Questions about website

The website I am building is for a school club, which I am the Webmaster. Right now I am making a news column for my website and I was thinking of ways to make it so you could easily see what the date was. I was thinking about doing it a certain way but then I came across another website that I think did it better:

Their date was boxy, but I just tried to implement it in my website with my own code. I was wondering what everybody thought?

Your method would be better if there where multiply items from one day, as they can all then go into the 'box'. Also, the 1st one might look a little 'messy' if the news items where longer then two lines?
