Any one have any suggestions, or better yet, drives to avoid? Looks like I need a new drive to backup a 250 GB iMac so I figured I would get a 1 TB drive. Seems like there are several reasonable offers in the mid $200 range from Seagate and Western Digital. Everyone else looks to be north of $300 and I am not sure it is wroth paying up again to get a Lacie or something similar.

Here is the LaCie for well under $300. That is what I would get.

Not sure about Seagate, but avoid Western Digital like the plague (which it is).

1TB LaCie drives with FW are going to cost over $300. They retail starting at $340, or more if you want FW 800.

I can't recommend the Lacie drives enough :)

I use one of their 1TB FW800 drives with SuperDuper! and its great.

I like them too, but they aren't cheap. At least in my case, however, they've been worth the cost.

check Slickdeals. I routinely see a drive on there for like 150-200 weekly.

This comment confuses me. Western Digital products have always worked well for me...?

whoops - sorry. That's what I get for making a post on my way out the door.

HERE is the LaCie drive "triple interface" for mega-cheep:

As far as other brands....

I've had very good success with the "house brand" from OWC - here's one with FireWire 400 for under $320

I picked up a Seagate 1 TB SATA drive a few weeks back and stuck it in an enclosure. Still the best bang for your buck if you can find a deal on an internal and just get an external enclosure.
