View Full Version : How to Blow Some Money

So my girlfriend and I just broke up (she's actually a member on here... if you see this, just move along). I want to buy something fairly expensive, with lots of silicon, liquid crystals, and shininess.

I was thinking of spending $300-$500 or so, or maybe more. iPhone is the obvious option, but requires a switch to AT&T. I'd entertain the thought of an unlocked cell phone for my current T-Mobile subscription, though.

Help me buy away my sorrows.

iPhone. AT&T sucks, but other phones suck more.

If you're not down for an iPhone, I just bought a Nintendo DS lite which I love to pieces. Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros are just super. If you're looking to release some anger, I recommend getting an Xbox 360 (Elite, of course. Go big or go home) and Gears of War - and soon enough, Halo 3.

And also for what its worth, I think my ex is lurking around AppleNova too. :p Not sure if she knows I'm Kraetos, but it's not like it's hard to figure it out. And when we ended, well, thats when I bought my Xbox and Gears of War. So I can vouch for its effectiveness.

iPhone. It's worth it.

I'm on contract. Plus, she actually bought me one on launch day. A birthday/last christmas/next christmas gift. We parted on fairly friendly (as friendly as any breakup can be) terms, but she wanted it back. I can't blame her.

I'd rather get something with less memories.

Thanks, Kraetos. I'm not really angry, just depressed. And I don't have a TV, lol.

I kind of like the Nokia N800... I loved the iPhone's wi-fi and web browsing. But I'd also like to have a media player. I know I'm asking for the phoneless iPhone, but does another company make such a device? An Archos with wi-fi, with decent Mac support?

Edit: Found it. Archos 605.

Edit 2: Damn. Not out 'til September 1.

And soon, like this week I think, a price cut is in the works. That can't hurt. Though I guess not having a TV might be a problem.

Buy 5 stocks of Apple. Let them sit for several years depending on age. Buy future girlfriend nice engagement ring with profits earned from stock. That will really spite the current ex.

Hey man, I've been surviving with a 12" RCA TV for the last year... if you sit really close you can almost tell what game you are playing. :p

I got fed up with Apple not having a 12" machine so went out to our local computer graveyard in BKK and bought a little Panasonic Toughbook CF-R1 maxed out with RAM and Wifi. I need something I can almost stuff in my pocket, that is WiFi and has a keyboard... besides I love buying old machines and playing with them.

Over here it cost me about US$300 which is expensive by real world standards, but even at that price I have never had so much fun with a tiny machine. And US$300 is nothing for anything that can do all this can! I am getting into trouble with my wife for taking it to bed with us!

Well, there are only, what, four females at AppleNova? :p Besides Windswept, that leaves crazychester, Oompa Loompa, and probably someone else I'm forgetting.

For what it's worth, I'd also recommend a TV, a Wii, and a couple of games. :)

Like you breaking up and asking for an engagement ring back... but that's another topic entirely. Indian givers. :/

I don't understand why anyone would be surprised if they were asked to return an engagement ring if the engagement was ended. It's a symbol of a man's love to a woman (or at least DeBeers wants you to believe this) and if they break up, why shouldn't the man get the ring back and why would the woman want to keep it? Courts in the US have forced women to return engagement rings when the engagement was terminated so I guess some people think this is OK.

cosus
2007-08-03, 14:51
Well, I meant the man breaking off the engagement and asking for the ring back.

Kickaha
2007-08-03, 14:54
I've seen people not return wedding gifts when the wedding's been called off, too. Rude. As. Hell.

Hell, I've seen the *girl* break off the engagement, and refuse to give back the ring. Then do it again. Golddigger much?

If the woman breaks off the engagement, the ring should be returned, no doubt about it. If the man breaks off the engagement, most people think it should be returned, some people think it should be kept as some sort of financial restitution, I guess.

So basically, the woman is willing to exchange marriage for money. Kinda makes you wonder. It was more honest when it was a simple dowry purchase from the family, huh? :\

I've never understood why someone would want to hold onto an emotionally charged bauble that simply serves to remind them of the person who broke their heart, anyway, unless it's out of sheer spite. (Don't get me wrong, I grok spite just fine - I just don't see the need to continually remind yourself of the pain as well.)

2007-08-03, 14:55
Anyway... Samsung U600!

I think they have a word for that. It's called dowry.

Windswept
2007-08-03, 15:10
...if they break up, why shouldn't the man get the ring back...
I completely agree with you. An engagement ring is *not* in the category of an ordinary 'gift'. It is a symbol of a promise. It's also usually outrageously expensive, and not even remotely in the 'normal' gift-expense ballpark.

When the 'promise of marriage' is no longer in effect, the ring should go back to the person who paid for it.

I think women who keep the ring as a *gift* are pretty disgusting, to be honest. If it cost $100, no problem. But when we're talking thousands of dollars, no way should she keep it.

IIRC, I think someone said the UK law was that the woman keeps the ring. I think that is so wrong, no matter what the law is. That law should be changed.

Any woman who keeps an expensive engagement ring given by a guy of modest means is a greedy, disgusting bitch. The only saving grace would be that he'd be lucky to be rid of her, even at that price.

Yeh, seriously get a Nokia N800. They finally have proper AIM support thanks to Gizmo project (I *really* want to buy one again), and they're much more capable than the iPhone. Gmail works, the email client is better, and the browser has proper flash support. Plus, the 800x480 screen is gorgeous... it's really a wonderful machine.

Buy a guitar and an amp. Teach yourself to play or buy some software to help you learn. I know Hal Leonard makes some decent software for such a purpose. IIRC, it even syncs you with Garageband to play along with songs. Cool stuff. Then again, if you have no interest in learning how to play an instrument, go for the TV. :P
