Simulating a WAN connection?

Does anyone know of a good way to simulate a WAN connection? I looked at dummynet but it sounds like a major pain in butt to get it up and running.

For what purpose, if I may ask?

To test how well my front-end client will perform across WAN. The database server isn't up just yet and I don't want to wait a month only to find that I should have optimize here and there and delay the time to market.

So, what exactly is it you want to simulate? High latency? Low bandwidth? Unpredictable disconnects? All of the three?
