Can you burn CDs with the crossfade effect between songs on somehow? It sounds so smooth that way...

Nope, not without using a third party program to actually overlap the audio in the track files. Even then, you can't burn "seamless" tracks that don't have a little hiccup of a pause between them.

are these all tracks off one CD you're trying to do, to get seamless applause in live performanes, or are these just a variety of tracks mixed together?

There is an option under burning in the preferences window where you can adjust the gap between songs, and there is an option for none. It doesn't crossfade but it might eliminate some of the pause.

If you have Garageband it's dead easy to build the overlap & Export direct to iTunes... but as others have said, this will become 1 track, not 2.

Or just use Roxio Jam, which was made specifically to do CD mastering.

Another method is to record your iTunes output (including crossfades) to a new file using Audio Hijack Pro and then burn that file to CD. I put up a short discussion of the various methods at my music mix site, spacebeats.net (http://www.spacebeats.net/submit.html)
