Hi all,
Is it possible to use either an iPhone or iPhone 3g as a modem for my MBP? I am going to be hitting the road soon and am looking for mobile options.

It's possible through jailbreaking and SSH on the current iPhone, but not out of the box.
AT&T will not allow it.

Harrisw1, if you do a little research you'll find that it is possible (http://www.intomobile.com/2008/02/20/tether-your-iphone-to-your-leopard-machine-use-iphone-edge-data-on-your-laptop.html) (though obviously slow compared to typical broadband) on the first-generation iPhone.
The iPhone 3G, however, will come with a new firmware that isn't yet "jailbreakable". To know for sure, you'll have to wait a few days/weeks for a fix to come out. As it reaches 3G speeds, there will be a lot of demand for a tethering solution, so I'm sure developers will make that capability a priority.
Yeah. I figure this will be available from AT&T via the App store at some point in the near future. But they will probably make you use a DataConnect plan, which is $60 a month, on top of whatever your iPhone plan is.
Maybe they won't get you for the full $60 since you're already paying for the iPhone data at either $30 or $45, but I'm sure they won't let you do it off only a cell phone data plan. Not when they charge $60 a month otherwise.
