My Epson C86 crapped out on me finally and I need another printer for my network. I don't care about photo quality, though my documents need to look good. The printer will be connected to a Linksys PSUS4 (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115416837650&packedargs=page%3DL_Product_C2%26random%3Dnull%26s ku%3D1115416837650&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=3765028788B01) on my network. Because of this it can't have any features other than printing. B/W predominantly, though I'm sure some color printing will occur.

I had looked at Lexmark, but I hear they are horrible. Every other thing I have seen out there is really feature laden. I'm not opposed to any one brand nor am I favoring a particular brand. I just don't want to have to pay more for ink every month than I paid for the printer.

So what's a good model I should consider?

I recommend the Brother 2070n laser printer (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828113165). It is BW only.
I have had one for a year now and it is fantastic.
You can quite often find one for less than $100.

The big old HP 4xxx series printers are also great, but you would have to get a used one.

Seconded on the Brother rec. It's a great printer. It's not a photo printer but it's perfect for documents. And it's networked, not USB if that matters any.

That does look like a nice printer. Toner doesn't seem outrageous either. I love the ethernet ability. I would get rid of my personal PSUS4 in favor of a network printer. Great input, Thanks!

Any other ideas out there?

Edit: Thanks for the second torifile.

Also, I found it on Amazon for just under $100, $140 if I add a second toner cartridge to it.

A few months back, Staples had it for like $80. I was able to pick one up on craigslist for $60. But even at $100, I'd get it. I'm thinking of picking one up for our home office (the one I've got is in my office office) and getting rid of the Win 2k box we just use a print server for an old laserjet we've had for years.

But beware of the ink prices. For example a colour ink-jet with all colours in one cartridge is usually a bad sign.

I've recommended Brother lasers to several clients and all were happy with the price, and very happy with the printer.

Well, it would seem that Brother's laser is where I need to focus then. Thanks for the input everyone.

If others have anything different please feel free to let me know. :)

Good deal, but it's not networked which is a huge plus for the 2070n.

Unless colour is absolutely necessary I would suggest going B&W laser... Inkjets can be very dodgy, have a much worse quality than laser and chew through ink like crazy (especially if you cheap out).

We got a Canon LBP3000 (B&W laser). They were getting the best reviews at the time. It's been going great although for some reason we can't get it to install in any language other than Polish... (grrr Windows)

The only other problem is that it doesn't do double-sided, which gets annoying when you need to print out a shite-load of documents. Have a good think about looking for a double-sided printer, it will save on paper - cheaper, better for the environment, and easier to manage! My poor little stapler can't manage half the stuff I print out :(.
