Just like the title says, I need an external drive that can boot OS X. Would the typical HD Passport or Seagate GoFlex be sufficient (USB 2.0) or would I need to find a FireWire drive?

How urgently do you need it? HD prices are still a bit elevated following the Thailand floodings. If you can wait until April, do.

Any USB2 drive can be used a boot device.

(Almost?) all Intel Macs can boot from USB 2.0. PowerPC Macs, by and large, cannot.

Thanks all. I went with a WD Passport drive. It works great and is surprisingly quick when it comes to running an OS over USB. It's just what I needed.
