From parts, to promotion, and everything in between, how much money does it cost Apple to manufacture and sell an iPod???

Does anyone know, is all of that information public?

Portal Player has to be licensed, the interface has to have some sort of claims to it, etc. What are the hidden costs associated with making a device mass marketed, like the iPod. The retail price of an iPod is $249 for the least expensive model, how much does Apple actually keep?

I think it'd be interesting to know these details, then compare them to the 4¢ per song that Apple gets from its sold tracks on iTunes.

Anyone out there know some of or all of these answers?

The only numbers you'll get are gross margins on a product. Gross margins are only public if Apple discloses it in a SEC filing or through its quarterly financial conference call.

From MacMinute's conference call notes for Q2 2004, it has the following numbers:
http://macminute.com/2004/04/14/conferencecall/

iPod gross margin was 23%
iPod mini gross margin 20%

I'd guess that they currently hover around 20%, which is considerably lower than their overall gross margin of ~26-27%. Figure out the cost from there.
