View Full Version : The "Explain Your Username" Thread

We haven't ever had one of these, have we? Most other forums I've been on have had one. It seems overdue.

Some of you have boring usernames ;) and others I can figure out. But some of them seem to have stories behind them...?

Mine is pretty straightforward. There is a game called Chrono Trigger. One of the characters is named Robo. This is he:

http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/kotaku/2009/05/chrono_tigger_robo.jpg
he's cuter as a sprite

I used "Robo" as a username on other sites (mostly gaming-related) at the time. But when I registered here, "Robo" was already taken by somebody who made two posts and left. So, yeah.

Robo is my favorite character in Chrono Trigger (duh) and if there's a robot character in a story I often like them. Not realistic ones (bo-ring!) but clunky punky fantasy ones. I've written three: one in an abandoned movie script, one in a concept album, and one in the sci-fi project I'm working on now. In a weird full-circle thing, the latter ended up having my name (not Roboman, my real one). In Soviet Russia, robots name themselves after you?

Your turn. :)

I like my boring user name. :p When I joined Applenova many moons ago I owned a PowerBook G3 (PB) and a Power Mac G4 , (PM).

I think we have had a thread about this in the past, but this is a better place anyway.

OK, chucker just won the thread. That's just awsum.

I don't think it's boring. I mean, now. Now it's like an homage to Macs gone by. :)

I think we have had a thread about this in the past, but this is a better place anyway.

It is pretty much a stock forum thread, so I wouldn't be surprised, but I searched (honest!) and didn't find anything, so.

I've got one of those "boring" ones, I guess...it's my first name initial (many here know it by now and refer to me that way, which feels familiar and friendly...so feel free to do so) and last name (not the roller kind, as it's spelled with a "c").

The "2.0" refers to my migration/new start here from the old place (AI forums).

Ta-da! Simple, but thrilling, I know...

About 10 years ago, I used Hotmail as my email provider. I got fed up of spam so I closed my account, but decided that I wanted something else for using MSN. Every name I wanted was taken, so several suggestions were given - adjectives in front of nouns. I saw turbulentfurball and thought it was hilarious. I've used it ever since.

billybobsky
2010-06-26, 09:20
My name is Bruce Robert .... (and no I am not Scottish). I was born/raised in Charleston, SC and went to college in Pennsylvania. I am not particularly southern in my mannerisms, speech, ideology or political affiliation and this was a source of some intrigue early on (and still to this day) in college. As a response to this attention I came up with the AIM handle brucebob which "southernized" my name. Years later, while playing serious sam on our lab LAN, i switched from my usual name of bruce to brucebob. There was a postdoc who found this hilarious but thought that I was more of a billybob than a brucebob. That name stuck for a short time, but I felt that it was missing something that made it mine so I added the sky (pronounced ski) to reflect the eastern european muttness of my familial lineage hence billybobsky....

Capella
2010-06-26, 11:09
Capella is the name of a star. I acquired it in my last year of middle school, which I guess would be 2000, as my Sailor Senshi identity for a fan-character Sailor Moon LARP I was running. That game ran for about two years and I got somewhat used to answering it, so when the game ended, I recycled it for a character for a heavily Harry Potter inspired RP which also lasted two to three years.

Around that time I stopped just reading the internet and started joining the internet in a participatory form- I am rather pleased that I am still a member of the first forum I ever joined, actually- and I was at a loss for a username, so since I was used to answering to Capella in real life, I registered with it.

Fun fact: I answer better to Capella than I do to my birth name. I hate my birth name, and I hate people using it. If I'm meeting a stranger I'm never going to interact with again, or if it's my parents, I use my birth name. With everyone else, it's Capella. In fact, when I eventually change my legal name, which I plan on doing when I have the money, Capella is going to be my middle name. So I plan on sticking with it for a good long time.

julesstoop
2010-06-26, 12:08
First name: Jules
Surname: Stoop (Pronounced like 'stow', with a 'p' added on the end, which is sort of a common name in the Netherlands and Belgium. A 'stoop' is vessel for holding 2,5 liters of beer or wine, but nobody uses the word any more nowadays. The beer and wine still flow richly though :) )

I just use my real name about anywhere on the internet. Years back, when I was younger and more idealistic, it was a conscious choice and part of resolving sort of an identity crises. A friend of mine had committed suicide and part of the personal circumstances leading do his tragedy, was him leading several parallel lives which in the end led to him loosing touch with himself. So I decided to always be myself and part of that was to always use my 'real' name.

Nowadays I realise I'm not him, but I stuck to the habit. :)

Maciej
2010-06-26, 12:18
My first name.

Pronounciation: Ma-ch(like checkers)-yay

At least that's how I would write the pronunciation off hand, probably a better way to do it if I looked things up. Better yet, why don't you look it up!

torifile
2010-06-26, 13:19
Tori Amos was one of my favorite musicians (no, I'm neither gay nor a woman. I used to fancy myself a feminist. But mostly it was her outspoken views on religion of your family of origin that meant/means something to me.)

Anyway, back in the days of free 1 month trials of AOL and various other dial-up ISPs , I used toriphile first then, because toriphile was taken, torifile. I liked the way the misspelling looked and so it stuck.

Funny timing of this thread. I recently just started really listening to tori's music again and found a live recording of her performing at Bonaroo (STFU, scates!). Serendipity or roboman controlling the universe? :err:

Bonaroo is just up the road from me. The freeways around there get really nutty up in the area, and get routed off to the shoulder for miles and miles (because it's out in the middle of nowhere, right off I-24). It's like a mini-Woodstock every summer.

Dave
2010-06-26, 13:37
When I went to college, I had to pick a username for logging in and emails and such. I had never even thought about it, so after a couple of seconds of drawing a black, I said "how about 'dave'?" to get some more time to think of a good name. The person on the other side of the counter kinda chuckled and typed it in. Apparently, in the school's near forty-year history, nobody named Dave had thought to try just their name. Ever since then, I've always tried it whenever I'm registering on a forum like this. It's usually taken though, in which case I go for TheOtherDave. There is one place where I'm TheOtherOtherDave, but it usually works.

Bryson
2010-06-26, 13:44
I used to have a cat, who I named Bryson after Bill Bryson. (His brother was Mikesh, after George Mikes. It was a comedy-travel-writer theme, I guess.)
Anyway, Bryson had a habit of climbing across the keyboard when I was using the net, looking for attention. So much so, I used to joke that he typed more than me. Hence, when the time came to select a username, I chose "Bryson".
Sometimes I add ...430 if I can't get Bryson, which was the first lighting console I bought for work. Now that's dorky.

The weird thing is that I've been using Bryson for so long, that I quite often meet people in the real world who know me via the net (especially via the other site I frequent for Theatre Techs) and they call me Bryson to my face, which I still can't quite get used to.

Capella is also the name of an online university I see ads for all the time. :D

My parents and my dad's dad are and always were the only people who call me by my birth name, too, and of course they always will. It weirded me out, hearing strangers use it, until I finally (legally) changed it. But I was one of those weird people whose "real" name was always different than their birth/legal name. I briefly thought about changing my name to something actually different but I thought that would be hard to get used to.

If any of you have the misfortune ;) of being John, I highly recommend being Jack instead. It's a simple but dramatic improvement, like dropping the "-ley" from Bradley. :p The Importance of Being Ernest apparently had it in reverse, as I have had several attractive women tell me that they had always wanted a boyfriend named Jack. Alas, they were fated to continue wanting a boyfriend name Jack. But clearly, the name is in short supply. (Won't someone think of the attractive women?)

Kickaha
2010-06-26, 14:25
Philip Jose Farmer's The World of Tiers series has a character named Kickaha in it. Originally an Irish-American, kidnapped to another world where he uses his wit, charm, and mad lovin' skills to build up several lives and mini-kingdoms. He goes by many names, but his favorite is Kickaha, the Trickster, given to him by the descendants of an American Indian tribe kidnapped centuries ago.

For some reason, I liked it when I was 15 and selected my first BBS handle. Twenty-five years later, I'm still using it online.

My suggestion? Roll with it. "Bryson" is hot in the way last-names-as-first-names usually are (hi Anderson Cooper!). Plus, you could be Bri for short. Like Briareos!

Um... well it's a two sided pun...thing. "Xaq" is pronounced the same way as my name, which is Zak, and "Xaqtly" is pronounced like "exactly" without the "e" in the front.

I came up with this one a long time ago as I was looking for a unique name to slap on the music I was writing at the time. Shockingly, the domain was also available so I grabbed it. And it's been my online handle most places ever since.

GSpotter
2010-06-26, 14:51
I was a long time lurker over at AI. At some point in time, there was a rumour from a german site, and somebody asked for translation help. So I registered (it was my first forum registration). My first tries of usernames were already taken, so I had to improvise. My train of thought was something like this:

I was on AI to spot news on the then rumoured G3s, so I thought about G3Spotter. I didn't want to tie my username to a specific computer generation, so I dropped the '3'. I liked the result as it looked like a real name (Gerald Spotter or something like that) which had nothing to do with my real name and had a little twist to it (G-spot ;) ). When I moved from AI to AO, I used the same user name for easy recognition. I tend to use different user names on different boards, normally with a relationship to the forums context.

BTW: My real first name is Volker.

When I started college my roommate had a very simple AIM handle, it was his initials and our school, FSU. I adopted that moniker but exchanged his initials for my own for obvious reasons. I used it for a number of years and still use the .Mac email alias for all my signups online. Because I used it for so long, a simple search brings up a little more connectivity then I particularly care for, but I'm not creative enough to come up with something to change it to.

I was bauman over at AI, but as that's my last name I decided to pick something new when I finally migrated over here.

Majost is simply the first two letters of each of my first three names. I have two middle names, and I don't believe any government form has ever gotten it correct since my birth certificate. It's a pain in the ass, but I appreciate having my mom's maiden name as a part of my name without creating a hyphenated last name (that can also be a pain). And I like my name. Matthew Joel is a great combination. I go by Matt for anyone who has met me since middle school, though.

My user title, "monkey with a tiny cymbal" comes from the Hot Chip song Over and Over, which I listened to religiously for about a month. The line is actually "monkey with a miniature cymbal," but that wouldn't fit. It worked particularly well since I used to work with monkeys for a living. (Literally.) :)

I just haven't had a reason to change it since.

That's an interesting way of coming up with a name! I would be Jagr, which reminds me of Jaguar. Also, Mick Jagger, but that's probably just because he was trending on Twitter today. (No middle names here, which can also cause problems. :p)

2010-06-27, 01:37
So my name came from an '89 Plymouth Sundance that ran on 2 1/2 cylinders. (Compression was gone in one and 1/2 in the second.) So since my car had no power and wouldn't go very fast I was dubbed Turtle. I was heavy into CB usage back then because I lived in the back woods of Suffolk. So if you were running around Suffolk on a CB you'd find me by calling for Turtle.

AOL got popular and my cousin gave me a screen name. "turtle" was taken and AOL offered to add "2472". I didn't care and so I ended up going with "turtle2472". Since then I've pretty much grabbed it on all services out there because "Turtle" is just about always taken. Even here it's not being used though it's taken. Since I have the name everywhere I've pretty much just chosen to keep it no since I also have to TLD for it too.

I've been online sooooo long... (300 baud acoustic modems, dude)... I've always been an anonymity/privacy nut devotee.

I've never wanted my digital life to connect to my private life.

I've gone by both First and Second names at different times/countries/media careers, and I answer to either depending on where I'm hanging. But I dig quiet more than ego.
Combined with my Surname, there are a few waaaay more famous Canadians who provide ample web cover.. . and I see no upside in Heisenberg violation, so Pseudonyms FTW.

I'm fine with 'Burb for short, but have discovered that a unique username provides both anonymity and google-fu to rediscover any prior posts quickly.

I slowly awoke one afternoon in late December a few years ago, in a puddle of vomit, head pounding like nothing I'd ever felt before. Another night of binge drinking, drugs, and women. I knew it had to stop.

Mindlessly channel surfing, wearing nothing but urine soaked boxers and a five o'clock shadow, I stumbled across something amazing. The story of Mary and Joseph. I felt as though I could turn my life around. I almost watched the entire thing before passing out again.

12 hours later I'm dragging my feet through a dark alley looking for my guy. He's usually by the dumpster. While attempting to place my order, I had a flashback to that show. To the 3 wisemen. I quickly changed gears.

"Make that a fifth of mihr."

"Mihr?"

"Yeah, problem with that?"

"No, uh, here you go."

I went home with my little bag of mihr and hammered it down. Unfortunately it wasn't mihr. It was crystal meth. The strong stuff. I didn't realize this for some time though.

I didn't sleep for 9 days. I was a machine. I did things you can't imagine. I was like a robot, man. A robot on mihr. A mihrbot.

Unfortunately I can't spell when I'm high, and I'm too lazy to change it back.

OK in have arrived a little late to this thread but i am now here! Although saying that my username isn't that interesting.

Nikstar101: Basically when i was young there was another Nick i knew therefore i decided to spell my name Nik rather than Nick, to differentiate myself. And the number 101 seems a little different and crazy  (at the time!!).

Therefore when i came ot get my first email address i used Nik and 101 but that was taken and i think Yahoo suggested adding the star part. Therefore i have continued to use it for the past 12 years or so. As i am not fond using my surname on the net.

To be honest i really want to think of a new ID but to be honest I can never think of a good one..... I liked Talking Coyote (as in that one form the Simpsons episode where Homer eats the insanely hot chilly) but that might sound crap in a few years too...

My old one was a reference to (at the time I signed up) my college, which is now my employer. I figured some of the shit I say here doesn't reflect wonderfully on them, so I asked Brad to change it. :p

I never really make a secret of my identity online, though. If I'm doing something that I don't want publicly known, I don't talk about it online.

My old one was a reference to (at the time I signed up) my college, which is now my employer. I figured some of the shit I say here doesn't reflect wonderfully on them, so I asked Brad to change it. :p"

It took me a few seconds to remember your old name. :)

I never really make a secret of my identity online, though. If I'm doing something that I don't want publicly known, I don't talk about it online.

That's probably smart.

I talk about stuff online all the time that I couldn't really talk about offline. In a lot of ways Robo is more my "real" identity; make of that what you will ("Wow, Robo's a nerd!"). I cover my tracks (and yes, I do cover my tracks!) mainly because I don't want to get other people in trouble, or don't want to be associated with people who are in trouble, which is why there's some things I notably avoid talking about.

Still, a really dedicated person/stalker could probably connect me to my "family," which is like the only thing I don't want people to be able to do. (I mean, seriously, you guys think I would hide anything else? I'm like freaking Oprah. :o) Luckily, I'm nobody famous or important or rich. Security through obscurity! :D

In a fit of unrelenting creativity, I came up with... my last name.

Aw, man...I thought it might've been a cool Earp reference/tie-in! :)

Nope, but I do have a funny story related to that.

My dad teaches at a jr. high. He told me once that on his first day there, he of course introduced himself to his students as Mr. Wyatt. In his first period class, almost immediately, a hand shot up. Before my dad even called on him, the student blurted out, "Are you related to Wyatt Earp?"

Yes, my dad had to explain to an 8th grader how last names work.

First initial, last name.

I've wanted to change it since about month four here. The only thing worth telling about it is this: I used a different handle than my usual internet handle because I thought, "Jeez, these guys are Mac geniuses. If I give them my most common user name, they'll be able to hack my computer in no time." No kidding. Oh, what a dumb little novice I was (and continue to be).

Ohmigosh... :D

I can see that, yeah.

"So are you, like, a cowboy or something? Are Kevin Costner and Kurt Russell your brothers?"

If being a Mr. Wyatt ever gets you down, you at least have this: You're not a Mr. Earp. :|

Coincidentally, "earp" sounds a lot like the sound I made thinking about that! :wtf:

So at least you have the awesome half of the name. ;) Plus, Wyatt is better as a last name, unlike Bryson and Anderson above. Partially because, if anyone had the first name of "Wyatt," they'd hear nothing but Wyatt Earp references (even more than you probably do now! :D).

It's a cool last name though.

It's a great last name. It's a shame my first name (Ben) is so common. If I ever moved to a place where I knew nobody, I'd probably switch to primarily using my last name instead of my first. (You know, like I did here.)

Rule of good character naming: Unusual first name (Sherlock Holmes) or unusual last name (Ben Wyatt), not both (Hannibal Lecter) or neither (Bob Jones).

Feel free to use my name for a character. As long as it's not for a crazy person. :p

What I was trying to say is, a "common" first name isn't at all a bad thing if you have an unusual last name. "James Shrugg" works. "Hermes Shrugg" would be weird. "Atlas Shrugg" would be unfortunate. ;)

I said "character" because I'm not ever going to be in a position to name a real person, but it goes for people too. :)

It's what Sheryl Crow named her first adopted son (or he might've already come pre-named, I'm not sure). In any case, Ms. Crow has a little boy named Wyatt. Which is kinda cool. Now, if the little wall-scrawler would just introduce me to her...

Still doesn't beat Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow's daughter, Apple.

Which is sweet, and cute, and why poets should never have children.

That's an interesting way of coming up with a name! I would be Jagr...

Oooh, I like that.

Is your location a reference to a certain television programme (happy birthday, J. J. Abrams!), a Coldplay song, or a simple state of being?

It was originally from Lost... and then I found it quite appropriate for my state of being... and then I was too lazy to change it. :)

My last name's Bolte (commonly mispronounced as "Bolt"), so I just went with the first reasonable name that played on that in any sense.

If I were more creative, I'd have gone with some Tesla-inspired handle or something similar, but then I wouldn't have such a cute firefly as my avatar. :)

originally i was CoachKrzyzewski - in high school I was a huge duke basketball fan and thought it would be funny/cool/whatever to use that name. four years later I'm not going to duke for my college education (still a big fan, but my own team comes first), so decided to change my name here when I saw that some others had changed theirs. now it's simply my first name.

Years ago when I picked my name, I was a huge fan of Pinky and The Brain. I'll let this transcript speak the rest:

Pinky and The Brain are trying to take over the world by releasing a leather repellant at a key moment from the pitcher's mound of a baseball game.
Not wanting him to get in the way, Brain made Pinky the bench warmer and told him to collect splinters.

Brain: What are those?

Pinky: I've been collecting splinters just like you asked me, brain.

Pinky: Look. I made this out of them. (presents a mouse-sized baseball bat) I call it thunderpoit.

Brain: I'm glad the occupational therapy is working, Pinky.

I guess I never thought I might be using it this long...

Sauvignon Blanc

One of my fave white wines. I think I was probably drinking it at the time I signed up. I suck at coming up with clever user names. Oh well...

Personality followed by heritage. In other forums or means of communication, I typically add my favorite number, 89, to the end of it.

Thanks to Brad I'm just turtle now. :) PM was sent and my request was filled. It's actually kinda cool being a name without a number. As 709 pointed out in another thread that most people with number in their name are normally not worth talking with... maybe I'll find the post to link here.

Anyway, so most of you who wonder where I went, I just have a new name. :)
