View Full Version : airport cards work with other base stations?
If I add the original 802.11b airport card to my old emac, I should have no problem seeing my Linksys 802.11 a/b router, right?
Yup, you should have no problems at all. The AirPort card in my PowerBook works with all sorts of Netgear, Linksys, and other generic wireless hubs and routers.
I'd say it works better! At least for range that is.
Figures, I get the original Airport card for my 700Mhz eMac. Plug it in, go to Airport Setup. Go to join my existing Linksys wireless network and my Linksys router in not found. My status in Sys Prefs -> Network is YELLOW for the airport card.
Also, when using Applications -> Internet Connect my Linksys router pops up for a second and goes down. Same when I toggle the Airport card ON/OFF in the Airport menu icon it shows my Linksys router for a second.
Has anyone experienced this? Or do you have suggestions? Please help me. (the wireless router has no special config, just the default settings and my dad's wintel box sees it fine)

does it matter how close/far you are from the basestation?
i tried it both in a different room, and then right on top of it. no difference.

If your router is broadcasting the SSID (neat little router name you give it) and there is no WEP key set up then your router is wide open and your Airport card should not have any trouble seeing (wouldn't suggest keeping it this way). Make sure the card is seated good and the antenna is secure to it.
