I haven't seen an iBook thread in the Spec and Rumors forum in a while, so here's a new one.

This from MacInTouch (http://www.macintouch.com) (October 15, 2004, edition):

(12:30 EDT) Stefan Wunner, editor of the German-language MacGadget (http://www.macgadget.de/) website, emailed us about new iBooks said to be set for a debut next week:

Apple is going to introduce a revised iBook G4 product line next Tuesday. Besides the usual hardware improvements (speed bumps) there will be price reductions for at least one model. The new iBooks G4 are expected to ship next week to resellers and distributors.

Very good if it happens. I guess they will drop the price of the high end 14" ibook since it is to close to the pbook and just spend $100 more and get a better machine. But, that will intrude on the low end 14" ibook so I guess they will lower all ibook prices. But, I will remain skeptical in till TS reports it.

A speedbump is a given in any revision.
But I'd actually like to see a slightly thinner iBook in a new "pearl metallic" white colour. You could say it's the iBook "growing up". :)

I want to see the low end go to $999. They raised it to $1099 with the introduction of the G4, but it should go back down again.

Here's a question...is it out of the realm of possibility that we could have a top end 15" iBook?..(yes, iBook)

I know that infringes on PB territory, but perhaps they will in turn be bumped to 1.8 GHz (?) and of course G5, at some point. A lower entry iBook model could then be 13.3" in size.
:)

I only question if it might not be a bad idea to go 15". Many PC laptops are now equipped with 15" widescreens and better resolutions such as this one (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&dept=0&WLBS=FSWEB57&sku_id=0926INGFS10046337&catid=20354&newdeptid=20352)from Compaq.

cough http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0410briefly.html cough. No new pbooks. An unconfirmed source says top speed is 1.3 Ghz. Different latches as well to show the difference between predecessors.

Ooh, a 100MHz bump (1.2 > 1.3)? That's iMac DV-level upgrades!

I don't care. If that 12" gets dropped to $999, that's going to be WAY too tempting to get that, a SuperDrive iMac G5 (17" vs. 20" still undecided) and sell this PowerBook!

Didn't look that impressive based on their rumoured specs. Speed bump only.
No news on GPU bump for Tiger Core support, HD, included wifi, or pricing.

I have a friend who bought an iBook a week ago and received it on Thursday, does she have any chance on a price rebate or anything with the new, lower coast models coming out? I know Apple used to have some sorta deal with this situation but I can't remember how it worked or when the cut off was. Any suggestions?

Something's not right here. The high end model doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. Seems like it only gains 130 mhz for the same price. Meanwhile the mid and low end models gain a whopping 330 and 200 mhz respectively for the same or lower price. The mid also get airport extreme thrown in.

and a superdrive........

....which is currently a $200 option on the high end. Sounds like a deal to me....

30 GB on the low end sucks. The rest is fine... although a 133 MHz boost is really nothing as far as actual performance is concerned, it would take a huge upgrade in MHz to actually show a real-world improvement (i.e., 1.0-1.5 GHz).

But the iBooks have been stuck with a 30 GB hard drive on the low end for over a year. They should really upgrade it to 40/60/60. Maybe have an 80 GB, 4200 RPM option as well. 5400 RPM won't be an option for quite a while on iBooks.

Oh yeah, I really hope they have more than 32 MB of VRAM. Going from 32 MB (which was pretty cool in 1999) to 64 MB (which is now mainstream for budget laptops, low-end for everything else) will make a big difference in OS X's graphical goodies.

Having Airport Extreme standard on all models would kick ass. Most PC makers require you to buy an ugly PC card for wireless access on their lowest-end models. Internal, built-in wireless access as standard equipment even on the low-end model would be sweet. So would a Superdrive option on the 12" (hint hint).

What would be really ace would be an iPod with a colour screen that starts up everytime with Bono's face on it... animated even and it sings a little bit of Zooropa or something as a start-up chime!!!

not! ;)

UK Store back up. New iBooks and the SINGLE 1.8GHz G5 confirmed. Go look :D 1.8Ghz G5 looks clearly designed to inhabit the space left by the old G4 to me.

Now that the updated iBooks are indeed here (kinda... it's really more of a price drop than an "update"), you should probably just take discussion to the Apple Products forum.
