View Full Version : G4 Dual800 to Intel MacMini 1.66 - good move?

Is this a good move?

From:
Power Mac G4 Quicksilver Dual 800
w/GeForce2 TwinView - 64 MB VRAM
1.25GB ram

To:
Mac mini Intel Core Duo 1.66Ghz
w/ Intel GMA950 graphics
2GB Ram

Question one - CPU performance
I want to use the mini to work primarily with Photoshop and although I know PS will be slow (relatively speaking) until the Universal version of PS is released, will it still have a considerable jump in speed compared to a Dual 800Mhz G4?

Question two - GPU performance
How will the mini's 64MB integrated GPU stack up to the G4's 64MB GeForce card?

Bonus question
I currently use two displays with monitor spanning. I have heard that the Mini can support spanning with a USB display adapter for the second display. Is this true and how is the performance?
(probably the wrong thread for the bonus question so any info would be helpful).

ps - I know that one of the new Mac Pro machines (or even an iMac for that mater) is better suited to Photoshop work but I am trying save $$$ and maintain a dual monitor setup and I was wondering if this would work. ;)

Thanks Mucho! :) :) :)

I'd keep the PowerMac, and save the $$$.

...and one more thing! (since we missed one yesterday)

Not to make this more confusing but -
I also want to run Parallels which requires an Intel proc.
I'm using VPC now but it's very slow!
Can I assume that Parallels under Intel is faster than VPC on a Quicksilver?
