View Full Version : Photo Challenge Thread (PCT): Still Life

AWR

The theme for this month is STILL LIFE.

You can be as clever or traditional as you wish within this venerable genre. Sophisticated setup or drunken phone shot, no problem - just bring it!

The rules are as usual. Entries welcome and encouraged from any and all 'Novians, regardless of whether you have participated in the challenge previously. All entries must be taken during the period of the challenge itself. No heavy editing or photoshopping. Entries will be accepted until the end of the day (11.59 PM - North American Pacific Time), Monday, October 31, 2011.

Best of luck.

I think this thread needs a good bump, I almost forgot about it.

Thanks PB PM. I was hoping to do so while recognizing it might not be the best time. Your timing is good.

The inspiration for this PCT comes from this shot from the Color Photography thread. Amazing that a setting so simple could be so engaging. I imagined the other photo studs and Brad could give it a run for its money. ;)

So poke around and snap away!

This is the start of what I'm going to work with. I love this character in the movie so I want to make something happen with it. iPhone 4S in a filtered sunlight foyer.

I deny being a photo stud, though I can tolerate stud. I too hope Brad will throw in something.

My entry is a straightforward shot of travel paraphernalia:

Yup, that's my new car key! (It's new to me, at least.)

Whoa this thread exploded! Great pics guys.

I snapped this at the start of my sunday brunch :) If you're ever in Charlottesville, VA, go here (http://www.beerrun.cc/) - not only do they have an overwhelming beer selection and fantastic other drinks (like the one pictured), but they have an awesome, varied menu that's sourced almost exclusively from local organic farmers. Fish Tacos, burgers, BBQ Pork Lasagna, seafood pastas... always something new and delicious to try.

PS - 4S picture!

Still lives never have enough action. I guess that's a result of their inanimate object nature, but it strikes me that that doesn't have to be the case, particularly in a world with cartoons and animated anthropomorphized animals. Here I give you a still life -- the objects in the photo are quite inanimate and still, focus was 'chosen' to indicate action of the suspended koala. Vegetation was added to harken back to the original still lives of olde and adds something of a cooking theme to the photo which wasn't completely intentional. The photo is titled Tag Team.

Edit: None of the stuffed animals were harmed in the making of this photo particularly because they are not mine, and I didn't want to piss off my host.

Just took mine. Will not be able to post it until tomorrow though.

Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

Tons of iso noise and way off into the warm territory (my man cave is quite dark) with my last-minute-gotta-put-something-in-because-DG-and-AWR-called-me-out-wait-what-no-are-you-serious entry. I will admit to throwing it to Photoshop to bring some sanity back to the white balance.

Not staged. I actually worked through assembling my Halloween costume with all my supplies on this little folding table.

I really should dump out that filthy paint water. http://forums.applenova.com/images/smilies/custom/barf.gif
Nah. Maybe tomorrow.

Forbidden fruit.

I was inspired to have some fun with the occasion of the end date of this month's challenge. Thanks to my daughter Charlotte for helping out. Spooky stuff.

Ketchup?

   (more 'evil' LOL - preferably with an echo effect and weird organ music)

No fruit was harmed in the production of the photograph.

Do we have a winner?

AWR
2011-11-08, 09:01
OK, this decision is very difficult; a credit to all entries, several of which I would be comfortable crowning, with a couple of others pretty close too. Thanks for the participation!

In no particular order and without being comprehensive...

evan, I'd drink that, after the lime and lemon go in. Thanks for the 4S shot.
furb, I'm glad I was never hallucinating when I looked at that drink! Is that from Scotland? Thanks!
billybobsky, your composition and lighting are second to none here; had that parsley been in focus, you would have been vying for the podium.
DG, you stud: what's up with this lame shot? Reminds me of some Microsoft journal template. Just kidding, completely. The subject and composition appeal to me - all that's needed to escape (and stay in touch!), without a fixed itinerary maybe, is there. (Sorry to see you didn't end up in one of those early 80s Mercedes, although the Citroen will be cheaper to get repaired!) Honorable mention.
Brad, very strong. Keep playing, please.
turtle, nice work, appreciate the effort, crowded field!
Chinney, beautiful colors, table shadow, love the lime, fun composition, lost just a couple of points for not using fresh blood. How did that background get so black? Wish there could be more than one winnar.... Honorable mention.

(Yes, two honorable mentions necessary. :) )

And the winner of this PCT is GSpotter!! A really lovely, subtle shot that I enjoyed more each time I visited the thread. While it lacks a more classical setting, it is full of life. Nice framing, bokeh, colors and textures. Clicking through to the original file brings out its winning qualities. Congrats!

Again, everyone, thanks for chipping in and keeping the PCT story alive!

UPDATE!

Filthy paint water is still on my desk. MAYBE I'LL CLEAN UP TONIGHT! Yeah, that's the ticket.

It's probably turned into an acceptable quality blue wine by now. Give it a taste, Brad.

Woah, that came unexpected! I posted that shot more as a stop-gag until I find a more appropriate subject (which I didn't at the end). I really expected DG to be the winner ...

Thanks!

I thought Chinney's was a shoe-in. Shows what I know.

(No offense to any other participants, of course.)

I liked Evan's picture a lot, with the light and angle. Brad had a similar angle but the light wasn't as pretty (compact fluorescent lamp?).

AWR might have been joking about mine looking like a Microsoft journal template, but he wasn't and it does! A bit more spit and polish, and it could alternatively end up on the box of some ghastly travel software.

Your leaf is great, GSpotter. Clean and simple, like many of your shots. We should all learn to be so selective! AWR is right that the full-size version is even better.

Congratulations to GSpotter. I especially liked the contrast between the crisp foreground and the soft background in the winning photo.

I appreciate the honourable mention AWR. And thanks for the enjoyable theme this month. :) As for the black background in my own shot, all was low tech. We turned off all the lights downstairs. The only light left was a flashlight on the table pointed directly at the fruit bowl and I exposed so even that barely provided enough light for the bowl; all else was black. My daughter and I had a lot of fun at it; I do like how it turned out, especially the colours.
