App Store and Subscriptions?

Does anyone here know Apple's policy on apps that are subscription-based? That is, the app is free but the service it facilities (not content) has a monthly fee.

Essentially, the service is outside the app and the app just serves as an additional view into the service. Do I have to use in-app payments for this or can I handle payments myself using Stripe?

My understanding is that the In-App Subscriptions are intended for content subscriptions, not SaaS. Also, I'd rather give Stripe 2.9% than Apple 30% if I can help it. Doubly because the app isn't the core of the service, just one window into it while most of the service lives on my own servers elsewhere.
