A friend of mine is considering getting a MacBook Pro, but he is concerned about whether there will be enough firepower for how he intends to use it. I convinced him to register (http://forums.applenova.com/member.php?u=11800) and post his concerns here, but he wasn't able to start a new thread for some reason. In any event, I figured I should go ahead and post for him. Hopefully he will be able to chime in later.

He is planning on using it as an editing station for FCP Studio (including some HD footage) and Adobe's Creative Suite. If anyone with practical experience on the new MacBook Pros and HD editing could chime in we'd really appreciate it. What has the experience been like? Can it edit smoothly?

I'm also not sure if he should get the 15" or 17". He has access to a pretty sweet deal on the 15" that is $200 or so cheaper than the normal EDU discount price. The only problem is that it is for a "stock" configuration and he wouldn't be able to customize it. Is the upgrade to 17", in lieu of the additional discount, worth it for his needs? Is the stock RAM enough for heavy use like this?

Thanks for the help guys. :)

Probably because it says "Awaiting Email Confirmation" on his account.

As for the RAM, he'd be better of upgrading it with 3rd party RAM himself than getting Apple to install it for ludicrous prices. As for the other question, I'll leave it to someone more knowledgeable than myself ;)
