I read the "be all and end all" thread and my head is still spinning. I'd like a new display. I'll use it mostly to do coding and web design. I want to keep the price under $500 if possible. Display size doesn't really matter as long as it's at least 1680x1050. 1920 would be nice, but it's probably out of my price range. I've been looking at a couple Samsung monitors (the 226 or 216). The 226BW with the "S" panel appears to be fantastic but it's much more expensive than the 216 and it comes with an "A" panel that has gotten mediocre reviews. I can't find any reviews on the 216. Any suggestions?

When do you need it by? I would suggest waiting till CES because thats when everybody usually either releases new displays or announces them for the upcoming year. My preferred display companies are Samsung, Dell, LG, and BenQ. Oh yea, if you go to Dell's website they sometimes have deals where the 2407WFP-HC display goes down to about $570, which is just over $500 but it would be worth it.

There's no real rush, but I prefer to have it sooner than wait 2 months. When is CES? I'd hit the Black Friday sales, but I'm going to be in BFE on Thanksgiving and I'm flying there so I won't be able to bring a display back.

Thanks. I've been eyeing that one. They've got it at Costco - my favorite place to shop - for $449, but I can't find any thorough reviews on it.

I have an almost identical display to the original one you mentioned; it's a Samsung 225MW (http://www.samsung.com/uk/products/monitors/lcd/lcdtvmonitors/ls22crasbedc.asp). I think it's the same display, but with a TV tuner and European video sockets.

I've been pretty pleased with it, but I never really did any comparisons before buying it. I've only had it two months, but I guess I'd recommend it. The sheer number of inputs is amazing: HDMI, DVI, RF, SCART, composite, component, S-Video, and VGA. I'd like another HDMI though.

Thats actually my other monitor. The one on my gaming rig. Great color, black blacks, but the gamma shifting is pretty rough. To get accurate color you have to turn down the brightness, but then the whites turn grey.

it uses a TN panel though. CES is the week before Macworld.

Here's users' reviews from newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001234&Tpk=245BW).

[edit]Here's a list of all the 24 inch monitors at newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010190020+1309821328&name=24%22).

if you dont want to spend a whole lot i picked up a 22inch acer 1650 x 1080 for about 240 or so, if you get it at staples there are 30 dollar off coupons on ebay for about a dollar. or if you have the physical coupon you can go to circuit city or best buy and they will match it for purchases. i got mine at circuit city it was cheaper and i still used the coupon

Just get a monitor made by one of these companies. Sony, Samsung, LG, NEC, Hitachi and you will be good as these companies make their own parts for their electronics.

Because only companies who use their own parts make good products?

And she shops at Costco... the irony continues! You never did answer whether you were slated for collegiate environs or not. ;)
