Figure it's time for a new one. :p

I'm looking at switching hosting services here in the next couple of weeks, and I think I have it narrowed down to either HostGator (http://www.hostgator.com/) or 1and1 (http://www.1and1.com). From what I could gather by web reviews, HostGator seems to have the best uptime of the lot, but 1and1 seems to have the best feature set for the price. That said, price isn't a deal-breaker. As long as it's ~10bucks a month I can live with it.

So, anyone here use either of these services? Anyone have love stories they want to share about a different service? I'm just looking for a simple over-the-counter host here, really, no dedicated-server AjaxCSS4.0++ mumbo jumbo.

Thanks in advance for any help and/or insight. :)

Surpass. (http://surpasshosting.com) Since early 2005. No significant problems, and quick service responses on the rare occasion anything goes wrong.

Hmm. Definitely the best looking webpage I've seen for a hosting company, and there's something to be said for that. The online forum thing is pretty nifty too. I'll give it a closer look.

Any experience setting up FTPs with them?

I've never had any trouble with their FTP, and I've hosted sub-sites for several different friends a number of times, each with their own FTP directory/account.

Cool, thanks. I've been poking around the support forum a bit, and it seems like questions get answered pretty quickly. I have a week to figure out where I'm moving, but this Surpass place looks pretty decent so far. Thanks again. :)

Surpass is good if you're gonna host a site and minimal email addresses. I've pretty much left them for Server4You and a dedicated server. I still have an account on Surpass for my corporate account though.

Service tickets are handled pretty quickly, though if you use Mail.app and IMAP there are plenty of challenges there. I kept getting labeled a spammer because Mail check the server too many times and for multiple connects.

The other thing I've seen with shared hosting is mail getting rejected because a spammer once had the IP you now have. Overall, I have been satisfied with their web hosting abilities. FTP is pretty good, though horribly slow at times depending on who your server-mates are.
