As per the request of the esteemed 709, this here is your Minecraft 1.9 thread named after the NPCs occupying our sovereign land. Kill them all!

Anyway, feel free to post your 1.9 adventures, questions, comments, concerns, debacles, and drunken sorties here.

:D

For the onlookers:

http://i54.tinypic.com/141qiva.jpg

NPC villagers are unibrow Bergeracs apparently. Broken up into professions indicated by colored aprons and robes. There are priests. Bobsky will likely kill them first. If he doesn't I will. ;)

Tons of new Nether blocks. A couple of new Nether mobs: A lava slime and a stupid sparky thing. Pigmen now drop gold nuggets, ghasts drop tears - which I guess you can use to tame and ride a ghast - though I'm not sure why anyone would do that.

Lots of other stuff, but I'm most excited about the Nether buildings/strongholds. This could be fun. :)

Oh god that's great.

Looks like we'll be kissing goodbye to Sedona and SOB very very soon. :D Maybe we should try out a new 1.9-pre world this weekend?

709
2011-09-22, 16:19
Hellz yes. If I could make one small request: post the world seed in the 1.8 thread before you lock it? It's a nice world (though not ideal for the AN New World) and I'm sure some of us may like to go back to it. :)

Brad

Wait what? Don't you want backup? Given, with a new world we have to smash creepers in the face with lumber, but still. Scary shit.

Brad
2011-09-22, 17:40
Also, geez, I was just about ready to post an updated texture pack and now I have to go add support for more items and blocks. What is this madness??

Protip: This is the kind of problem we want to have.

drewprops
2011-09-22, 17:40
how do we all play in the same place?

also, I finally found a village in creative mode and noticed that the people did NOT attack me when I hit them... they also showed no signs of knowing how to repair damage and they walked out in the night around all the baddie mobs with no damage incurred. A creeper blew up near one (because of me) and it did nothing. I buried one guy about 4 blocks down in a hole then gave him a ladder but he didn't know how to use it at ALL.

...

709
2011-09-22, 18:11
That could've been a CM mode thing, with them not taking damage and all. But a city of the buried undead? Totally going to do that.

So, for those who weren't on last night: We've taken up residence at a nice little lake with plains, deserts and different types of forest nearby. We're about 1500 blocks south of spawn, so it's a fair trek. I'll post full co-ords next time I logon.

And yes, there was an incident in a town. Let's not talk about it.

709
2011-09-23, 16:13
Ah. I thought y'all were holed up in the swamp safe-house that I found. Hmm. I'll be on later tonight after I make golumpkis, maybe I'll be able to make the trek out there without too many deds. ;)

Obliquely referencing human genocide, all well and good, directly referencing a specific one is truly fucked up.

There's Jimmy Carr "routine" about the nature of comedy and offense that touches on this idea: that even if it's maximally offensive (ie: about the worst thing that ever happened) if it's not hate-driven, it can still also be very funny.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SagayzX2T7Y

Obviously, be prepared to be offended.

I've take up across from Rowdy's place, up on the higher promontory facing out into the water. I plan to build in glass but am lighting the shit out of the place, above and below. I think I'm building on top of a coal mine for goodness sake.

I think we'll need a community shack out in the desert for sand miners if there hasn't been one built already.

Edit up front: Brad I had to drag that image into Photoshop and lighten it in order to see what you were talking about... crenelations and fortress walls and piers and walkways.... wow.

Bruce I have some of the stuff you dropped when you died in the Nether. Apparently one of the pigmen was still pissed off and he came at me, forcing me to lay waste to his ass in my typically brave manner... at which point it was pile-on-drew time for everyone in pigman manor.... kicked all their asses without dying somehow... made it back out then got to trying to talk to everyone and 2 creepers came in and blew up in the cavern containing the portal... I patched at it then ran home.

Bravely.

Did someone mine out all the netherwart from the nether ruins? It's all gone, at least around the stairs I visited. Please replant if you did. The stuff only grows in the nether on the soul sand.

Brad

Also, I found a blaze spawner in the ruins! Images brightened for visibility.

Once you find this lava pool:

Wander into the netherrack catacombs and eventually you'll find this:
http://i.imgur.com/s0Quq.jpg

I had to kill two blazes to get this shot. Beware! Lighting up the spawner with torches doesn't appear to keep blazes from spawning. You have to destroy the spawner. I left this one intact, though, since it's out of the way and the only one I've seen so far.

Notch says there's two more features he wants to add before a feature freeze on the 18th, giving them a month to polish before launch.

I guess it depends on if they release a "final beta" with those last two features on the 18th, and then polish that for a month, or if they don't bother releasing that final beta. If they release a beta release after the feature freeze, I don't think polishing would get in the way of starting a new "permanent" world...?

I saw a post on the minecraft forums recently that someone was developing a tool to smooth the transition from 1.7 to 1.8+ chunks. basically it inserts a river at the join, then smooths the terrain down to the riverbed. Not sure how it deals with caverns. Thought it seemed interesting: maybe we could go back to Bridgeport?

(That said, I've been really enjoying the "start again" nature of the last few weeks.)

I've seen some of the edge-smoothing tools too (haven't seen the river one though). Pretty neat.

I wouldn't mind starting over (museum complex notwithstanding). I do hope we can get a cross-world portal going for at least a limited time though.

Or stick with BridgePort. Either way. There's a lot invested there, that's for sure.

What's the difference with that now? Is that saying you have :27 more seconds of being poisoned? I haven't noticed that on any of these yet. I see your food bar is green, but not making the connection. I haven't been poisoned yet.

That's what it appears to mean - the food bar will keep draining faster for the duration of the 'poisoned' effect, which is what the timer is for.

Yes, but note: Poison ≠ Hunger.

Hunger makes the food bar glow green and be consumed faster.
Poison makes your health bar glow green and slowly deplete.

So we have made some changes for everyone at our house.

There is now a chest near the chicken coop for anyone to be able to grab something when needed. I'm not using admin powers to make stuff right now like I did (and likely will do again) with the armory and tool shed. So these things are things Mrs T and me have worked for. However we love sharing with you people so enjoy it.

Also, the pen for the cows, sheep and pigs really is for everyone. Please don't let them all out or take all of them. We use our wheat to mate them and such. If you need a couple to get your own ranch going, stop by and pick up a few. :) The ranch area was started with community effort so we certainly can't claim all of it. If you need something else, just ask because most likely we will give you want you ask. :)

Beta 1.9 pre 3 was released today, but I'm too tired tonight to bother with fixing up the texture pack and updating the server. The weekend approacheth, though!

Although the terrain generator doesn't appear to have changed, there are some important blocks that our map will lack if we choose to not wipe and start over (or delete chunks). Strongholds, for example, now contain new block types that won't exist in already-generated areas.

turtle
2011-10-06, 21:57
I'm cool with holding out on rebuilding everything until the 1.9 final or even 1.10.

Brad
2011-10-06, 22:13
Or even 1.0. ;)

Remember, Mojang reset the version counter when they switched from alpha to beta, and I expect they'll reset the version counter to 1.0 proper once out of beta. After all, we're currently at version beta 1.9, not 1.9.

That said, me too. We have just a few more weeks (so they say) before they feature freeze and just a few more weeks later before the we're out of beta.

[!] When you shut down a server, it always loses data. save-all does nothing. Additionally some chunks will not save the changes. When you leave and then return the area will be back to it's original state. (?)

Maybe we ought to hold off on this update for the moment. Full (known) bug list here (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Known_bugs/Version_1.9pre3).

Brad
2011-10-08, 09:41
That bug is not widely confirmed. On the discussion page, a few guys are claiming it's a bug, and a few guys are claiming it's not. I checked the official MC forums, and some people are experiencing it there too.

I'll definitely be testing this one myself before updating the AN server, and as usual I'll save a backup immediately before upgrading in case we need to roll back.

Brad
2011-10-08, 10:16
Also, I'm reminded of why I never check the MC forums more than just superficially. The place is filled with moronic comments and "advice" like this, probably my favorite example, in response to criticism of SMP bugs:

Get a better server...The Netcode is fine for servers with 3-5 bars on the lag indicator thingy. Or just get better internet.

It's not at all finished. There's a wheat farm planned to keep the animals in check, a ducken farm in the water area and maybe a small windmill.

I'm all for sticking with this world. I'm getting a little burned out on projects evaporating due to notch's bullshit programming, but, that said, I know this world is another temp home, so whatever's best for everyone is OK by me.

Is there a reasonable chunk deleter for Pre1.9x? I'm guessing no since Mojang holds the source so closely until release.

Brad
2011-10-13, 20:18
All the chunk deletion was done by yours truly. :) I wrote the program that did the "aggressive" pruning that I proposed (but then abandoned), and I could easily adapt it to work with beta 1.9 pre X without Mojang's blessing or source. ;)

I'd rather we have the world naturally generating these things and giving us the opportunity to find them instead of me (or turtle) just magically doling them out. I don't actually know, for example, if deleting chunks with strongholds will actually regenerate them with the new blocks.

I don't think the creepers got boosted in pre-2... so, just image how worse screwed you'd be with pre-4. ;)

Also, yes swords are weaker now (http://twitter.com/#!/jeb_/status/125968035189239808).

Okay, I'll make restitution with Bruce when he's back in-game or when the Toshban wears off. Look in the water outside your place for a hole... ride it down into the corridor I made and you'll have easy access to those deep caverns for more mining :)

I don't think Bruce will care about green cobble, he's all about the precious metals. If it's just off of my place then it's part of of the Drew/Grey Mining Co. (though, again, I would've taken any green cobble). There are still large unexplored mineshafts/mine hallways in our vicinity. But if it's far enough out in the water to see the farm on your direct right it's all bobsky.

Okay, I'll make restitution with Bruce when he's back in-game or when the Toshban wears off.I read that as "Taliban" - but hilariously it's not too far off. I plan to stick with my ignore list from now on and not respond to terrorists that threaten common sense (and good taste).

Dead. Drowned. I gave up after Grey got blown up by the creeper. I tried to save his stuff but the second creeper took out some of it. I got lucky and threw a fence post in his way, else he'd have had me dead to rights. I was loaded down with lots of gold and redwire and lapis and iron and so I started to dig up, up, up. I finally kept hitting sand and then water. I had an air pocket, and I tried to fill my lungs for the swim to the surface but as I drew near my little body ran out of air and I died.... all that gold sinking back to the ocean floor.

And whoever built the amazing ocean glass thing : kudos!!!

New version of OptiFine was released with support for beta 1.9 pre-5.

I stuck a copy on my dropbox so you don't have to mess with opening and modifying the MC jar. Just download, unzip, and replace!

Twice as many bits!!

There are probably some performance gains, but I haven't benchmarked it. There are also some 32-bit JVM bugs that cause Minecraft to crash on Windows, but I don't think they affect the JVM on Mac OS X.

Consider this an experimental build. :) If it works well, keep it. Else, toss it and go back to the standard launcher.

About that... so, we were recently talking in-game about the Old World (which further prompted me to get it ready and post it for download) and I said that I would certainly entertain having each member pick one of his/her buildings or structures (within reason) to be transported into the New World, assuming we get bukkit running again one day.

I could see the Rink qualifying, if that'd be your choice!

Could we make it a throw back area of the map, ie: little to no further development with everything next to each other? (fixing things is allowed) It could even be a cityscape planned by you, Brad, if you want.

I would have moved the modern house I built. It would take some doing, but I think I could get it fixed up. The hill is the bitch part of that, though I could certainly landscape around it to fit it anywhere.

Also: I think 709 will want his museum.... but can I suggest that we also pick (in addition to the one/person) say 3 community selected structures... I would nominate 709's hotel, the space shuttle (since I suspect Brad's transport would be the moneybin or the airport), and k's lodge.

Other structures we will likely be building replacements of: the AN sign, the hostile mob trap (designed to preclude owen's from spawning)...

Indeed, I would pick the museum above all else because a) it's unfinished in its current state and b) once it's finished and I have the major exhibits built I wanted to bring the community in to decide on and build their own. It was always kind've meant as a community thing, which is why I was so bummed when we had to move worlds. Star Wars exhibit? check. History of Antarctica? sure. Potions galore in the search for the cure? Of course. I think it would be wildly fun.

Buried, and under the ocean!

Also, if Notch adds a way of returning from The End, we could set up an Owen trap there. Either they aren't interested in picking up end stone blocks or they just don't pick up anything in The End. Hard to tell.

If under the ocean, I'm thinking we could make a path to it from my tunnel. Also, my tunnel is apparently heading right for someone's structure, with all the caves under there having been previously explored. I'm gonna slant out a bit and go more towards open ocean, I guess.

Ah, but this would all be in the new 1.0 map. The plan is still to torch the current world when 1.0 drops. A new version of bukkit should surface shortly after the 1.0 release, and then I'll be able to experiment with multiworld plugins for transporting structures back and forth.

Yup! IOW, Loch Greene may soon become a thing of the past...

We should figure out what everyone is hoping for in the new world. I'm hoping to have our main city be oceanfront property with pine forests nearby...not unlike what we currently have. I'm also hoping for tons of area to explore nearby, so that we don't end up with a tangled mess for caverns underneath.

709
2011-11-08, 14:00
So savannas exist apparently. I was wandering around the BP map and realized that it stopped raining around FM, even though there was grass (I always assumed the rain stopped at desert blocks but rained everywhere else). That could be nice for a new city.

drewprops
2011-11-09, 14:35
I want a very similar setup to what we have now, but it would be nice to have giant towering mountains in the vicinity. Loch Green is keen, and would be keener if we also had an area of gridded development reminiscent of Bridgeport.

We started to have something like that in our desert habitat, but not quite. I think you'd be surprised at how a defined set of pathways provide a compelling framework for construction. When you design for access to standard paths of travel you add a layer of ordering. It's just a thought, mind you.

I was on for a short time last night, but honestly I've been having a lot of fun wandering around BP. Things have definitely changed with the transition to the newest version of MC. The passive trap seems to be in a non-animal-producing plain now (possibly part of the FM savanna).

I've been keyboard-mashing a little bit too looking for a world where spawn is close to an area like Loch Greene plus having mountains, deserts, plains and forests nearby (a close snow biome would also be a bonus). Not really any luck yet.
