Without turing this into just a bunch of shameless self-promotional ads, I thought it'd be nice to have a place to share great deals we find with some of our fellow members. My dad emailed me a deal for some RAM from Fry's and I thought it was well worth sharing. So if you find an awesome deal, share it with the rest of us.

Frys.com is offering the Crucial 2GB (2x1GB) PC-3200 DDR (http://www.frys.com/product/5586870) Desktop Memory Kit (model# CT2CP12864Z40B) for a low $19.99 shipped following a $30 mail-in rebate. Great for upgrading older, yet still viable systems.

Free Shipping made this a great deal for my server who could use the RAM upgrade. I ordered two with hopes that the rebate will apply to both sets since the wording is "Limit one rebate per product per address."

Very cool. I'll keep an eye on this thread, especially with Black Friday coming up. I'm trying to talk the wife into a new laptop, and BF prices might be enough to put her over the edge.

Of course, I really just want to buy it so she can use it and free up the desktop that I built for myself. :D

So, like, if anybody finds a decent non-netbook laptop for under about $500, let me know. Obviously, I'm not expecting a Mac. :p

Probably not interesting to many people here, but if anyone's looking to build a PC, AMD has a deal going on now where you get big discounts when you buy a processor with a motherboard.

March AMDness (http://promotions.newegg.com/AMD/March09/index.html?cm_sp=Cat_CPUs-Processors-_-AMD/March09-_-http%3a%2f%2fpromotions.newegg.com%2fAMD%2fMarch09 %2f478x88.jpg)

I got $45 off a Phenom II X3 720 purchased in combination with a Biostar TA790GX motherboard.

Thanks Luca. I've got an old Windows box that I really don't use much since we purchased our iMac. But I've been kicking around the idea of doing a rebuild on it so I'll check these deals out. I'd rather just get a mini, but picking up a motherboard, processor, RAM and video card should be cheaper.

Kudos to Newegg or/and AMD on the "March AMDness" event title. It's the little, smart things like that that put a smile on my face and end up making my day. :)

One thing to keep in mind... while AMD has some nice stuff out at the moment, the deals there are not the cheapest ones you can get. If you want a low-cost rebuild, the #1 choice is still the Intel E5200. It's about $73 for the processor, which overclocks like crazy and beats every Athlon X2 even at stock speed. Get a budget motherboard for ~$80 and you're looking at a significant savings compared to the AMD ones. But the performance isn't as good as the Phenom IIs.

A lot of newer motherboards (like the Biostar I picked up) also have really good integrated video. Mine has 128 MB of dedicated VRAM built into the motherboard so it doesn't take from my system RAM, and it has HDMI output and is even capable of dual monitors. Some AMD motherboards will even let you add certain low-end video cards to be used in conjunction with the integrated video and improve the performance (though if you're gaming I'd still go for a solid midrange card).

The site Audioholics is having some good deals on nice APC surge protectors and conditioners. APC is a well-respected name in the field of power devices, and there are some good deals on their stuff.

I bought this guy (http://store.audioholics.com/product/1828/0/apc-av-c3-power-filter), which was in more my budget than the larger rack-mountable models.

While these are well-suited for home theater applications, I'm sure they would work fine in office situations too.

My girlfriend just bought a refurbed unibody 2.4GHz Macbook, with the default 2GB RAM and 250GB HDD, along with a 24" Cinema Display. The refurb cost was $1299, but the bargain part is that after she got it set up she discovered that it had 4GB RAM and the 320GB HDD.

She reckons she saved about $500 off the cost of a new one with those options. Whatabargain! :D

Not surprising given how much Apple makes you pay for upgrades, but a good deal nonetheless. Does it have the backlit keyboard?

That's actually a pretty bad deal except that stuff might be more expensive in Canada. For instance, the exchange rate right now works out to $600 Canadian = $492 US. Still, you can get a brand new 24" IPS monitor with multiple inputs and a 3-year warranty for around $600 US, and I'd say that's worth it over a used, single-input, no-warranty 23".

Amazon has a good deal right now where you buy a Samsung Blu-ray player, a qualifying Samsung LCD TV, and you get a $200 instant rebate. Link (http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_84127331_4?tag=&ie=UTF8&docId=1000362421&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=hero-quick-promo&pf_rd_r=007PQ9V0FHECS7XQV7HX&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=473796891&pf_rd_i=B0014H16V0). I'm tempted to spring on it for the 40" and then sell the Blu-ray player via Craigslist to get essentially an additional $200 off, but alas, I think 40" might be too much tv for our living room.

Luca
2009-04-17, 16:46
Speaking of Samsung HDTVs, I just pulled up this thread to post a deal on a 25.5" Samsung 1080p TV.

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Touch-T260HD-25-5-Inch-Monitor/dp/B001AYCNIW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1240001454&sr=8-1

It's $450 with free shipping, but it has a $100 mail-in rebate. Normally I don't like MIRs but if they are big enough it's worth it to fill them out. In this case it is because you can get a very high quality compact HDTV that will work just as well as a computer monitor for $350. And it's a Samsung, not some off-brand.

tomoe, are you sure 40" would be too big? I have a 32" in my small living room (one bedroom apartment) and it wasn't big enough to be comfortable until I moved my couch much closer to my TV. Unless you have a very small room or simply don't have much space available for whatever reason, I'd think a 40" would be ideal or even a little on the small side for an average living room.

Argh! I like Samsung's quality but I honestly can not stand their "Touch of Color" line. Why someone would want to take a high quality panel and then put it on a non-neutral surround is just beyond me. I know the little red "touch" isn't much but it doesn't take much to make the picture appear warmer. (In fact, the fact that it's not fully surrounding the bezel and only on the bottom is actually probably worse, because then it would "warm" perception unevenly, no?) Sony's done the same thing (with colored bezels), and it's always maddening; the thing is, Sony only does that on their lowest-end TVs, knowing that videophiles would object. But Samsung does it across the board, and even charges you extra for the privilege of having a TV with a non-neutral bezel. Ack.

Both of those deals are for the Touch of Color line. They're still not bad deals (especially Luca's) but I don't understand why adding something that harms accurate perception should be a "selling point." It's style over substance, and not at all what I expected from Samsung. Their previous "High Design" sets are just as stylish, and neutral, anyway.

All other TVs/monitors are white/black/grey for a reason.

Crackdown for $10 shipped. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16874103043)

NewEgg actually has some pretty good deals on video games. Also,

DoubleSight 26" H-IPS monitor for $399 ($369 after mail-in rebate). (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824185010&Tpk=doublesight)

Probably the cheapest price possible for an IPS monitor that large. It's worth a look, just make sure you read the reviews first. Apparently it lacks a backlight control. But still, it's some $200 less than most 1920x1200 IPS monitors, so it's worth considering.

EDIT: [H]ard|OCP has a long thread discussing the monitor: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1319356&page=23

There is a fair bit of criticism for it, largely stemming from the non-adjustable backlight (some people are unhappy with how bright it is), thick bezel, and lack of 1:1 pixel mapping. So it seems you get what you pay for... still, it's $370.

Best Buy (I know, right?) has a sale on two great Brother laser printers. The 2140 is $59 and the 2170w (which adds WiFi) is $89. I just snagged a 2140. They both have great reviews on Amazon and I've been watching them for a while; they go on sale at office supply stores every so often but I've never seen them that low before. Right now that's about half Amazon's price, on the 2140.

You know how I always complain about people buying inkjet photo printers and using them mostly for text? You know how I always say that people should just get a cheap-ish laser printer and then pretty quickly with the savings in ink/toner alone they'd be able to buy one of those awesome little dye-sub photo printers for when they actually needed to make prints? Well, AppleNova is officially on notice. You now have no excuse.

Oh, and if you do take the plunge, be aware that the printer doesn't come with a USB cable, for some reason. Pretty much everybody here should have a couple of those laying around but with the proliferation of proprietary cables I was surprised to find out that I didn't have a single regular USB! It was like bizarro land.

It's just so weird, though. It only costs them like ten cents to add a USB cable but they'd rather inconvenience their users...it's like how the Apple TV doesn't come with any video cables. If this was a wireless networking printer I could sort of see, but there's no way to use it without USB.

As for dollar store cables, I should have thought about that. I know I could get cables for basically nothing online but I didn't want to wait...Target's USB cables were $10.99. I think Best Buy's were $14.99! I found a 3' cable at my college bookstore for $4.99 and just jumped on it. I have an extension if that's not long enough. (Yes, I had a USB extension cable. And Mini-DVI to DVI. And DVI to HDMI. And Toslink to Toslink, and Toslink to mini Toslink. BUT NO PLAIN USB!)

It feels like my HP is on its last legs now, so I might look at those Brothers.

The Best Buy I was at had six 2140s left and only one 2170w. On Monday afternoon. So I think, when you sell stuff for half off, it goes fast, or something? :p

http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0321997

Hence, I've gone ahead and splurged and bought the perfect $800 macbook. I highly suggest you do the same if you can stand the rebate process :)

Finally, refreshing Gizmodo every hour has paid a dividend:)

I just came in here to post that. WOW. What a deal! You almost never see such discounts on Macs.

And I saw it on Gizmodo too. :p

Also, Best Buy has more Brother printers on sale this week - only they're multi-function printer/scanner/copier deals, not "just printers" like last time, so if that was what was keeping you from buying a laser printer, here's your chance. Three are on sale - one inkjet (blah), one laser, and one laser with WiFi networking - all $60-70 bucks off, just like before.

Wow, that MacBook deal ($799 for the brand new model) is amazing!

On the USB cable thing, mentioned earlier above, I saw a stack of Canon printers at Walmart (can't recall the exact models, but they were Pixma series with 4-digit model numbers...two different models both selling for $40). Anyway, they had USB cables included. In fact, the box graphics kinda made a big point of that, with that feature played up a bit.

So maybe it'll become more common?

I always thought that was one of the chintzier, "grrr..." moves in the electronics-buying arena. You just laid down $50-300 for a printer, and they can't be bothered to toss in a 6' USB cable? And heaven help you if you were wanting to buy one at CompUSA...where everything - everything - seemed to start at $29.99 and go up from there.

:err:

Best Buy, sadly, seems to do the same sort of thing...their cables, toner, hubs, blank media, drives, etc. are always way more expensive than the same versions you can find at Target or Walmart. You wouldn't think that would be the case, but it is.

ATTN pscates (or any other fans of Target or design):

Target is giving away free Dysons! The catch is you have to buy one first. If you buy the special Blueprint edition (glossy white plastic, with sexy designery-markings in blue) of the DC24 (the short version of the slim version of the Ball - it's called the Baby abroad), you get a Root 6 handheld vac (normally $150) for free. That's two vacuums for the price of...two (this is Dyson, we're talking about) but that's a better deal than usual. $429 gets you both. Did I mention the Blueprint is sexy? A Target exclusive (on the DC24), too. The DC24 is the cheapest Dyson upright anyone should own, because if you're springing for a Dyson you have to get the Ball. The deal ends Saturday.

Oh, and Walmart will be selling Xbox 360 Arcades for $199 with a free $100 gift card on Saturday. That's an unheard of deal on a console - it's like half off! But you have to go to Walmart...twice.

Finally, Old Navy *may* be giving away LEGO Rock Band with a $20 purchase on Black Friday. While supplies last, of course. They open at three...good luck with that.

It depends on how big of a drive you want. I know they have (had?) a deal where you can get a 60GB drive, headset, Ethernet cable, and 3 month Live membership for $99. I think 120GB drives, by themselves, run $139 or so. And yes, you so still need to use Microsoft's special drives (or at least the enclosures - it's possible to hack a third-party drive into one of them, once you have one).

Either way, I'd recommend using that gift card to pick up one of the 60 or 120 GB hard drives. Great deal.

Sounds about right. However, I picked up a 120 GB hard drive from eBay for $70. Had to get the transfer cable from MS as well, but that isn't necessary if you're adding the hard drive to a brand new Arcade console. It's only an issue if you want to move stuff from one drive to a new one (in my case, from my old 20 GB to the new 120 GB).

I'm nearly 100% sure that you can run any of these apps off the flash drive. You won't retain your preferences but even that you can fix by copying that over to your USB drive and putting it in the appropriate place on the mac you're using. You may need to serialize it, too, but that's not an issue.

And this is a very niche deal, but some people might be interested: Mass Effect for PC is $9.99 on Steam right now. I broke down and bought it even though I've got several RPGs in the queue already. I need to quit buying games and start playing them!

If anyone's looking for a nice TV that can be used as a computer monitor as well, there's a refurb Vizio 37" 1080p LCD for $500 here:

http://unclevic.com/a134/pd/40-3-0-7968-vizio-vl370m-vl370mp-vizio-vl370m--37-inch-1080p-full-hdtv

Site has some annoying Flash crap going on but I've bought from them in the past and had no problems. In fact they were very helpful. I got a 32" version of the same thing for $400 months ago. Vizio is kind of a low-end brand, but they're at least better than the bargain basement ones. When my first one had problems, they paid for the return shipping and the second one has been flawless.

The little local sports pub I go to is outfitted with various-sized Vizio flat-screen TVs (most seem to be in the 30-38" range, just guessing, and then there are two that are 50" or above). They all look really nice...clear, good color, etc.

I'd probably get one for myself, if/when the time comes (I've currently got a 22" CRT 4:3 TV (yeah, I know..."how quaint and retro").

:D

I'd like something in the 32-37" range, for the size of my place. Nothing too outrageously big, but definitely something that's a step up, in size, to the TV I have now. I'll check that link out, Luca.

Then any ebay searches you make during that session should be eligible for cash back. Steam's holiday sale is going on now. There are some really good games for really little money. I know that Steam is a PC service but we've got some PC gamers here. Some select titles:

- Braid: $2.49
- Mirror's Edge: $4.99
- GTA 4: $7.49
- Stalker: $1.99

Personally, I'm thinking of picking up Machinarium (http://origin.avclub.com/articles/machinarium,34517/), World of Zoo (for playing with my son) and Braid. I already bought Torchlight for $10 earlier this year.

Steam is kicking my butt with their sales. Hopefully they'll stop so I can actually play some of these games!

That didn't take long! An amazing deal for anyone looking. They also had 20" aluminum iMacs (2.66GHz, I believe) on there around the same time as my post above, for $749 (but they're gone too, no surprise).

I'm shocked at how affordable they're all getting. I don't follow this stuff in any serious, hardcore way (it's only when I walk into a Target, Walmart or Best Buy that I see 40-42" models getting down into the $500-600 range that I think back to a few years ago, when nothing was under $1,000).

But, at this pace, come Christmas (or sometime in 2011), getting a ~40" LCD TV shouldn't be that big of an expense? For someone who's still got a little 24"(?) off-brand tube TV of so-so quality/clarity, that's something to keep in mind.

Then again, I should just treat myself to a 27" iMac and Netflix account and say "to hell with TV and cable", and all it represents these days (crazy skanks from Atlanta or Orange County fighting on the sidewalk; people embarrassing themselves by singing/dancing badly; unfunny sitcoms; pointless, derivative dramas; biased, useless "news"; professional sports played by thugs, addicts and crybabies, etc.).

A 42" HD TV for $200-250 isn't going to change the fact that the only thing on is wall-to-wall, unwatchable shit.

Oh totally, it's incredible how fast they're dropping in price now that HD has hit critical mass. And you can't even buy a non-HD set any more. What's more, all but the lowest-end sets seem to be 1080p -- I think 720p sets will be basically gone in a few years, though that won't stop some channels from broadcasting in 720p (or 1080i).

I remember people freaking out about how customers don't care about HD and how most people will never pay a premium for such a niche, high-priced technology. Those people seemed to have forgotten about that last word, technology :p

Wasn't that like 1995 to 1997-ish. I was anxious about HDTV when I was in high school way back then. :p 15 years is a long time for HDTV, or any technology to be around. If I were keeping tally I'd say early adopters got screwed over pretty well by this switch. Things are just now starting to settle down and take root. In the back of my mind HDTV feels like it is the norm and standard def/analogue is for cheap-ass cable companies.

Paying for HDTV is out of the question for me. It might have enticed early adopters, but it is the norm now.

MacHeist will find a way to make it so all apps are unlocked, first by offering up additional app(s) before the deadline (though sometimes you have to Twitter some shit to get the unlock code) to get more people on board. Second, I guess they'd drop the bundle purchase requirement. Regardless, MacHeist has always had everything offered unlocked by the end of the Heist. :)

Yeah. In the last NanoBundle I don't think they hit the unlock threshold for Mariner Write but they still gave it to everybody. The "locking" is basically a gimmick to get people to evangelize; I would imagine they'd run into legal problems if they didn't give all the apps to everybody (since they'd then be selling a chance at software).

I'm buying the bundle for RapidWeaver, and I'm not at all worried that I won't get it. Thanks for posting, 709! :O

I know some people were interested in this (I know I am but am not ready to buy yet). There are refurbished 27inch iMacs at the apple store. Both quads and the Core 2 Duos. The quad is a pretty sweet deal at $1699.

Some Mac games are on sale at D2D (http://www.direct2drive.com/buy-mac-download). The gem in that bunch, IMHO, is Dragon Age at $25. C&C: Red Alert 3 is only $15, too. Not Steam Holiday Sale caliber, but not too bad.

Can anyone think of any advantages to using RipIt over MacTheRipper?

RipIt is worth the price if you asked me. They are really good about getting the DVDs ripped whole. This lets you use something like Handbreak to part out and convert or just burn to DVD for backup. Painless and simple. Seems to work with far more DVDs that MacTheRipper does. I've missed more disks with MTR than RipIt.

CoverScout is worth it too. I'm pretty sure those are the only apps I'll use regularly though I don't know if RapidWeaver gets unlocked. I might use it over Espresso.

Out of the box, it's failed 2/2 now. One the disk was damaged, the other it couldn't complete. I'm not having good luck recently with software.

I was doing some reading this morning and it seems as if Tweetie will be added to the Nanobundle. I doubt it will be Tweetie Two, but even still, if you haven't gotten Tweetie for Mac, the bundle is worth it just for that.

EDIT: So, after reading the Macheist forums, it appears as if Tweetie will be added once Dreamweaver is unlocked (another 4700 bundles need to be sold) They won't say what the unlocking level is, but it should happen.

What makes the deal worth it, is that it's a free upgrade license to Tweetie 2 when it comes out and it also gives access to the Tweetie 2 beta in about a month.

I always wanted to get RipIt and DreamWeaver, so getting Tweetie 2 out of the deal as well is a no brainer. I was going to buy Tweetie 2 regardless, but this makes a much better deal.

Last day for the MacHeist nanoBundle, if anyone is interested. :)

Like kieran mentions above, Tweetie(2) (http://www.atebits.com/tweetie-mac/) is now part of the bundle, plus there's a couple of Freeverse games (Airburst Extreme (http://www.freeverse.com/mac/product/?id=311) & Burning Monkey Solitaire (http://www.freeverse.com/mac/product/?id=38)) and a little menubar app (Tracks (http://conceitedsoftware.com/products/tracks)) you can snag for free by twitter-spamming.

Load up! $19.95 for everything (or $17.95 if you've purchased a previous bundle).

I've bought the last 2 MacHeist bundles on that basis alone. Has it been a waste of money? I don't think so but that's because I love software.

And if you think that MJ is worth buying, the bundle definitely is since it's half the price of MJ alone (though, given your love for Scrivener, I don't know where MJ would fit).

I will say that over the years, there have often been times that an app. that I got from one of the MacHeist bundles came in handy later on, or was if nothing else useful in testing.

They're dirt cheap, and if you need them ever it's nice to have a registration key on hand and ready to go, esp. since they're altogether cheaper than the app. I usually wanted just by itself.

I always go to the page that lists them out and then save it as a PDF when printing. Much safer to have it on hand that way. I also always save the original install images in the same folder.

Sometimes an app. gets updated and they stop making the older version you had registered available, or the company can go under etc.

I was more expressing surprise that Activision hadn't dropped the price through the floor in desperation to try to make up for poor sales. I don't actually know how well DJ Hero has been selling, only that it got a lot of bad or at least very skeptical press. With a new * Hero game coming out practically every month, I just figured they'd probably already started selling it at a deep discount. Guess I was wrong! Maybe it actually has been popular; I haven't kept up.

It's not a bad game, it's just (from my impressions) not at all a party game like Guitar Hero is. It's not as accessible, it's not really multiplayer (I mean you can add a second turntable, but no one does that) and it focuses more on making mixes than on just mimicking notes. It's not nearly as pick-up-and-play, I mean, you look at a screen of Guitar Hero and it's immediately obvious what you're supposed to do. DJ Hero, not so much. So it's not really a Hero game; it's kind of misnamed, though of course the GH brand is/was worth a gazillion dollars.

But yeah, way too many Guitar Heros (and Band Hero, WTF) came out in in 2009, and none of them did that well (I remember they were giving GH: Van Halen for free before it came out.). DJ Hero sort of...flopped, like Tony Hawk Ride did. Maybe, with our guitars and drums and microphones and controllers and remotes and nunchucks and MotionPluses and balance boards and dance mats and EyeToys, we just have too much plastic shit already.*

Activision claims to be drastically reducing the number of Hero games they make this year, to just GH5 and DJ Hero 2 or whatever. Sounds fine with me. Now if only Harmonix would drop Green Day: Rock Band :wtf:

*Although you know what game I wish had come with plastic shit? Pop'n Music. We finally get a version of Pop'n in the US, except it's on the Wii, and doesn't support the Pop'n controller? You waggle the Wii remote instead of...y'know...pop'n. Instead, you watch your Mii play Pop'n. It's closer to Samba de Amigo than Pop'n which is to say it isn't Pop'n at all. WTF Konami. First Rock Revolution, and then this?

In addition to the recently announced price cuts, Amazon is now giving you $50 savings when you buy a Zune HD and a select accessory, like the HDTV dock or the "premium" car kit. The HDTV dock is one of the cooler things about the Zune, but its $79 list price was just too high. Now, though, it's essentially negative five dollars. The 16GB Zune with the dock is just $195.

The iPod touch is the better "pocket computer," but the Zune HD is the better media player, with a 16:9 OLED screen and double the storage in a more pocketable form factor with an HDTV dock for the same price. And Zune Pass is still an awesome music discovery tool, its "killer app" if you will. The only downside? No Mac support. But if you have a PC...

If you buy Toy Story and Toy Story 2 Blu-rays from Amazon, Amazon chops $10 off the price, meaning it's $19.99 each. That's a pretty good deal, but what makes it a great deal is that Disney Movie Rewards (http://www.disneymovierewards.go.com/index.htm) also has a deal where they give you a free ticket to Toy Story 3 when you punch in each of the included reward codes. So that's two Pixar Blu-rays and two tickets to TS3 for $39.98 total. Not bad :) (You also get 250 Disney Rewards points, which is enough to...donate a sapling to a school. But if you scanned in your TS3 ticket stubs, you could get a Ratatouille mini poster! Or donate two saplings to a school! :D)

The only caveat is that the tickets have a maximum value of $8.50, so don't expect to see TS3 in 3D on Disney's dime. But I have a hunch that most of you aren't too interested in the 3D showings anyway ;)

How would one use a 40 gig SSD drive effectively? I mean it would only hold the OS and a handful of programs, right?

Well, on my MBP, it would hold my OS X install, all of my applications, and a stripped-down user folder; everything else would be kept on the second drive (mostly music/video). I'm only using around 75GB of space on the drive I've got installed at the moment anyway, and that's with a relatively large home directory (>40GB).

I'd be doing a fresh install, so I figure I should only be using around 25GB of space total, including a ~15GB /Applications folder, on the SSD when all is said and done.

Interesting. If I did this, it would void my Applecare, right? I just extended it, but I could cancel it since it would be void anyway. I'd get a refund of about $150 which would cover a new SSD. What do I want more, 22 months of Applecare or an SSD... Decisions, decisions...

This is still unclear to me. We broached this topic a little bit at the end of my discussion about the MBP, Optibay doesn't make that very clear. I imagine it would but who knows...

I guess it depends on whether your MBP has a user-replaceable hard drive. If Apple puts instructions for how to replace it on their website, I doubt you'd void your warranty. If it involves keeping track of a couple dozen screws, you probably would.

Continuing my policy of only purchasing books that are too large to read in-store, I just ordered Justin Cronin's The Passage (which everybody just will not shut up about) from Amazon for 43% off and had the option of adding The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (by Steig Larsson...seriously, have you been living under a rock or something?) for a crazy 60% off. I got two of the biggest (in any sense) books of the summer for under $27. In other words, I bought a super-hot $27 book and got a super-hot $27.99 book for free.

I'm pretty happy. :D It would have been better if I remembered to use the AN link though :wtf: but if anybody is planning on picking up those two books, get them from that newfangled Amazon thing, srsly. Sorry Powell's :(

Oh, and for anyone considering purchasing a PlayStation Move, Kmart is having another one of their krazy game deals, because nobody buys video games at Kmart. Buy the PlayStation Move Starter Kit and get a $25 "gaming coupon" for a future purchase. Buy a Move controller, NaviCon, or charging station and get a $10 gaming coupon. Buy any of Sony's Move launch titles or Toy Story 3 (which supports the Move) and get a $10 gaming coupon. And if you're just buying the PS3, if you get the 320GB PS3/Move bundle, you get a $40 gaming coupon, which is sort of like getting 10% off. The deal lasts until the 25th, or "while supplies last," but any coupons obtained last until 10/23. It's "officially" one coupon per customer, though. Deets here. I cashed in on this deal today. I got the Move sports bundle because I didn't have an eye camera and that made the game $10 plus I got an extra $5 in the coupon deal over just buying them separately (one $25 coupon vs. two $10 coupons) and bought an extra Wand thingie and a Navcon.

My wife and I played Sports Champions tonight. It was a lot of fun. The motion tracking is so much better than the Wii, it's not even funny. We fought with swords, ducking and blocking with lots of energy. We shot arrows til our arms hurt and we played ping pong trying to kill the ball. It was great. And felt as realistic as could be expected from watching pixels on a screen.

As far as motion controlled gaming, it's probably as good as it'll get for a long while. Until we can figure out how to give light some heft so it feels like you're striking physical objects. I think that'll be a while.

I'm glad you like it! I tried doing that deal but the guy at Kmart didn't know what he was talking about...said it didn't come out today. I pointed to the sign saying "PlayStation Move coming 9/17/10" and he treked to the back of the store and begrudgingly brought out...the $399 PS3 + PlayStation Move bundle. I told him I already had the system but he insisted that was the only way it came. Of course, it isn't. (I think he just didn't want to go back again.)

I thanked him for his time and left. I might have still been tempted to try back later for the deal but as I left I heard him muttering rude things about me, even though I had been patient and polite with him and didn't tell him how wrong he was. I was just like, it's not worth coming here and purchasing everything on four different transactions just to get $55 in credit I'd have to use there, especially when they're rude. And I had to go to GameStop to pre-order Rock Band 3 anyway, so...

I got the starter bundle, a second Move, a NaviCon, and the dock. I'll post a more thorough review of everything tomorrow, as if anyone cares what I think, but spoiler alert! Recommended.

If anyone missed the $19 TRU deal, Target's clearing out DJ Hero for $29 (with the turntable, of course). All versions (though I don't think they carried the PS2 version...). Amazon and Best Buy have both had DJ Hero on sale for $39 recently but the Target deal is the best deal since the TRU one, and will probably be the best deal, since DJ Hero 2 comes out in like a week and everybody else has already had sales to clear out their stock.

I got the last PS3 version at my nearest Target, but they still had multiple copies of it for Wii and Xbox 360, so it should be still worth a check if it's something you're into.

Target is launching their new Target Card rewards program. When you pay using a Target Card, you get a 5% discount on pretty much anything in the store. Not 5% cash back — a 5% discount, right then and there. This is a huge upgrade from their old rewards program, where you earned one day of 10% off shopping after spending $1,000. (Well, assuming you spend less than $500 each trip.)

"But Robo," you might say, "this is just a campaign to get everybody to sign up for their super-high-interest credit cards and you're falling for it hook, line, and sinker!" And it's true that they probably want people to sign up for their super-high-interest credit cards. But.

You don't need a Target credit card to take advantage of the rewards program. Target doesn't really promote it, but they also offer a Target debit card. The Target debit card is free, and it works just like a regular debit card at Target stores, except that it now gives you 5% off at checkout. You can even get use it to get cash at the till (up to $40).

If you shop at Target a lot, and don't mind giving Target your checking account information, this is actually a really compelling deal. They're basically saving money on card transactions and passing the savings on to you — but whereas stores like IKEA give you 1% cash back for using a debit card, Target gives you a 5% discount. You just have to use their debit card. I looked through the short list of exclusions and it's really only the obvious ones (no $100 gift cards for $95 for you). IIRC Target Pharmacy purchases are the only "real" purchases that don't get the discount, because Target has a different rewards program for their pharmacy.

I don't want to sound like a shill or anything, and no, I don't work at Target. Just thought I'd share. ("Attention Target shoppers," ha ha.)
