Thunderbird 1.0 is Mozilla’s next generation e-mail client. Thunderbird makes emailing safer, faster, and easier than ever before with the industry’s best implementations of features such as intelligent spam filters, saved search folders, builtin RSS support, privacy protection and much more. Geez, I'd never even heard that Mozilla was working on this thing. :\

I've been playing with it for an hour now, and I have to say it's pretty damn slick.

Check it out! (http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/)

Where have you been all this time? ;)

It's been my e-mail client on Windows for a long time now. I still use Mail.app on the Mac though... no reason to use Thunderbird.

Just an FYI, their other pet project right now is Sunbird, the calendar component. It's extremely early in development though, and looks like ass.

I'm personally not a fan of mail.app, though I use it since thunderbird hasn't handled my many multiple email accounts well in the past. I hear that has changed, and I'm looking forward to downloading it and checking it out as soon as I have time.

I've been using Thunderbird for a while now and I like it a lot. I have 4 different e-mail accounts that it checks and I haven't even thought of using another e-mail client in some time.

It was the lack of a global inbox that annoyed me last time I checked it out. Apparently that has changed in recent months.

Yep, it is there now and it works great. I have it set up so when I reply to a message, it automatically sends it through the smtp server for that e-mail account.

So help me out here. I downloaded it and am trying to set up my accounts. In mail.app I can look at the emails in my accounts either through the global inbox or by clicking on the individual account inboxes nested within it. Can I/How do I do this in thunderbird?

Also, one wierd apparent bug: the shortcuts for navigating messages are unmodified keys, so when I try to search my email messages using the search field, hitting 'f' or 'b' or any other key designated as a shortcut triggers that action and, thus, I can't do searches containing those letters. Am I doing something wrong?

Unfortunately with Thunderbird it is either a global inbox for all e-mail accounts or separate inboxes for each account. With a little setup with filters and settings, you can have your own folders for every one of your accounts using the global inbox. This is what I have done.

I have created a main folder under my global inbox for each of my accounts. Each one of those has their own folder for sent messages, drafts, and templates. Then I add whatever folders I need for each account. I then went to Tools<Account Settings and changed the settings for “Copies & Folders” to point to those folders. Then I set up filters for my Local Folders to sort my mail to the right folders. Make sure when you set up message filters that you are setting them for the appropriate account from the drop down at the top as you can have specific filters run for individual accounts.

I then added all of my outgoing server settings. Just go to “Outgoing Server (SMTP)” and then click on the “Advanced…” button to add more SMTP servers. Then go to “Server Settings” for each mail account you have and click on the “Advanced” button. Click on the SMTP tab and select the SMTP server that corresponds with your account.

As far as your problem with the search bar, I can’t duplicate this.

I hope that makes sense. If not PM or e-mail me and I’ll do some screenshot type of tutorial or something.

That's exactly what I was trying to avoid.

Must have been a fluke. It went away after program restart.

Where have you been all this time? ;) :p

To be honest, Firefox never lit a fire in my loins like it did with others, so I just didn't delve that much into Mozilla's other projects. I do like Camino 0.8 though.

When will people learn that there is no need for a calendar client! And if you need one then you can get iCal or something else that does the job.

Just because you don't need an integrated calendar doesn't mean that others can't benefit from it and that the software market won't benefit from having more competing options.

Rather than bumping a 16-month-old thread that is largely irrelevant because Thunderbird is now at version 1.5, I think we'd be better off continuing in the new topic you started here (http://forums.applenova.com/showthread.php?t=15311).
