.

I realize everyone's first impulse it to laugh and tell me to shut up, but sillier things have come to be. Wasn't there a company making big inserts for the sides of G4 towers? Flames and other graphics? Yes. Then you've got that HP iPod tattoo thing going on. And I've seen companies that sell iBook panel covers and customization sleeves (and even one company who will PAINT your iBook or PowerBook).

So I don't imagine it's TOO far out of the question that some schmo could make nice rectangular self-adhesive, low-tack vinyl or plastic designs in two sizes and sell a few.

Uh oh...did I just give away the store? What some lurker read this, design them and make a million bucks by spring. I'll slit my wrists...

No, 10/11 is estimated ship date. My iMac shipped Monday (9/20) from China and arrived Thursday (9/23) to Philadelphia, PA. Only 4 days for FREE shipping, if I paid for shipping it would have taken 2 days! My ship date was before or on 10/1. That is just to save apple's butt.

You will have it the next 5 business days!!! Enjoy!

I am on my 20" iMac right now and lovin it!!!!

And why is it that every single iMac box I've seen has been absolutely beat to crap?

I've been wondering that myself. :) At least the actual unit is so thin and small that those small box violations don't get anywhere near the iMac.

Decided to go full tilt and ordered 2GB RAM from newegg.com. The standard 256MB RAM definitely slows this machine down.

Man, you're really hiding that beautiful machine. What a shame. (you're also a lucky sumbitch) :)

I'm watching my iMac make its way here from Shanghai, and can't figure out what the hell is going on.

It leaves Shanghai on the 24th, shows up in Memphis TN on the 25th, ends up in Anchorage AK later that day... then goes BACK to freakin' Shanghai? Back in Anchorage on the 26th, then Memphis, and it hits Canada this morning.

Did they forget to stick a keyboard in the box, or what? Man, people's boxes are arriving pretty beat up after just one trip... mine should be pretty FUBAR. :D

I'm happy though. It's already on its way from Winnipeg, so I should have it tomorrow. The estimated date on the FedEx page also says October 14th, which is going to be impossible, unless it sits for 15 days in a truck somewhere. There must be retards working at FedEx!

Hopefully your iMac doesn't get stuck in customs for the next 2 weeks. I've heard of people tracking their purchases to Alaska, then it sits there for days (and days and days) while customs does whatever it is they do. Of course, your iMac is going to Canadia so they probably won't hold it up at all. :)

Oh yeah, it's only hidden when I'm not using it. Which is *counts on fingers*, never! :D

Finally, my wife's (read my) 20" 1.8GHz/250GB/1GB/AX/BT KB M shipped today. Estimated delivery date is Oct 14th - sigh - let's hope everyone is right that they are conservative delivery dates.

NCMacFan

Definitely conservative - mine arrived today (9/27) when the estimated arrival date of 10/11. Still getting used to the new kid - OS 9.2 to X feels like quite a leap!

Machine is good so far - I imported video for the first time, which was fun. One design flaw I've noticed: if you are using the computer standing (while bouncing a crabby baby on your hip, say), and you tilt the display waaaay up to view it properly, the power cord hits the bottom of the circle cutout in the stand and unplugs itself. That was unpleasant. I tried really cramming it in there tightly, hopefully that'll do the trick. (Though to be honest, it still feels like a less-than-rock-solid connection. We'll see.)

OK mine Imac G5 order was CANCELLED monday.

I have ordered the 8/31 my I mac G5 with my VISA card. Two weeks later, my card was swallowed by a stupid fuel pomp. It was sunday, so nobody was here to allow me to open this damn device, in order to give me back my visa card.
The next day, I come back here, open the device, but my card was not there anymore. The bastards just said : Sorry but the pomp should have puke your card out this night, and somebody took it.
Nice ! So I was obliged to cancel my card. Knowing this, I phoned to the Apple store, and tell them this story, and how to fix it, in order that my order will not be cancelled. They give me a fax number, and tell me to send some documents.
I did what they asked, and I was very disapointed to discover that they did do nothing : my order was cancelled

Now I have to wait for an another entire month, before getting my hands on an Imac G5 :err:

Sounds like par for the course: product announced (after it seems it'll NEVER materialize), huge-ass wait ("announcing today, shipping in...") and then - after the pre AND post unveiling wait: the inevitable problems (white spots, warped lids, faulty latches, overheating, logic board issues, battery/performance glitches, noisy fans, loud drives, etc.). And now a possible issue involving "white lines" with the new iMac G5?

:err:

All too familiar. I hope it isn't so.

Still no sign of my iMac yet :( . Today is the 11th Oct. Apple order tracking sucks big time - all it says is "Order Shipped" and no information. I called Apple to find out what's up with order tracking/where is my iMac? and they said order tracking does not work properly in the UK/Rest of Europe. Instead they give the name of a 3rd party website Apecode (http://www.apecode.com/appletrack/) to track the order because it's much more accurate than their own method!

At any rate, this website does give useful info. Now I know that it left Shanghai airport on the 5th, landed on the 7th (must have some sort of RDF to stay in the air for that long ;) ) and since the 7th it's been sat at the EDC - whatever the hell that is (European Distribution Centre? Extremely Delayed Cargo depot?).

Anyway. It's not sat on my desk where it should be :( :(

Yeah, that's a real boneheaded thing to have to deal with. Let me ask a question from a real non-geeky perspective (not knowing how much these things cost and all):

Why do you suppose Apple didn't either a) make Bluetooth standard in all three iMac models, or b) since the back comes off and every other damn thing in there seems user serviceable, why couldn't an internal Bluetooth module be added after the fact?

If Apple is charging people $50 to BTO this Bluetooth module at the online Apple Store, would I be in the ballpark to assume that this is about a $4 part for Apple?

It seems to me that all they've done is a) lock people in to a "buy from our online store or else" approach and b) screw a bunch of Bluetooth-desiring customers out of the opportunity to simply walk into their local CompUSA or Apple store (where iMac G5 boxes might be stacked and waiting for purchase!) and get a Bluetooth-equipped iMac G5.

They have to go through the stupid-ass online store and hope it arrives within the next 15-80 days. Nice.

Even if Apple left it off by default, AT LEAST allowing it to be added later - as one one an AirPort card or RAM - would've been the decent thing to do.

What if someone - a talented, hard-working someone - has saved their money and, due to their youthful age or a less-than-stellar credit history, they simply do not have a credit card or a way to purchase online from Apple? What if they wanted a Bluetooth-equipped iMac G5?

Their only options are having a friend with a credit card get it for them or some other similar pain-in-the-butt arrangement, OR forget about Bluetooth altogether, and just walk into a store and get something that isn't exactly what they wanted.

:\

How is that a good, positive and healthy thing? It isn't, IMO. I think it's quite chuckleheaded, and goodness knows how many impulse iMac G5 sales they might lose at the retail stores and other retailers (once the newness/honeymoon wears off and the excitement ebbs a bit and iMac G5s are in plentiful, easy-picking supply)?

And yes, I realize you can poke that D-link thing in the back of the iMac, but it looks stupid (totally negating the whole sleek, no wires look) and you waste a USB port.

A stupid, inelegant outcome on two fronts.

rasmits
2004-10-11, 22:10
Yeah. I asked apple before I ordered online if I was able to add bluetooth later on, because my apple store had my exact model (minus bluetooth) available and on hold. They said I could add that dlink thing, but that's it. I didn't want to do that...

Everything else (HD, airport, memory, etc) can be changed by the apple store, so I just don't understand why they don't have the authority to add a bluetooth module.

Not getting bluetooth kind of defeats the purpose of the iMac. The goal is to have as few wires as possible, right? I'm not saying having a keyboard/mouse wire is bad, it's just, if I'm going to buy my first iMac I'm going to make sure it's one I am going to really be happy about, and make sure it's the exact one I was really hoping for.

This and the shipping issue... but we've all heard about that.

As far as I know, the built in BT module is soddered onto the logic board, so it's not as simple as popping open the machine and adding it. It has to be done in the factory and it must ship that way. Sorry.

Would it be impossible to design it so it was a simple plug in, like the airport? Obviously it's too late now. (until a revision or something). But I'm not complaining... A month wait is nothing considering the wonderful machine I'm going to get.

Wrong. It IS a simple plug-in module, not unlike the AirPort card. Apple simply chooses not to make the part available as a retail add-on. Maybe it's so they can encourage CTO sales online. It reminds me of when the first PowerMac G3 came out - you could only get an internal ZIP by ordering directly from Apple, the internal ZIP kit was not available to dealers.

Apple Store employees are not real happy about it, either...

I understand that. Then re-design that approach, OR just make the damn thing standard, across the board on all three iMac G5s. That would be the easiest, most sensible thing.

That's just a small, quibbledicky thing for Apple to be doing.

They should be PUSHING the whole Bluetooth thing, right? As it stands, no one who buys their iMac in a retail store gets that experience, without adding the D-link thing.

I don't know ANYONE who's happy about it, FFL. :(

Here's hoping that this particular issue is something addressed in Rev. B sometime in the first half of 2005.

That must be the most aggravating feeling in the world: you wanted Bluetooth on your 20" iMac G5, so you ordered online and you're looking at a 28-day wait. BUT, you're standing in your local Apple Store, and there are boxes of 20" iMac G5s on the floor, waiting to be bought.

A stupid, petty move, no matter what anyone says.

This is also a reason why you must order bluetooth combo from Apple only. Apple removes the wired keyboard/mouse combo if you order the wireless bundle from them. Personally I'd want a wired keyboard for backup/troubleshooting purposes.

I wanted bluetooth but not bad enough to do the whole online ordering + wait thing so here I am with a wired keyboard/mouse on my new iMac. If bluetooth had been an in-store option Apple would've made more money from me. Even more so because I would've bought the bluetooth module & keyboard, but not the combo because I'd still want the wired keyboard for backup + I hate one-button mice.

Oh well, I spent that cash on 2GB RAM (330 shipped) and that has made me a much happier camper then I would've been with a wireless keyboard and a slow, chuggy, RAM starved iMac.

talk about aggravating.

my apple retailer called me the other day to say my 20-inch imac is ready for pick-up -- FINALLY! -- only to tell me when i went there last night that the bluetooth module is not installed for some unknown reason, and that they will just send someone to my home to install it when it's ready. so after testing the machine, we put it back in the box, i went out to hail a cab, and along comes one of their guys saying that they do have bluetooth in store. but since their store is closing, and they need at least "two hours" to install the bluetooth module, they asked to leave my imac again overnight, and pick it up again the next day.

i asked why can't they just give me the part so i can install bluetooth myself. i thought i could just pop it in like they showed me with the airport card. apparently it's not that easy, something about antenna and making sure it's properly installed so it can send/receive data without obstruction.

i thought i can handle another day after waiting nearly a month for it. but just because i'm patient :| doesn't mean i'm not fuming mad!

At last!!! My iMac arrived today!!! And it's Huuuuge! I had no idea how big the 20" would look. My 17" iMac G4 looks like a postage stamp in comparison :D

BUT..... Either I've got a faulty one or the "whisper quiet" operation is only quiet when compared to a jet engine!!! It's way louder than my iMac G4 and it's blowing an absolute gale out of the ventilation slot at the back of the machine.

When it's first switched on you can hear a fan spool up, then as OSX loads (at the Desktop-appearing stage) the fan ramps up even more. Then it slows down again. After 10 mins it's ramped up again and is very noisy (ie louder than the G4 iMac). When I ramp up the processor performance to Maximum, after a few more minutes you can tell the fans are running at full whack.

Am I being picky or is the "whisper quiet operation" just a bunch of marketing Bull? (OR have I got a faulty and very noisy fan in there?)

Prima facie, it does sound like bad RAM.

How many chimes do you get? Are you getting the normal sound?

You might want to:
-try booting off the Apple Hardware Test CD and running the diagnostics;
-check that the RAM is properly seated.

Depends on what "whisper quiet operation" means to you. I can't hear my 20" iMac if anything else is going on in the room. Everything has to be off (other than the iMac ;) ) in order for me to hear it. My only complaint is when I do hear the fan, it's at a completely annoying, headache-inducing pitch. So, I tend to have something else on in the room so I don't have to listen to it.

fedex will redeliver tomorrow.  :o

You know, if you call Fedex you can go pick it up today-ay-ay-ay! :D

That's how I usually end up getting things from Fedex, they come while I'm at work and I take a trip up to the airport after work to get my goodies. :)

Paul: What pscates said. We want pictures!

I was going to make fun of your lousy roommates who can't get their asses out of bed to open the door for the FedEx man, but thankfully he made a second attempt.

ALRIGHT! Finally my freaking imac has shipped, after 4 freaking weeks. :D

Anyone know how long it takes once shipped?

Shanghai to San Francisco? Regular shipping, the free one.

I am just curious if I might have it by the end of this week, or the beginning of the next...

Anyone with similar experience?

TIA. :smokey:

Mine took about 5 or 6 days, for free shipping. It shouldn't take long. Look on FedEx tracking, the estimated delivery date is almost always right, I've never had it be wrong for me.

How come, for last week and today at least, the shipping time for the iMac 20" is 3-5 business days in the USA and 2-3 weeks in the UK and Germany?

Don't they all come from the same place in China?!!
