Folder Actions: What am I missing?

Are folder actions supposed to work immediately and automatically? Because they're not for me. I'm talking about kind of a drop box folder, where when files are added, the script plays. But it's just not happening when I drag the files into the folder. Folder actions are enabled and the script is attached to the correct folder. It's not bad code because even apple's example scripts don't work. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

oh, an I'm running 10.5 on a new iMac..

For me the folder actions only seem to activate if the folder I drag it to is closed. It doesn't seem to work if the folder with the action attached is open.

I'm also using Leopard.
