I need some help understanding a major software purchase. I currently have FCE 2 and use it a lot for filming football and editing tapes (I am a coach.) I use it on a QUAD (hence, no intel chips.) I am planning to buy a HD camcorder this week as my old one broke last weekend, and quite frankly, I need the resolution of HD to really see what is going on on the field.

Hence, I want to get FCE HD but now that I just bought a new iMac last weekend for the kids, I now confused on software issues: are there native Intel software that run better on these platforms and non-Intel native software to run on the Power PC platforms like my Quad? Or is everythng the same?

I would hate to pay for something like FCE HD for the Quad and then later convert to Intel based system and have to re-buy the software.

Or do I have it all wrong? I know I should know this but quite frankly I am very confused.

Now Universal, Final Cut Express HD 3.5, LiveType 2, and Soundtrack 1.5 all run natively on both PowerPC-based and Intel-based Macintosh computers.

That's What UB (Universal Binary's) are for, so you can use the same app on both intel and ppc.

I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to steal part of this thread now that the question was answered and I have one that's kind of related. Do you guys consider FCE safe to buy now or do you think there might be an update in the near future, like January or so?

Thanks,
Chris

Go by mactimeline (http://www.mactimeline.com/). As you can see, FCE usually gets updated during MWSF in January, but this time, it wasn't.

Ehh, I kind of said the heck with it and bought FCE for $100 through my university. I would have waited if I didn't want to use it for a film production class I'm in. Thanks again for the help though.
