Kraetos' discussion of Joomla! (http://joomla.org) made me begin to wonder at the state of opensource Content Management Solutions (CMS) available today, and which ones are more highly regarded. While cleaning out my bookmarks I ran across SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org/) and decided to drop back in here and ask you fine folks to post some CMS apps that have caught your eyes over the last little while.

So what do you like?

Do YOU operate or HAVE you operated a CMS recently?
What makes a CMS "good"?
Which ones are regarded as having higher security?
What are warning signs about a CMS' safety/stability?
What questions am I leaving out about CMS?

I operate CMS's every day at work :), except we design & code them ourselves rather than use third-party software, its just so much easier to integrate within the websites we build.

What makes a CMS? Extreme attention to detail when working on User Interface Design :) Theres nothing worse than a CMS thats impossible to figure out how to use. In my experience, people don't pay any attention to the advanced features of a CMS, they simply want to login, get a job done and then logout again. Providing you make that process as simple, easy and fast as possible you should have a good CMS.

Code wise its really a case of refining & perfecting your code along the way, i've built a few CMS's now and each one I have found out I can remove 20-30 lines of code in most files, and even some entire files because it just isn't necessary.

Cool!
Any stand-out off-the-shelf solutions that might appeal to a group who aren't prepared to code their own?

I've only ever designed & developed CMS's before i'm afraid, never used a pre-built one before :(
