Ok so here we are... with WWDC just around the bend and tiger about to poke its head, the question that hunts me is...
When will the next iBook bump be?
The reason: I am half way through getting my CCNA. I have not done a test and reserved below 85% (and that was just one text, the rest are 91.5%+). I will be starting down the road to an A+ cert mid summer. And after that I also plan on getting Linux+, Server+, and maybe CCIE.
Anyway, I will require a notebook for this crazy cert fest... and an iBook would fit my needs.
So I have started this thread to get your opinion on just when the next bump will be.
I will be getting the iBook sometime this summer but I hope a bump to the line will happen before my purchase.
Now for the prize!
If you guess the winning date (or are the closest to the winning date) I will send you a bottle of Canadian maple syrup.
You may only guess one day. And only one guess per-person.
If you guess twice, you fail, no prize for you.
If you edit your post, you also fail, no guess changing.
If two people guess the same date or are the same amount of days from the winning day. They will battle to the death for the prize... errr... well I will just send out two small bottles.

You never can tell. Might be five months, might be eleven. :(
Probably be a 1.33 or 1.5GHz G4, hard drive bump, at most. As for "getting one this summer and hoping they'll be bumped", don't be silly. They JUST got revved less than a month ago. I don't think Apple is going to update them again in 3-4 months.
Get one now and be done with it.

Early January '05. Like pscates2.0 said, they were just bumped less than a month ago, that was for all the back to school stuff (yes, back to school already) they won't be bumped again till January of '05 during the Mac event that month. I don't have an exact date though, gotta find out which event it is and when it's held, cause I forgot. I'll post back later with my exact date.
Either that, or early December for all those Christmas lists. Only time will tell, like I said, gime a while and I'll post back with my prediction.
Oh, buy it now, it's an awesome deal. Don't wait, cause it's gonna be a long time till those guys are bumped again.

If I had to get a laptop right now, and it was for light/normal usage, I'd get the new, updated 12" iBook, hands down. Perfect size, kinda cute, all the ports and doodads needed by a modern iPerson.
Good price too!
Was so glad to see them get a G4 last year. Now they don't feel the abandoned, neglected stepchild, left to tackle OS X and the iLife apps with a less-than-ideal G3.
Threre isn't a sucky laptop in Apple's line-up right now, IMO. Something for everyone, it seems: from the poorest student with the most modest of needs all the way to full-tilt, on-the-go digital video monkey...and all points in between.
I don't know why people are saying you should buy it now... that's a lot like saying you should wait until the next update. Certainly don't wait until they're updated (I'll guess sometime in November, make it November 16th), but don't buy before you need it either. Well, maybe a little before you need it to get it set up just how you want it. But why get it now when you can get it later and have the warranty last longer? Plus you might be able to get a refurb for a lot less if you wait a bit. Then again, maybe you just want a new one. Either way, it's a better idea to buy when you need it. Not immediately, and not waiting forever until they're updated either.
EDIT: Please don't disqualify me \/\/ickes! I'm editing my post right now so it says November 16th, a Tuesday, instead of the 15th, a Monday. Just looked at the calendar wrong.

Good luck with your CCNA, the test itself is a bitch, but I made it. I also have my A+, trust me you could go in with your eyes shut and pass, it's really easy.

And thanks. I am more geared toward the A+ cert. I don't want to be a network tech, but the class was free, and I can't say no to a free cert.

I need an exact date. You can't just say MWSF. . . I need an exact date and if that exact date has been guessed by someone else and you win then your prize will not be as big (smaller bottle) then if you win by yourself.

Actually, if it does cary the iBook name. . . then it does not count.
Then contest is for the next iBook "bump", not the next iBook incarnation.
I used the term "bump" to try and convey a spec update. . . more memory, faster G4, but no major design/cosmedic changes to the model.
As I said. . . the person who guesses the next "bump" to the current iBook line will win.
Reread the first post if you are not clear.
So if the iBook line stays the same but is slightly faster, then the closest person gets the syrup? But if it's given a major update, no one does? That doesn't seem to make sense. Yeah, you were asking about when the next bump will be, but how can anyone know whether the next update will be a minor or a major one?
If they axe the current iBook line and replace them with the iBook tablet. . . then that date does not count. Like I said, I was asking for guesses for the next "bump". However, that does not mean that the contest is over. . . it will go on till the next 'bump' in the line. . . weather that happens to the tablet line or the current G4 line.
And don't worry, I'll consider giving everyone who guessed another try if Apple releases a tablet and axes the G4. . .
Which won't happen. . . If they release a tablet iBook, then I can see the current iBook getting a bump around the same time. . . they will not axe the line.

The iBooks are going to 1.25 low end and 1.5 high end + it will be blue tooth ready.
The speeds make sense. But they're already bluetooth ready. And when do you think they'll be updated? That's what this thread is about.

Anyone else notice how bad that would cut into the PB sales? Give me a PB speedbump, than the iBooks can have those speeds. Yes, the speeds make sense, but not until the PB gets bumped again.

You make a good point. . . however, even if they are "old school", they are not very active within this site. As I said. . . I don't feel right giving away free stuff to non-active or new members. And non-active includes people who have been members for quite a bit, but don't post here very often. We have been around for long enough that 100 posts is not that much to ask. . .
I understand how you view the new rule to be 'unfair'. . . but I feel that my logic in the new rule is valid.

Weird. I didn't think that editing someone's post as a moderator would remove their ability to edit it. Now, I did ask him to PM me or post on this thread when he has broken 100 posts. So I know when to add his guess to the mix. Which he did not.
On one side he has broken 100 posts and has been active in our community, on the other he did not post back or PM me so I could not add his guess to the thread-starting post apon 100 post breakage.
The evil side of me wants to axe him on the technicality. . . and the good side of me wants to fuck him over too... (yah, I'm an asshole.;)) hehe... But in the end, I will allow his guess to be counted. Thus, scratt is the winner.
