View Full Version : University students/alum with .edu email... TheFaceBook.com
Who here has heard about it/joined?
www.thefacebook.com
basically it is friendster but tweaked for college students*...
(added new schools 9/12/04)
We have opened up Thefacebook for popular consumption at:
American Amherst Auburn Baylor BC Berkeley Binghamton Bowdoin Brandeis Brown BU Bucknell Cal Poly Caltech CMU Colgate Columbia Cornell Dartmouth Duke Emory FSU Georgetown GWU Hamilton Harvard Haverford Howard Indiana JMU Johns Hopkins Lehigh Maine Maryland Mich Tech Michigan Middlebury Mississippi MIT MSU MU Ohio Northeastern Northwestern Notre Dame NYU Oberlin Oklahoma Penn State Pepperdine Princeton Reed Rice Rochester Rutgers Santa Clara Simmons Smith Stanford Swarthmore Syracuse Temple Tennessee Texas Texas A&M Tufts Tulane UC Davis UC Irvine UC Riverside UCF UChicago UCLA UConn UCSB UCSC UCSD UF UGA UIllinois UMass UNC UPenn USC USF USFCA UVA Vanderbilt Vassar Vermont Villanova Virginia Tech Wake Forest WashU Wellesley Wesleyan William & Mary Williams Wisconsin Yale
it is available to ANYONE who has access to a university email address <*from the above list*> ... they allow one account per address...
it is actually pretty fun-especially when you have different personalities (IE john Mccain and people like StrongBad or trogdor...)
You can search across each school's database at once so if you know your friend's name but not where they go to school you should still be able to find them.
anyone else here tried it out?
has no one here even heard about it??
not that it would surprise me or anything... ;)
Never heard of it until you posted this link. I then tried to enter my email address, but it said I needed a valid email address. I retyped it to make sure, and tried using @tc.umn.edu instead of @umn.edu, but nothing worked.
Looks like it's actually NOT available to anyone with a .edu email address.
oh sorry i thought I made that clear in the first post... your school needs to be hand coded into the system, note the list of schools...

i'm on it.
I've been on thefacebook for a month now. It's really cool, except that right now everyone on it are stupid sorority girls. Maybe once fall semester starts some more respectable people will start showing up. At least that's the situation at U of M.

Yo, seriously man, I thought it was just UVa. Everyone on there is in a sorority. wtf.
I began to think that everyone at UVa is in a sorority.
They're hot...but I dunno...
Steve, how did you get your name bolded and italicized?
I can't seem to edit the first post in this thread, but there was a MAJOR update to the facebook; it looks like over 200 schools now. Luca, Minnesota State is on it...

It'll never take off.
I had a Facebook account way before it was cool. I also deleted my Facebook account way before that was cool too. What does that make me? a big square apparently.

Wow. Uh... congratulations?

Clearly, my post went over your head.

A very interesting comment for a three years old thread!

I never had one in the first place. That makes me way cooler.

I think that was the point.
I got one so I could look up the information of someone my good friend was about to date. Which makes it sort of stalker-y, I guess. I was finding out what kind of person this person was so I could warn my friend off dating them, so IMHO I was doing it for a good reason. I saw her Facebook and was like "wtf does he like her for, they have nothing in common". Sure enough, it was a very rocky relationship and a bad breakup.
Now I have use it for trivial things like messaging my roommates even though we all live in the same apartment.
Clearly, my post went over your head.
No, I get it. Thank you.

I'm a college professor, and I find Facebook to be incredibly useful--mainly because the vast majority of our students are on it. Many of the students check Facebook very frequently, so it's often the quickest way to get in touch with them. Facebook allows you to create groups and events, which are wonderful for managing student organizations. It's also very useful for learning the students' names. When you teach a large class and don't call the roll every day, it takes a while to learn who's who. Most people have very recent profile pictures on Facebook, so it's very helpful in figuring that out.
Once, a colleague was sending out invitations to everyone eligible to join an honor society. He had a list consisting only of GPAs and names--some of which were foriegn names that we didn't recognize as male or female. We needed to know their genders so we could use the appropriate pronouns, and Facebook helped up figure out most of those.
I also use it to keep up with some of my friends and family, but for the most part I use it to communicate with the students. It's a very valueable tool.
In addition to that, leachboy, you can totally find out who is boning who.
Jesus christ, that was an epic bump.
That is all, continue with your regularly scheduled programming.

facebook really started only 3 years ago? Wow.
In my bio 101 class, nearly everyone has their facebook page open during lectures. It's quite funny. When I went to undergrad, laptops were not widespread and wifi was completely unheard of and when I taught, they still weren't used in the classroom for note-taking etc. I think it'd be really hard to teach to students who had their laptops open because I know they're not taking notes.
I remember when Facebook first came around. I was at school and it was about this time of year. I remember laughing at people who would talk about Facebook at parties... but now it's up almost 24/7 on my various devices. Oh well.
Yeah, I was entering my first year of college when Facebook came out. I got it when it came to my school, but I never thought it would get to the point that it is now.
I usually go on about once a day, even if just to see what friends have updated their stuff. Kinda stalker-y and creepy, but oh well, it's fun.
lol, interesting thread! So when did they drop the 'the'?
I remember there was something about it in the very beginning how someone else had the rights to Facebook.com and you had to use "the" in front.
Then it was big news on Facebook's homepage that you didn't have to type "the" anymore. I can't remember when that was though.

Then they let those damn high schoolers in...
Then they let businesses and employees in...
Now anyone can join without an invite! Crazy!
I use my Facebook to mack on all dem fine bitches :p ;)
Applications are the worst bit of the new Facebook though. It used to be so nice and clean and standardized. Now I look at some people's profiles and it's MySpace 2.0. Ugh.

I was OK with businesses, and I was OK with regions. I'm actually OK with them opening it up as much as they want, so long as I can control who has access to my information. The applications free-for-all, however, is awful. Most of them look like ass, and aren't done well. Like you said, MySpace 2.0.
Sweet, there's an AppleNova group (http://vt.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2204045449). That could be a fun little experiment. :)

Just saw this on another site but you guys might be interested. If you join the Ticketmaster Live group (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2426357824) on Facebook you get an iTunes Music Store link for 5 free songs (either the .99 or 1.29 persuasion) added to your account. The credit expires December 31st. Not a bad deal for clicking a link.

US only.
It's probably a "while supplies last" thing - has anybody tried this after PKI and seen a code? Perhaps they're simply out of codes.
EDIT: From the discussion on the ars technica posting about the topic (http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2007/10/12/ticketmaster-lonely-for-facebook-friends-offers-five-free-itunes-songs-if-you-join-its-group) it looks like everybody was just trying to screw them to get more than five songs - so perhaps that's also a reason for them to turn it off.
If they shut it down it must have been moments after I posted... sorry guys. Hopefully someone was able to take advantage.

It's fine for me, I just joined and successfully redeemed my code.
