I'm going to Boston in the near future, and I'm thinking of getting myself a 32 gb 3G iPad.

Apple.com says its $729, but what about local salestax?

Does anyone here know, what the price - including local salestax - is in Boston?

http://zip2tax.com/ is your friend for finding sales tax rates anywhere in the USA.You can google for ZIP codes. I found 02206 as a ZIP code for Boston, and zip2tax gives 6.25% as the rate.

Don't buy one in 35201! (Nowhere near Boston--don't worry.)

Though remember that zip code doesn’t necessarily correspond exactly to tax districts. For example, sales tax here in Texas can be levied by the state, county, city, school district and transportation district. I pay 7.125%, 5% going to the state, 1% to the county, 1/8% to the school district, but someone living in this county but not in this school district wouldn’t pay that last eighth.

It probably won’t change much, and I have no idea how Boston and Massachusetts levy sales tax, but it’s something to keep in mind.

I can confirm that it should be just sales tax at currently 6.25% and no extra charges.

Effective August 1, 2009, the Massachusetts sales tax is 6.25 percent of the sales price or rental charge of tangible personal property 1 or certain telecommunications services 2 sold or rented in the Commonwealth. (For a detailed definition of “sales price,” please see M.G.L. Ch. 64H sec. 1.) The sales tax generally is paid to the vendor as an addition to the purchase price. The buyer pays the sales tax to the vendor at the time of purchase; the vendor then remits the tax to the Commonwealth. For motor vehicle and trailer sales, however, the sales tax is paid directly to the Commonwealth by the purchaser. (Prior to August 1, 2009, the tax rate was 5 percent. See TIR 09-11, Change in Rate, Scope, and Computation of Sales/Use Taxes.)

For more detailed information on motor vehicle sales taxes, please call DOR’s Customer Service Bureau at 617-887-MDOR or toll-free in Massachusetts at 800-392-6089.

If you have transportation and don't mind a shortish drive (less than an hour) there is an Apple Store across the border in New Hampshire at Rockingham Park (Salem) http://www.apple.com/retail/rockinghampark/. Note this is Salem, New Hampshire and not Salem, Massachusetts.
