View Full Version : Wireless Router Recommendations?

I have had it with my AirPort Extreme N router. Slow performance on the AirPort Disk to not being able to configure OpenDNS, plus I hate the AirPort Utility -- I much prefer web interfaces.

Anyway, I am going to eBay it and pick something else up. Can anyone recommend anything else?

Seconded. WRT54G unless you need .11n.

NETGEAR WNR854T (http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/RangeMaxNEXTWirelessRoutersandGateways/WNR854T.aspx)

I've had this router for several months now, and it has performed well in every respect. I have two Macs wired to it at all times, and a third machine, my MB, is either wired or wireless at any given time.

Good luck with your purchase. :)

Now you're just confusing him. :p

I'll help, Buffalo routers are very nice. :)

Wrt54g

Wacky. I just dumped one of these in favor of an Extreme. It was flaky, it had to be rebooted at least once (and usually 2-3 times) a day recently, and it never really felt... right. It finally up and completely died the day after we left on a trip for a week, taking down our mail server while we were gone. :p

OTOH, it did last almost 4 years, and it only became truly obnoxious in the past six months before dying completely.

Did you update the firmware?

Ayup. Like clockwork, always up to date.

Unit simply failed.

Thanks all, I purchased this one from Newegg:

I play on using dd-wrt with it. I have in the past with other routers and loved it.

Well Linksys routers almost always go comatose after extended uptime, requiring a power-cycle...at least from my experience with 3 WRT54GSes and a WET11. But if you have to buy one on the cheap, there's nothing better than the WRT54GL.

I did the same as Kickaha...rather than going with a 3rd party firmware compatible Draft N router, I just went with Apple's this time. It's the first reasonably good AirPort router...I've had every single revision of the UFO and ended up hating them all.

Got it today, unpacked it and had dd-wrt up and running in less than 30 minutes. It took considerably longer to get all my settings in, because dd-wrt kept on not giving me web access to the router config after some reboots, but i've got it all in now after an hour of fiddling.

It's nice to be back to dd-wrt.

PS - does the antenna boost feature actually work? I remember trying it on my last linksys and there seemed to be no difference between the stock 28 mW and the recommended limit of 70 mW (even though you can crank it up to 250 or something I believe)

It sure does. Just know that the router isn't made to handle overclocking stock. You'll need to get a video card fan on the CPU in that thing to keep it from frying.

Actually, he's not overclocking the CPU. :p

Details, details. He gets the idea. Why not post a pic and a how-to for him? Maybe you'll even get a cookie for sharing.

Anybody know where I can get a power cable for a WRT54G? My roommate lost his and this it is either find a power cable or buy a new router. Thanks in advance for any help.

You should be able to get one from Radio Shack, but it'll cost as much as a new WRT54G. :\

Or if you happen to have at most, two adaptor, one with right plugging end, another with right voltage rating and current rating at least same or more (but not less!), you can snip, snip, splice the plug and adaptor and voila! your homemade adaptor for the router! :D
