At the moment I try to have all my bookmarks in the Bookmarks Bar under general titles... like in the "News" bookmark is "Serious" and "Funny" and under "Funny" is "The Onion" and so on...

Some other examples of the hierarchical menus that I use in the Bookmarks bar are Shopping>Music>Amazon and Mac>Freeware>OmniOutliner. .org has its own Bookmark Bar menu that I use to 'Open in Tabs'.

The problem is, is that this is a really intricate and involving system and sometimes I can't be bothered to put bookmarks in the right place, leading to the inevitable backlog clear-out that takes aaaaaages.

I was wondering how other people arranged their bookmarks and if anyone has devised an anywhere-near efficient system.

Thanks :)

I don't think The onion falls under funny more satirical, guess it's that american humour thing :p

I personally put all mine under the bookmarks menu, Just one handy click away.

it would be nice if Safari offered more options for updating/checking bookmarks.

one of the old Netscape versions (maybe still does) used to scan them for you and flag updated pages, mark 404 for easy pruning, etc.
took ages to check the thousand or so archived links I used at the time,
but it was useful functionality that I'm starting to miss.

there are some bookmark utilities on versiontracker, but I haven't tried any.

anybody have a preferred tool (ideally with a prefpane like pithhelmet)?
